Edited a bit for clarity. You're right they have some value, but converting the currencies (80p per key UK prices if bought in bundles of 5 or more), the rough value of a champions league 1 crate is 11.4p. Considering they come once every few hours, they're probably worth less than the electricity used to get them.

@BruceBruce I use the reddit exchange and crates arent worth 2 or 3 for a key, they're so easy to get by farming, its currently 7 CC1s for for one key (taken from current pricing thread). Seeing as Bradigor wont be farming and one single key on a crate has an 80% chance of giving you a decal, it's really not worth his time. He's better off asking us here if he fancies something. current rates: 1 key = 7 CC1/3, 9 CC2, 5-6 CC4, 3 PCC, 1 TC

When you come across players (and you will) who are just driving straight and not playing - they are farming for crates with their accelerator elastic banded down. I love the cosmetics, it really gives the game a new feel, I use spikey wheels to make my car feel wider too. But you dont get them from keys, they're a con. I've got like 5 lightening boosts (that looks really good), the heart boosts, toon smoke boosts etc etc. If you play with someone regularly who's been on a while they;ll have loads of stuff they could give you. Crates themselves though, worthless, forget em.

Crates are worth nothing, you get them every hour or two of playing. In fact they're an anti-gift, they're poison. I gave hogg about 10 crates when he gave me his dark matter boost and he went and spent money on keys and got nothing from them. Sounds like its all new to you so heres what you do regarding crates. When you earn them, look at the contents and see if there's anything you fancy. They will be skins for cars, new car models, new boosts. Some of them are great, i love the new boosts and cars, but when you spend money on keys all you get is decals. Look at the contents of crates 1-4, decide what you like, and ask on here. All it is is just getting cosmetic items to change yourgame up a bit after staring at the same car for years - I use the import ZSR car and the proton boost, and I've got about 30 crates and a load of items sat there.

Having a great time back on BO3, once I got it out of my system that you should really stick with the latest, I'm much happier. Seems a lot of people agree too, its still popular and even getting new DLC. It's quite funny to come back 6 months later and see all the ridiculous new outfits, gestures, quotes, guns, the new store and so on. Each weapon category has at least one or two new (darkened) items in it, and I keep hearing weird guns making funny sounds, like clicking disc launchers and so on. Still, great to be back on and nice to have maps with actual foliage and buildings, rather than empty corridors and space crates.

Seriously? It's blurry on a monitor never mind blown up to a 50" 4k tv. It's a nice piece of work but it looks better in 3d on a real machine.

Yes emulators look nice but I was playing it 3 years ago on my Wii U with pro pad versus the forum online. An offline Mariokart 8 without friends lists, a big TV and racing others is pointless.
