  1. ...

Overall, really enjoyed the CD Blackplastic. Good mixture of tunes (which flowed well) and pointed me in the direction of some new music. Top marks, cheers.

    Cool, glad you liked it!

I don't think the Slum Village track is produced by Jay Dee actually, don't think he's prodcued any of their stuff since Fantastic... The latest album is on eMusic though.

I also haven't heard anymore Matson Jones, New York City Fuck Off was on this years Rough Trade - Counter Culture album... I know it didn't make the long player though. Judging from the track here I think the album is worth a stab, I hadn't realised it was on eMusic but will pick it up myself once I get some more credits!

Some of the Secret Machines stuff is a bit longer and progressive than the track here but I love pretty much everything they've done and really recommend you check some out.

  2. I wouldn't mind a tracklisting first, I've been away over the weekend so haven't had a chance to listen the CD anymore. Put it on when I got home from work today though - I'm on the Rootsy track 3 :P

    1. Mos Def - Modern Marvel

    2. William DeVaughn - Be Thankful For What You've Got (props to Ant73 for this)

    3. (The 'Rootsy' one!) Slum Village - 05

This is taken from their latest album, 'Slum Village', and was a pleasent surprise becase I had (like many as the song suggests) writtent them off after their second LP 'proper' Trinity, which was good, but nothing on the 'as good as the title suggests' Fantastic Volume 2 - which you should get if you haven't got it already.

    4. Ursula Rucker - Philadelphia Child

    5. A Hawk and a Hacksaw - Portland Town

    6. Matson Jones - New York City Fuck Off

    7. The Roots - Star

    8. Ed O.G. & Da Bulldogs - Love Comes and Goes

    9. Dave Grusin - Ascension To Virginity

    10. Secret Machines - See You

    11. The Magnetic Fields - Long Vermont Roads

    12. Hanne Hukkulberg - Ease

    13. Willy Mason - Hard Hand to Hold

    14. Simon & Garfunkel - The Only Living Boy in New York

    15. Seu Jorge - Rebel, Rebel

    16. Jay Dee (RIP) - Stop

Sadly died a month or so back, this is taken from his frankly bonkers album 'Donuts'. recorded in bed whilst he was dying from lupus. He also produced the afformentioned Slum Village LP Fantastic.

    17. Hmmm... I wonder... Marvin Gaye - What's Going On

Thought this was a nice place to leave it since it's a classic and it takes things full circle since track one is heavily inspired by it.

The theme this month was kind of folk-y, soulful stuff, and it's really meant to be enjoyed with a strong, black coffee or a shot of bourbon, depending on the time of day... Feedback please!

  3. Thanks to Blackplastic for mine, I really like some of it. I'll post some proper impressions after some more listens.

I'm off to Barcelona next Monday so better post a tracklist before then... Do you want it before or after feedback?

Paulando - I'm off to Barcelona next Monday so things are getting tight in terms of me listening to / giving feedback on your CD prior to my arrival back in the UK on Saturday 8th, just so you know...

  4. Just dropped mine in the post box.. Sorry it's a little late, even though it has been finished for ages I didn't get around to 'blending' the tracks till recently, and then sat on it a week whilst getting round to putting a label on the envelope. Whoops.

  5. If I remember correctly, their idea was to make a shoegaze-y album using electronic equipment; not really to make electronica or anything like that.

Maybe that explains the Uncle Mike Hate?

That's what it sounds like to me... I love it and 'Teen Angst' is worth the album price alone :D

  6. 1. Eels - Old Shit / New Shit

Very keen indeed. First time I listened to this I thought, "this sounds like a lively Eels", and guess what? It is. Very nice indeed. They've always been one of those bands who I thought I'd like, but never really got past their big hits to find some other stuff. On this form I suppose I'd better.

    2. Gemma Hayes - Nothing Can

I quite liked this. Very heartfelt. The sort of song you'd expect in a buddy movie's soundtrack playing in the background if the two leads fall out and go their seperate ways.

    3. The Cardigans - I Need Some Fine Wine and You, You Need to be Nicer

Not too sure about this. Not tough enough to be a rock out, not leftfield enough to be make a good pop record that they were good at. It's ok, but it's a bit midling.

