  1. Even in defeat, that was the most enjoyable England game I've watched since... well, I forget. I'm not convinced swapping Rooney out for Barkley will do us any favours. I'm not on board the Barkley hype train yet I'm afraid. Sterling times his runs and knows when to take players on, whereas Barkley has a bit of the Aaron Lennons about him and just seems to blunder aimlessly into traffic. However, I do think our shape went completely once the subs came on. Wilshere went forward (which was the point of course), Barkley sat deeper than Sturridge had been and Lallana going left put Rooney in the middle. With the bank of Italians sat in their defensive third, it was far too crowded in there and England reverted to type of running into each other and limiting their own options for a pass. So that being said, it's difficult to criticise the subs who came on too much because by that point they were stuck in a system that was bound to get clogged. Still. Plenty of positives going forward. Defence still doesn't seem all that to me, and I wasn't convinced by Hart for the Balotelli lob. Should have been getting to his line much quicker in my opinion. Uruguay didn't look great today, so I'm not sure how Thursday will go. There's a lot of pressure on both teams now as the loser could well go out. Italy might qualify on Friday but they'll still want to finish top of the group, so I don't think they'll give Uruguay an easy game, and we shouldn't count on Costa Rica being 3 points in the bank. Certainly going to be a terrible game on the nerves! Anyway - come on Japan!!
  2. Last minute goal in the Colombia match robbing me of my perfect score! Ahh well, if that's the worst thing that happens to me this World Cup...
  3. Picked the wrong match to skip and build my new dining room table didn't I? "INah, be a boring 1-0 to Spain. I'll build the table and watch Chile later. You watch what you like." So now I'll be up til 4 catching the repeat. Thank God it's the weekend.
  4. Better than anything Joe Hart's in. I'm expecting him to appear in one for a Santander mortgage next, about how easy they made his mortgage application and thus allowing him to focus on the game. Then one for Castrol oil, about how it keeps his engine cool, letting him just focus on the game. And Shreddies, keeping his hunger locked up, allowing him to just focus on the game. Probably others, but I don't really watch that much tv.
  5. I cannot believe how excited I am for this. I think it's possibly helped by not having any hope whatsoever in England, so I can just enjoy 4 weeks of football. I've been smiling like crazy ever since I left work. It's like the World Cup started the moment I left the office.
  6. Nice touch to include Diana Ross in there!

Well I can't disagree with you, but I still wouldn't want to bet against it! I thought Djokovic would win today after how close he was last year, but once he lost that second set it seemed all over to me. I'm not sure who else can challenge Nadal on clay over the next few years. Of course, this is all assuming Nadal stays fit. I'd love to see Fed get one more, and Wimbledon's his best chance, Sadly, I don't think he is as consistent over the two weeks in the 5 set matches. In his prime he'd get to the final without dropping a set, and I think he has to do the same now if he wants to keep going over 5 sets with one of the big boys in the semis and final (or quarters possibly now if his seeding is a lot lower). I just don't see him managing that.

So, 3 away from Federer's 17. I wouldn't want to bet against him doing it.

How much are we valuing Barkley at if the £30m for Cesc isn't enough??

Think Djokovic had to win that second set. Nadal to do it in 4 now.
  11. Danny Mills on the BBC: Yeah, we just need to hold our own and hope something magical happens so we can beat, uh, Honduras. Edit: 10 man Honduras.
  12. I can't believe I predicted we'd get out of our group beat Costa Rica.

It's even part of the stock commentary on FIFA as I recall (or the last version I played anyway).
  15. Bale! Bale! Ba-oh... nevermind. Anyway, the odds must be pretty short on Ramos getting a red now.
  16. We're doing a sweepstakes round the office for the World Cup. Today we drew the teams, and I picked out Brazil Now watch as they go all France on me and self-destruct, failing to register even a point and finishing last in their group.
  17. I'm sure I have some others, but the one that sticks out to me is getting the Hand Cannon in Resident Evil 4. Mercs was great but I found Hunk and Leon, and to a lesser extent Ada, really difficult to use and rack up the required points. Krauser was quite easy on all the levels, and the rest were fairly straight forward on the Village level, but on the others I genuinely never thought I would do it. It was the bosses in each area that always fucked me over. Krauser could plough straight through them with his arm, but I really struggled with the others. It was fun trying though and I kept at it for ages, getting close and starting to believe that maybe, just maybe I could do it. I managed to clear the castle level with Hunk, and another with Ada, and another with Hunk and then Leon and so on, my belief growing in some respects but the Hand Cannon still seeming to be out of reach. Somehow, after endless, endless deaths I found myself surprisingly, tantalisingly close. I remember I had just the helicopter compound bit to do with Hunk. I pretty much needed everything to go perfectly for me to get it. I hit the magic number with about a minute of time left, a minute I spent running and running and pooing. I didn't want to kill anyone else, go near anyone else. I just wanted it to end. The controller nearly fell out of my hand with the amount I was sweating until that clock finally, finally hit zero. It was a feeling of relief more than anything in the end. Sadly, the Hand Cannon is actually a bit boring and I hardly ever used it after giving it a test run. Still proud that I managed to finish Mercs though.

    Arsenal

Well done to Arsenal. I thought you guys thoroughly deserved it in the end and I was really pleased for Wenger. I felt terrible for him at 2-0 and imagining all the shit he would get after the game, today, next season and so on. I actually thought his lip was going to go a bit when he was being interviewed and was trying to avoid the "will you stay?" question just so he didn't break up on tv rather than not wanting to answer it (although he doesn't look like he wants to answer it in an interview like that anyway). You guys will watch Arsenal more than me, but is Ozil ok? Whenever I see him he just doesn't look happy. Maybe he's just quiet, a sort of Scholes type personality, but I was surprised to see him in the dressing room early. I hope he stays. I think with more pace around him and a truly top class striker he'll have a great season. Also, with all my ranting and screaming and bemoaning first touches, wayward passes and awful defending, Saturday showed that I probably can't deny that I've quite the soft spot for Arsenal these days. Not sure how that happened.
  19. To add to this serious discussion, it's been revealed that Fulham were relegated after their new owner completely ignored the excellent advice he was being given.

    Snooker

Don't see Ronnie doing it from here. He's not getting the rub of the green and I think Selby has completely disrupted the way he likes to play. Then again, I still can't believe he missed that pink.

    Snooker

I don't understand what O'Sullivan is doing at times - his shot selection has been poor, his execution has been sloppy... his head looks gone to me.

    Snooker

It's definitely fascinating, though I'd argue the standard hasn't been particularly high. This last frame of the afternoon session - I cannot believe how much luck Selby has had. So many snookers he's fluked.
