  1. Slowly but surely, people are realising they shouldn't allow Microsoft to dictate terms. XboxShun To many, this is futile, but personally, I think that by publically stating you want nothing to do with MS and Xbone you at least providing feedback. Too often people suffer in silence, be it videogames or other more important worldly issues.
  2. That'd be a site I'd want to read - something that really gets inside gaming without worrying about covering the same stuff as everyone else. Of course, people don't bother trying to make sites like this. The general rule of thumb is that getting visits is down to pissing people off, early reviews, baiting fanboys, leaking screenshots or making stuff up, so that's what newcomers concentrate on. Of course, it is totally possible to get traffic without resorting to such methods - it just takes longer. You simply need to survive for however long it takes to (a) build up a decent amount of loyal signed-up readers and (B) get hundreds of thousands of pages listed well in Google. Once those things happen, you're laughing. You can write what you want and how you want because the guaranteed traffic is there. And you should be able to keep a reasonable amount of adverts on site too. GameSpot is the world's busiest website not because most people like it the best, but because it's the biggest. Nearly 19 million pages listed in Google. Even if only one per cent of those pages managed to bring in one person during a single day, then you've got... 190,000 visits. For one day. 5,700,000 for 30 days. Of course, that size and number of pages is out of reach for most start ups, but sites can do OK on much less.

  4. After only just completing a mission, I spot this tubby security guard walking along drinking coffee. I decide to give him aggro and walk into him. He drops his coffee and gets all preachy, so as he walks past I lock on and give him a kick. Not a big kick, a medium kick that connects straight with his arse. It then turns out he's actually a cop. Fucker spins round and pulls a gun on me, so with no energy left after the previous mission, I leg it in shock as he gives chase. I run across the road, only to get hit by a random police car, which finishes me off. Probably the oddest thing to happen yet was when I decided to beat up a tramp for giving me lip. I hit him once, at which point someone else got out of their car shouting. I figure I'm now going to have to fight two people, but no, the guy sides with me and starts thumping the tramp. What I currently find irresistible is pushing people off things. I wandered down from the hospital to find a guy sat on a wall eating. I walked up to him, looked at him for a couple of seconds and then smacked him clean in the face, causing him to fall backwards off the wall, into the bigger drop behind. I could hear him swearing and threatening me from behind the wall, but he had no way of getting to me. I also caught a guy having a fag break right next to a big drop in that area with all the new highway bridge developments. He didn't even see me coming. Oh, and speaking of fag breaks, just remembered: I saw a load of fast foodies smoking outside the burger place, and managed to knock over three of five by ghostying a motorbike into them.

Print the above story off and show it to them if they resist. If they try and tell you to do as the news piece says and get onto MS for a replacement disc, explain to them that you don't want a swap, you want your money back. If they still resist, phone their head office and ask that someone tell whichever jobsworth it is serving you that legally he has to play ball.

  7. Magazines wish they could book that many ads!
  8. The reason is that games mags are not purchased by the majority of gamers any more, so it's less effective advertising in them. Other sectors often appeal to a lower majority to start with, so a low circulation publication in such a sector is often hitting a higher percentage of consumers. Or in other words, there's not ten times as many people looking at a website about the same subject, necessitating advertising there instead.
  9. He's right. Mag advertising is really harsh these days - everyone wants to advertise online or on TV. Activision, for example, doesn't advertise in print at all any more. These days games mags really have to be ultra competetive to convince companies to advertise, which means offering pages at low prices. The days of games mags making "tens of thousands" per page are long gone. You only have to view the eight-page-strong porno ads in certain single format mags to realise that magazines aren't getting offered the adverts they really want.
  10. You could get the best writers ever on a magazine and it'd still be outsold by the ones with the prettiest bags and best free gifts. Quality editorial doesn't sell mags any more. Games mags won't completely die out, that's not very realistic, but in a few years time there won't be as many on the shelves.

Sales for the new Official PlayStation Magazine have probably been affected by the lack of a demo disc for the first issues, and a lack of decent demos on those that have been released thus far. When things pick up on the disc front, so will sales and that's when Future will ABC it. I think Future did a similar thing for Official Xbox 360 actually.
  13. It depends how even the 'next-gen' battle is really. Multiformat mags used to do OK back when things were competitive. With three thriving formats (give the PS3 a chance - it'll get there) in the marketplace, multiformat mags could find extra sales due to people actually caring about what's happening on rival platforms again.
  14. Edge is floating around its usual comfort zone. It'll probably go up again next ABC.