    4. Common - Love Is...

I love this with all my soft heart. Bar Go! my favourite tune on Be. and has been on a couple of my own CD club mixes. The combination between saccarine sweet beats and melodies and the vocal's message is amazing. For anyone else reading this, buy Be!

    5. Tom Vek - Nothing But Green Lights

I loved Tom Vek's last album and was looking forward to new material from him. I'm not sure what the new one's like, but I can see why they picked this as a single, it's very familiar to his earlier work. Still, like it a lot, good to see bedroom bangers still making it.

    6. Art Brut - My Little Brother

Not too impressed. Sounds like a mix of about 5 other bands without having anything of their own. The voice grates massivly! The lyrics are pretty spot on though.

    7. The Chemical Brothers - Close Your Eyes

Not too bad. Never heard this before, I could be forgiven for not thinking this was the Chems.

    8. Arcade Fire - Rebellion (Lies)

Really enjoyed this. I've liked everything I've ever heard from them, but never picked up the album. Something that will be rectified soon. The passion they put into each song is incredible.

    9. Volcano - Apple or a Gun

Like 10 songs in the space of 5 minutes. Weird. Very weird.

    10. WhoMadeWho - Out the Door

Very funky. This has got a bit of a strut on it. Liked it.

    11. Tiefschwarz feat. Matty Safer - Warning Siren

Very cool indeed. I love Tiefschwarz and am looking forward to the Fabric mix they are (apparently) putting out.

    12. Royksopp feat. Chelonis R. Jones - 49 Percent (Ewan Pearson Mix)

The original was one of my favourite songs from last year, so I liked this too. It's pretty much the original with a different 4/4 behind it, buts it's very tastefully done. Ewan Pearson is usually the man with remixes, so it's no suprise this is decent. Much more punchier than the album version too, I could see this going down well in a club. They've dropped the echoing sax in the background though!

    13. M83 - Don't Save Us From The Flames (Superpitcher Mix)

Wow, this is powerful. I could hear Sasha playing this. Really like this a lot.

    14. Juan Maclean - Dance With Me

A bit overlong as it doesn't really do much over the 14 minutes. Still it's quite enjoyable if slightly overlong.

Cool, glad you liked some of it, and I hope you didn't already know *too* much, as I say, these are some of my favourites from this year so it was never going to be particularly highbrow. I guess I'll have to give up on selling people on the wonderment that is 'Dance With Me' though, which is a shame because I just think it is too good for words.

  7. I'll comment on Juan Maclean for you. After seeing you pimp that track on here and name it tune of the year on your blog I grabbed his album. Altogether a very dissapointing listen I thought. The first half an hour was pretty dull and I really didn't see what was so special about Dance With Me. I'll give it another chance but I can't see myself coming round on this one......

Sorry to hear that mate... Nothing on the album lives up to Dance With Me, but that track is (IMHO obviously) fantastic. Try listening again, the first few times I heard it I didn't think it was as good as I do now.

  8. Okay, no 'concept' this month, just a collection of some of my favourite things from 2005:

    1. Eels - Old Shit / New Shit

    2. Gemma Hayes - Nothing Can

    3. The Cardigans - I Need Some Fine Wine and You, You Need to be Nicer

    4. Common - Love Is...

    5. Tom Vek - Nothing But Green Lights

    6. Art Brut - My Little Brother

    7. The Chemical Brothers - Close Your Eyes

    8. Arcade Fire - Rebellion (Lies)

    9. Volcano - Apple or a Gun

    10. WhoMadeWho - Out the Door

    11. Tiefschwarz feat. Matty Safer - Warning Siren

    12. Royksopp feat. Chelonis R. Jones - 49 Percent (Ewan Pearson Mix)

    13. M83 - Don't Save Us From The Flames (Superpitcher Mix)

    14. Juan Maclean - Dance With Me

    Any comments Cubeadvance?

  9. Sigur Ros - Hoppípolla

makes me want to cry like a girl, the kind of song that makes you realise nothing in your life will ever be quite as fantastically beautiful as this... in a good way.

    Ben Folds - Gracie

brings a lump to my throat.

  10. Fabric Live is Friday night at the club. It's basically 'urban' music of all speeds from hip hop to breakbeat to drum n bass. Saturdays at Fabric is the more 4/4 orientated music night featuring house and techno and the like. The 2 different cd series try and reflect this difference I believe.

