  1. dood's journal.

The last hunt did not begin well. I went to see if could help Eileen (2nd time)..

but despite nearly beating him/her the first time, I subsequently got spanked about 8 times.

So, feeling a bit like I was wasting precious gaming time after 20mins, I headed back to CC's boss..

And good grief exactly the same thing happened!! Not good.

Steeling my resolve, I decided to try some exploration, as that was likely to go better. I hoped!

Off I went back to UCW..

That trio of blue-eyed wolves smashed me previously, and it took me a few lives to clock there was a narrow doorway I could kite them to. I was grateful, if a little sad, but it meant I could at least pass them.

Enjoyed the rest of the area, didn't expect to come across two bosses in quick succession! Beat both first time too :)

    Celestial Emissary:

The Daughter of the Thing That Could Not Attack Left:

So pretty productive in the end! :D

Levelled up a bunch. I've reached 25 Str and now the increases in damage (for my Ludwig's) seem to be dropping off, though Skl suddenly seems to have gotten a lot more potent, strangely. Now granting 6dmg per level instead of 3. No idea what's going on there. I've only got about 15!

    Nice work dood.

Similar progress to me last night as it happens...

Finally overcame ML (see previous fist-pump related post) and then cleared out UCW...

Those three beasts are tough unless you segment them as you say. I also hate the squid face fuckers with their grab attack which, apparently, I can't dodge or stun them out of. Must have used 10 vials just on those.

    Killed CE...

Worse boss of the game so far in my opinion. It actually took me three attempts but purely because I got lasered on the first when he had about a pixel of health left and I thought I'd pop him before he could fire (read: being greedy). Second I dropped off a ledge and got trapped in the scenery with a glitch and he just stood there killing me while I couldn't move. Third attempt was a walk in the park. :)

Moved on to EDOTC and got close on my first time (about 1/4 health left) but...

I found out about her triple laser attack for the first time when I was too close to see it pop up and got one-shoted. It was late so I turned it off then but it certainly seems doable. I may follow your lead and get right in close and see how I go.

Cashed in some echoes along the way and now up to level 78 (45 hours played).

  2. Get in! ML is down. :omg:

Had a couple of days off from the game but came back to it afresh with your tips in mind. Managed to pop him on my first attempt to day in 3 minutes flat. Video below...

I took on board the hint on parrying. As you can see I'm rubbish at it, but the two I did manage to hook up with viscerals made a world of difference to the middle stint, good advice. All in this took me a nice round 10 attempts.

Chuffed to bits (it resulted in actual fist pumps), thanks for the help. Now off to UCW.

  3. Well it's taken a little while but I feel like I've just made a rite of passage... I just properly rage quit a 'souls' game for the first time.

Currently caught between ML (a rock) and NoM (a hard place). Need a break.

  4. Use the pillars to get close & once you're actually in his face, he should do the magic attacks less so you can concentrate on dodging & getting your shots in.

When he jumps away, close the distance back down again quickly.

Second / third phase, manage your health well & get the timing down to dodge the jumping attack. I died more times on the last phase, when I'd got him down to the last few hits than any other, as if get greedy & not back off to heal in time.

    Cheers, I'll try that. :)

I get to the 2nd/3rd phase pretty much every time (with my cane and a bolt paper I can stun lock him with my R1 attack until he's about a third down on health) and then always when he speeds up I seem to get caught up in some sort of insta-death loop where I take some damage and then he hits/reaches me quicker than I can use vials even when trying to dodge around the pillars.

I think gun parrys would would be really good here but as I rarely use them I'm not the best and fail more than I hit. He just seems to be the complete package with dangerous ranged attacks, really quick manoeuvrability, decent reach and also hits pretty hard. By a country mile the hardest I've fought so far!

Decided to sack him off for now and take down TOR instead...

...which is like night and day difficulty wise (I can't believe these two bosses are approximately at the same point of the game).

