  1. Nearing 90 shines now in Super Mario Sunshine, with all of the ‘main’ shines done and the final boss killed; I’ve got most of the secret shines to go, and a bunch of 100 coin shines. I’ll have to go for 100%, but I think I’ll need to use a guide to get all of the blue coins. I think the most annoying one so far was the secret stage on the island around Delfino Plaza - you need to get a Yoshi over there, which is bad enough, but the stage itself is fucking woeful.
  2. I think I felt this playing the watermelon festival in Super Mario Sunshine.
  3. Super Mario Galaxy just shows that most Wii games would look great in HD. They looked shit and fuzzy in their native res even in 2006.
  4. The hardest thing about Super Mario Sunshine is not gnawing your hands off while you’re playing it.
  5. Well there’s the watermelon shine out the way. What a gloriously shit piece of game design. Still love Sunshine though.
  6. It’s less having a problem with repeating long sections, and more about those long sections being incredibly dull and/or frustrating, which tends to be the case with Yoshi. Anything involving Mario is fine - I love jumping around and sliding about, which makes controlling Yoshi all the more jarring.
  7. Hard stages are fine (the long final stage in Super Mario Odyssey comes to mind, a good example of challenging gameplay), but the Yoshi stages are plain dull/frustrating. The one where you have to hop between the boats around Delfino Plaza is an epic pain in the arse; if you fail you need to get another Yoshi and sit around all day waiting for the boats. It just isn’t fun, and surely would’ve/should’ve been chopped if this had more development time. Using the fruit machine to get the yoshi in Ricco Harbor is a pain in the arse too, and you need to do it every time. I had to jump do
  8. Yeah, I’m loving Super Mario Sunshine. 30-odd shines now. It does have all the hallmarks of a Mario game that was released too early, and didn’t receive the level of polish the other games have: repeated bosses (that fucking gooper blooper), frustrating Yoshi stages, and clunky/overly difficult shines (although I completed the pachinko stage on my second go because I’m a fucking Mario wizard). I doubt Yoshi being destroyed by water in a game filled with water would have survived had the game been in development for another year or two. I think it’s the beautiful setting and incredi
  9. You get sent to Nintendo hell and can only play the watermelon level in Super Mario Sunshine.
  10. Not a bad list, truth be told. Breath of the Wild is probably the best game I’ve ever played, so seeing it in the number one spot sits fine with me. Also great to see The Outer Wilds in there too. The only one that really stands out is Uncharted 4 - what a boring and unimaginative pile of shit that was. I’d also put Super Mario Odyssey, The Witness, and Return of the Obra Dinn in there somewhere. The indie game was king of this generation for me. I’ve never played or even heard of Kentucky Route Zero, but this has me intrigued.
  11. The sound effect when one of its legs twangs off is one of my favourite in a game ever.
  12. No way, the water pack came first and they built a game around it. It’s why every stage is either filled or surrounded with water.
  13. I strongly disagree with this Super Mario Odyssey isn’t a collectathon - it rewards experimentation, exploration, and using Mario’s move set to climb to high or difficult to reach places, with moons. It’s peppered with optional challenges and puzzles, which are also rewarded with moons, and encourages you to try things you wouldn’t normally. I love all of the games in this pack, and the Mario series is my favourite of all time, but Super Mario Odyssey is the best of them all in my eyes. It’s an absolute triumph.