Correct, but the FabricLive CDs are not necessarily 'urban' - see John Peel's or Jacques Lu Cont's. The FabricLive CDs tend to be a bit more in your face and accesible. The Fabric CDs are deeper and usually have more of a techno feel (but not always - see Swayzak's, Radioactive Man's, Rob Da Bank's or The Amalgamation of Soundz's offerings, any of which could have been Live releases).

  11. I find the PS2 pad fine for things that were always intended to be played using it (Cold Winter, TimeSplitters 2), but not very good for unoptimised conversions of PC games (XIII).

XIII wasn't a conversion of a PC game was it?! It was launched on all formats at the same time I think...

    Yes: November 28 2003.

  12. I've got *almost* all of them and would really recommend:

    Hipp-E and Halo

    Radioactive Man

    Swayzak

    Michael Mayer

    Andrew Weatherall

    Ivan Smaaghe

    Rob Da Bank

    James Lavelle

    Jacques Lu Cont

    Bent

    Bugz in the Attic

    DJ Spinbad

    Adam Freeland

    Aim

    Joe Ransom

    Scratch Perverts

    High Contrast

The best ones are Hipp-E and Halo, Swayzak and Jacques Lu Cont. Essential.

  13. Yeah I had a listen whilst playing on the computer last night, and really enjoyed it. Could I have the tracklist please and I'll post up a few opinions.

    14. Juan Maclean - Dance With Me

  14. If people are enjoying the DJ T and M.A.N.D.Y. stuff posted int his thread may I recommend the Get Physical second anniversary mix CD by M.A.N.D.Y. (it's on Amazon but use an affiliate link!)... I've had it ages, just re-listening and it is absolutely fantastic!

  15. The good name of House has been sullied by that eternal sin, Funky House. Long live the likes of DJ T., M.A.N.D.Y., Trevor Jackson AKA Playgroup, The DFA and labels such as Get Physical, Output and Crosstown Rebels. There's loads of fantastic electronic stuff out there - don't let Mixmag put you off.

  16. It might be quite fun to produce some kind of really grainy late 80's old-school mixtape on a cassette though, spliced with random shoutouts and announcers. Kinda like some New York pirate hip-hop station thing.

You might have to send it with a tape deck though... :P

  17. 9. Oh Mandy  - The Spinto Band

Amazing isn't it! Something Westlife might produce if you cut off their balls and put them in 'Amazing indie pop' training camp for 3 years with only gruel for sustenance.  Only downside is nothing else on the album comes close.

    10. Twin Cinema - The New Pornographers

Probably went under most peoples radars last year. More great indie pop from Canada. This time the album does live up to the promise.

Just found the New Pornographers album on emusic.com so am downloading it... They have The Spinto Band album too, do you think it not worth getting?

  18. Glad you it Blackplastic, I should of given it a title to give you some clue to the theme. It's roughly 1/3 bootlegs, 1/3 classic summery tunes to ward off the winterblues and 1/3 Songs i've found on blogs over the last couple of weeks. Tell your girlfriend she can pop round anytime to check out my 'bootlegs'. fnar fnar

    So tracklisting and 'my thoughts'

    1. Black Beatles - Loo And Placido

A bootleg of Run For Your Life by The Beatles and various hippity hop.

    2. You're The One I Want In The Next Episode  - DisFUnctional DJ

This was a bit of a comedy one but does work amazingly well.

    3. Dr Who On Holiday  - Dean Gray

American Edit was a fantastic bootproject. I heard this was secretly 2 Many Djs/Soulwax and the quality shows.

    4. Whistler's Delight - DJ Riko

Very clever boot. This was actually released on 12" DJ Riko guarantees a good time.

    5. higher than the sun (tone396 mix) - Primalscreamremixed.com

Check out the site for the rest of the album, some of them are quite different.

    6. spinning away  - Brian Eno

Classic Eno Pop from Wrong Way Up with John Cale (most underrated album EVA)

    7. Hurtin' 4 Certain - Russian Futurists

    Stomping summery marching song.

    8. Van Helsing Boombox - Man Man

Keeping up the Russsian theme (although their from Philadelphia)  these guys sound like they've been drinking Vodka since 10am and are now having a singalong.