Took me two attempts but only because I got greedy on the final sliver of health first time round and didn't realise a) my health was low, and b) he'd spewed up everywhere and I was constantly taking damage. Second attempt I only used 3 vials all fight (including one from being mauled by a hound on the way there). Probably the easiest I've fought other than WoH.

Off to clear out the LB (again as I did it when clearing NF/A earlier on). I presume there will be some new surprises in store. :)

  5. Okay so ventured properly into UV this afternoon... this just got real very quickly!

Wandered around largely lost and (somehow) stumbled across the second lamp. From there I've died against those 3 hunters a few times so have ignored them for now but on my last attempt managed to pretty much clear out everything in the lower section of UV and found TOR. However, I only had 9 vials left and was carrying 85k in echoes for my efforts so I've hunter's marked back for now and will give him a crack later on.

I love that you almost stumble into the old (changed) gaol area without really realising. I was chasing a wolf type thing down and then suddenly realised that I was in the room with the crumbled wall just before DBP and then it all clicked. The level design is awesome.

For those in the know... is there a quick route to run back to TOR?

I've found the lift from the first lantern down and also the halfway exit you can step out onto with the teleport that takes you a bit closer. Is it best to go down the stairs and just leg it past everything on the street, or is there a quicker way? Most bosses I've found so far have got some sort of shortcut route that is pretty doable without fighting anyone.

  6. Just to chip in 2p worth on the beginner character build stakes...

This is my first 'souls' experience and I went with Threaded Cane/Pistol and have focused pretty much solely on VIT, END, SKL (and a tiny bit of STR).

I personally found it quite forgiving to begin with as the whip mode has a long enough reach for some crowd control, but is also quick and therefore gives you a bit more leeway before you get the timing down with attacks/dodging (i.e. if you take that extra/greedy attack you can often just get a cheeky dodge in rather than taking something painful to the face while the attack animation finishes).

I have now expanded to try out the Axe and LHS (and the sparky T) and use them in some specific scenarios but I always find the speed/reach of the cane suits me as my primary. I haven't really found the weaker damage a problem at all except in a couple of incidents (during which I just crack out LHS for some smack down).

I'm not trying to say I know it all or that there is only one solution, just offering a complete novice's perspective to the skill build route. :)

  7. I find the cane to be a funny weapon. When I use it, it seems weak and flimsy, but when I watch a YT video of someone fighting with it, it looks like it deals absolute death to everything. I saw a BSB playthrough with one and it seems to be hitting him far more often than I do with my axe/saw combination. I've got spare shards as my main weapons are upgraded to their current maximum, so I might give it a shot tonight.

I've used the cane as my primary for the whole game so far.

It did feel a bit flimsy on the damage to start with but I've modded it up to +7 so far (and my character is a VIT/END/SKILL build) and it's pretty solid now. True, it's not to the Ludwig/Hammer/Axe level of damage but is still my weapon of choice 99% of the time. The great thing about it is the reach/arc (it hits from far away and everyone in front of you) and it's also quick which means I can use R2/charged attacks far more often in a normal fight than with the slower weapons.

I've found END is really really important too as it allows you to roll in, unleash a barrage and roll out again. With the bigger weapons I've sometimes found myself out of stamina and stranded in no-mans land.

  8. I'd be interested in a specific answer to this also.

You can find it in the Gaol bit of UV. It's at the far end of one of the streets. Think it's the left one but I may be wrong. :)

Cleared B and killed RVS tonight...

Meh. I thought B had a lot of potential but ended up being very small, and RVS is definitely the least enjoyable boss for me so far. I didn't think it was particularly hard but weirdly I ended up dying more than any other boss due to the stupid insta-kill meteor stun plus bunny hopping spiders. My tactic in the end was just ignore everything and run past hitting R2, R1 R1 R1, turning round and repeating.

On the plus side it's quick to get back to and easy to recover your lost echoes each time, I just found it a bit disappointing as an encounter.

