  1. The combat is really fun. It’s like a mix between the early Assassins’ Creed games, the Arkham games and a tiny bit of Dark Souls parrying. There’s plenty of freedom to either stealth your way in to camps, snipe with arrows, or just walk in the front door and call them out for a stand-off. The stand-off mechanic is cool, and the one-on-one duels that pop up every now and then are awesome.

Also the environment is quite often stunning, the swaying flowers as you ride through on your horse are beautiful. I say get it, it’s great.

  2. I was signed up for alerts so got an email, when I clicked through I could add to basket, but I've already got one so just thought I'd post it here.  The bundle I saw was nearly £800 though so probably not the worst one to miss.

I’ve finally just got the call from Currys so my PS5 is on the way. Thanks again @Gigawatt

Great news, hopefully it gets there soon.

I'm also reticent to spend £70 on any game, in fact the only true PS5 games I've played so far are Miles and Demon's (plus a couple of the PS Plus freebies).  But I've had so much enjoyment from playing Ghost of Tsushima, Cyberpunk and God of War in lovely smooth 60fps, and I'm just about to start another playthrough of TLoU2 now that patch has hit, that I can wait for the prices of some of the newer games to drop.

  4. Just finished my first run through the critical path, having done all the 'major' side jobs I could find before going past the point of no return.  To help with your question, I played the first half on PS4 Pro and the second on PS5, and as @Floshenbarnical has said many times already it's like a different game when it's running at a smooth 60fps with very few glitches or streaming issues.  Having seen the Digital Foundry videos I reckon you'd have an even better experience on XSX.

And boy what an experience it is. For all the jankiness that's there, once I learned more about the systems and found a play style that suited me (soften everyone up with short-circuit and then non-lethal clean-up with the Widow Maker) the story came alive.  Without looking at any spoilers beforehand I made the choices that I felt were right and in my ending:

    Spoiler

I went in to Arasaka with Panam, which seemed fitting for my V, and then I took my body back afterwards.  In the epilogue, I was genuinely happy when Judy was waiting for me, and we've sailed off into the Arizona sunset together to enjoy what time I have left, unless Panam's mates can find a way to fix my woes.  This was the perfect ending for me so I'm glad it happened with no cheating.

I then went back to cyberspace to give Johnny the body and played through that epilogue, Judy's voicemail in the credits was heartbreaking.

Now I'm going back through the last mission on the Hanaka path, and it's great that it's so different, the boardroom is an amazing environment.  Going to do the Johnny and Rogue mission as well to see what those endings are like, but the Nomad ending will always be mine.

Once I've mopped up the other endings I think I'm going to wait for the PS5 patch, and then come back in as a man for another go at life, I've still got loads of other side jobs to search out and I'll see if I can make things go differently next time in the main jobs.

  5. Do you remember a while ago Currys started a lottery to win the chance to buy a PS5?  Well today I got an email saying I'd been chosen to have the chance to buy one, but I've managed to get one in the meantime from Very.  If anyone is still looking for themselves I'm happy to send you the link and the code.  I have no idea if it's tied to my email so it might not work but it's probably worth a try?  Code says it has to be used by 12 May, first to PM gets it.

    Edit: Gone to @Tempy

  6. When the S was announced I thought it was a genius idea, and the way it was sold by Microsoft as ‘doing everything the X can do but at 1440p’ made me very interested. I don’t have either an X or S yet, as PS5 was always going to be my first new-gen console, purely due to my library, but having the S as a second console was the intention.

However, now that I’m a framerate whore it’s not so simple. Playing everything at 60fps on PS5 has been very refreshing and I hope that this stays the default or at least an option throughout the gen. From all the digital foundry vids I’ve seen, there are enough cases of Series X targeting 60fps with a dynamic res (below the 4K expectation), with S dropping to 30 so as not to drop the res too far below 1080p, that it’s making me reconsider. I’m the first to agree that resolution is not that important, but I worry that with some games already denying S owners a 60fps option this is going to become more commonplace. Now I think I will wait until I can get an X as the balance of cost/benefit is more in its favour for me.

  7. As 3 of the 4 European finalists are English clubs this year, maybe they should propose a break-away 'Primo' League where the big 6 compete against 14 invited English clubs to be the Champions of England, with the top 4 going into the following season's play-offs against other elite Euro clubs?