    11. The King of Carrot Flowers Pt. One - Neutral Milk Hotel

    12. The King of Carrot Flowers Pts. Two and Three - Neutral Milk Hotel

A great reissue I found thanks to this forum. Like you said a bit of everything.

    13. Changes - Seu Jorge

Seu Jorge released a standalone album of Bowie covers and I think this was on it (although I got it from a blog)

    14. Goodbye Stranger - Supertramp

Chosen partially for the title but also one of those great 70s prog-pop bands (See also ELO) that are very uncool but have produced some amazing tunes - and it does sound like Elton John!

It makes you feel all warm inside when you know you've introduced someone to something they like. Behold the power of the mix club!

Supertramp... You got me there! Surprised about the Spinto Band, I was expecting to have heard of them, still, it IS fantastic. Cheers mate!

  19. Okay, feedback for my CD... Sorry it's been a long time coming...!

    1. Some sort of bootleg of The Black Eyed Peas - Let's Get Retarded... This is quite cool but lacks the punch of the only Black Eyed Peas I can be in the same room as... The Neptunes stuff is nice.

    2. One of the songs from Greece mash-up with Snoop Dogg. I think my girlfriend found it funny because she loves Greece. Surprisingly this works quite nicely and anything that makes Snoop look a bit silly is probably a good thing

    3. Dean Grey - Doctor Who on Holiday

Taken from the American Edit album, which I finally got around to 'procurring' a few weeks ago. Easily some of the best mach-ups I've heard. This is actually my girlfriend's favourite track on American Edit... I really like the bit with Bryan Adams but this is good too. Very professionally produced.

    4. Probably my favourite track on the CD, a mash-up of loads of whistles, with the one from Kill Bill, Centerfold (J Geil's Band?) and Wind of Change proving particular favourites. Very funny. Again, my girlfriend liked it.

    5. Primal Scream - Higher Than The Sun... I *think* this is a mash-up, possibly with that crazy dub track about 'Cocaine... Running around my brain' (the name escapes me)? I love Screamadelica but haven't listened to it in ages so this was a pleasent surprise.

    6. Very summery laid back song that sounds like it should be the soundtrack to a holiday TV programme. Haven't got a clue what it is, but it's quite nice.

    7. Again, very summery but this time with a fairly heavy, dubb-y bassline. Not sure who this is either, sounds quite similar to the track before though, and again is good.

    8. Recognise the voice and the style but I'm not sure who it is.... It's quite good, but I get the feeling i is by a band I don't like if that makes sense.

    9. God I really know this now I think about it. Almost sounds like it should be Architecture in Helsinki, or The Go! Team, or even both with some Arcade Fire thrown in. It's brilliant and if I don't find out who it is soon I might get upset.

    10. Hmmm, again, recognise the style but I'm not sure who it is. It's really great though, like this.

    11. Quite cool song that sounds like a cross between The Eels, They Might Be Giants and The Beatles maybe. Like it.

    12. "I Love You Jeeeeeesuuuuuuus Chriiiiiist" it starts... Presume this is tacking the piss a bit! Nice grungy backing and kerazy drumming!

    13. Seu Jorge - Changes. I presumed this was from The Life Aquatic but I can't actually find it on the soundtrack CD... Where did you get it from? I love it anyway, I've been planning to put my favourite Seu Jorge Bowie cover on a Rllmuk CD myself...

    14. I think this is Elton John, but I have to admit my knowledge is lacking. It's quite cool anyway, which is surprising because I always thought I didn't like Elton John and this is the second song I've listened to in the past year by him (presuming this is) that I've liked.

Overall a good CD anyway, thought it was going to be bootlegs all the way through but I don't *think* it was, lots of stuff I enjoyed though AND it came in a weird rubber thing. Track nine is fantastic. What is it?!

  20. Nice to see you liked some of it Murdock, I actually had a completely different CD burnt and ready (full of pretty much all electronic music) but then scrapped it at the last minute and did the new one.

    Tracklisting:

    01. !!! - [!!! #06] Intensify

    Thanks for the comments!

Any chance of an mp3 or something of this? I've got the 'Sunracapellelecroshit Mix 03' version taken from Scratch Massive's Naked mix CD and it is lush, but would like to hear the original...?