  9. I think I've missed something.

I have the tonsil stone, but I've killed Rom now. I have no idea where to go. It seems like I'm back in cathedral ward but the baddies have changed and there are massive aliens climbing on stuff. I killed the hunter at the Amelia place.

Ah right, okay. Sorry, not sure I can help you then I'm afraid as you're actually a bit past me. It seems everyone takes there own paths on these games and...

I've done NF (and A) before even finding Rom so far

  10. I've killed A in the NF and have no idea where to go. I can only think of a door in a tower with pots to smash nearby that's locked...anyone steer me pse

A couple of (I think) subtle tips below.

I'm assuming you got the Tonsil Stone from the FF? If so then that area can lead to another optional area (CC) and also to a boss that takes the main story forward to the next main area (B).

Let me know if you want more detail.

  11. Any tips?

    - Keep moving and rolling all the time

    - Try and manoeuvre yourself so the cleric and katana guy are close when you strike so you hit both

    - Don't get greedy, hit once or twice and move on

    - Spread damage around all three so they are all low and then take them down one by one in quick succession (this minimises the later buffs they get)

I'll pop a video up in a bit.

  12. Quick tip... If you double stack 'communion' runes the effect multiplies. My blood vial carry total is now 24 which is pretty useful for boss fights.

EDIT: My mistake, turns out there are different levels of each rune with different bonuses. I didn't realise as they were both just called the same name (no lesser/greater or number with them) so I assumed they were two identical ones that had multiplied.

  13. After VA took me about ten attempts, The WoH went down first go. :D

She was surprisingly easy actually, albeit it took me a couple of minutes to figure out what was going on. I immediately BHM'd my way back the first time I reached her as I had some echoes I wanted to cache in, but I could have saved myself the trouble really.

Nicely done. Interestingly, yours didn't seem to go into the additional phases...

When there is more than one witch with multiple health bars. I wonder if it's because you managed to lay down pretty big damage with Ludwig's so it didn't get a chance to kick off the change before it was dead?

  14. Any subtle hints as to where to go next? I've just cleared HCL area, VA and BSB are down, but they all lead to dead ends. Do I have to go back to

the prison area where the sackmen take you? That area's well hard.

No you don't (but its good for grinding some echoes). Head back to Hunter's Dream and have a chat there.

  15. Got annoyed with NF so found my way to CC. Managed to get to the boss on my first run through with some very, very careful exploration. Also picked up a few new weapons (at last!), clothing and other goodies. I cashed in at the boss so will be back later for a proper go. :)

He's tough. Got him down to about 1/3 health left but he cheesed me in a stun lock kill when I had 12 vials still to use. :( Getting angry and making mistakes so going to have a break and come back to show him who's boss later.

  16. Although you don't really need to fight them, you can run past to the building.

I did exactly that and cleared everything else before Hunter's Marking it back with my 55k once I kicked off ML. Weird how they are the first things you meet and are by far the hardest enemies on the level. Going to jump back in and give ML a try I think.

  17. So, I just decided to take my exploration to CC (rather than NF or B) and I've had a bit of a wake up call. Maybe I'm having a bad day or something but I've just had my arse well and truly handed to me several times just trying (and failing) to get to the first door! Bearing in mind I've just been through FF twice without dying and did SOY on my first try yesterday, this was a bit of a shock to the system! :o

Back to the school of hard knocks for me. Any tips for...

These weird crawling insect hag-like things? They seem to have pace/leap, reach and power, I can't seem to parry them either (although it's not my strongest tactic).

  18. I've got my CC item & I've run the length of Hemwick twice, looking for the relevant thing, am I in the right location?

You are. :) I had the same trouble and ending up killing everything on the level and I eventually stumbled across it just wandering around. Actual location spoilered below...

Walk up to the obelisk at the crossroads just before the hill to the witches abode.