  8. Demon’s has shortcuts to any of the worlds you’ve previously been in, but if you select one that you weren’t in when you last played it will warn you that going there will cause you to lose all your souls so you have to be careful. The first card is generally ‘resume’ so seems to work ok for me.

  9. Miles and Demon’s are the only true PS5 games I’ve played, and both of those have activity cards on the Home Screen to jump straight back into where you were without even seeing the title screen. It’s not Quick Resume but it’s still mighty impressive. Also the fast travel in Miles is legitimately amazing, like less than 2 seconds every time.

  10. Anna Maxwell-Martin is so good that it’s impossible to believe her performance as Carmichael is anything other than intentionally snide.

    Spoiler

Is it just the result of a career’s worth of fighting in a man’s world to get where she is, or is she actively hampering the investigation on the Chief’s orders?

I always got the impression from the last series that she was straight as an arrow, but they’re certainly inferring otherwise here even if it is just misdirection.

Personally, it's shown me how much I hate football behind closed doors.  I think it's suffered so much - an atmosphere-less stadium just feels dreadful, and many teams' form is worse without the backing of the fans.

Just a point on this: I agree with you entirely, but I wonder whether the owners feel the same way.  I would not be surprised in the slightest if post-pandemic, all the focus will be slowly shifted into filling all the seats which are visible on camera as a minimum, at the highest price possible, to corporate sponsors etc etc (a bit like how Wembley is always half-empty straight after half-time).  It doesn't matter if they're not cheering and chanting, because for the TV viewers they've already proved that the ambience can be provided by artificial crowd noise.  Again I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of matches are transmitted with 'enhanced' crowd audio, just like with the FA cup semi at the weekend.  Just needs a bit more training for the monkey/AI that presses the 'Goal' button.

  12. I’m sure that if this does end up happening PSG will end up joining. Who knows about Bayern and Dortmund, but if UEFA buckle then where’s the downside for them?

What happens in 10 years time when Tottenham and Arsenal are consistently finishing last and getting an ever tinier slice of the money, with their B teams languishing at the bottom of the Premier League or even in the Championship. When Real and Barcelona decide they only want 16 teams in the super league so they don’t have to play so many boring games, it won’t be so nice to be the smallest fish in the big pond.

  13. My gut feeling is that whichever way this goes the big clubs are going to win. If they do break away they will still be allowed to stay in their individual leagues as otherwise the money is gone and the leagues will die. If they are convinced to back down they’ll only end up getting more power in the Champions’ League and how long before this comes up again?

The only way to stop this is for all the clubs to be banned immediately from all competitions for this and at least next season to show the organisations aren’t messing around. It would be amazing if Man City could be banned from the Champions’ League twice in the same season.

Much as this isn’t the players’ fault, there needs to be a hard response from FIFA and UEFA banning all relevant players from international football.

If this doesn’t happen, then I think this is already lost, and the big six will have their way. Even the new Champions’ League format is terrible.

  14. It's a bit weird that I'm excited for this coming for free, despite having bought (at full price no less) and completed it at launch on disc, owning a digital US copy, and it being available on PS Now to which I am subscribed.  I've never done the DLC though so I might see if I can jump into that once I've cleared the rest of my backlog.  A PS5 patch would be most welcome.

  15. I've just started this on PS5 and I'm really enjoying it.  Someone should show this to Rockstar as an example of how to ride around on a horse and general character movement.  Also a really simple thing like picking up resources is super quick and easy rather than taking an age.  The sword combat is great so far, and reminds me in a really good way of the early Assassin's Creed games, especially how the insta-kill standoffs feel.

  16. As a neutral, that McTominay ‘foul’ decision is an utter disgrace and just serves to sully the reputation of the game and further cement what a disaster the implementation of VAR is. For the record, I’m all for a video review system but the way VAR is being used is utter balls.

There is an easy way to solve today’s issue though. Any time a player goes down clutching their head (or any other body part), they get stretchered off for assessment and are only allowed back after 10 mins. Similarly, I would have instant yellow cards for mouthing or crowding the ref, and 10 yard penalties to force people to behave.

I love the game but displays like this just make it more difficult to appreciate and I can’t see it getting any better.
