  1. What a poor issue, is it me or does it seem much thinner than usual with even more adverts.

Also, Biffo's column starting with a couple of paragraphs apologising for being so negative to Sony. Wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't completley unrelated to the rest of his column and stuck out like a sore thumb.

  2. the kojima interview was rubbish - the guy is clearly bonkers.

    Do you like the Wii?

yes - but I wish it was more powerful

    What about the PS3?

well - some strange mumblings - I'd rather make people smile than do fancy graphics.

    control stuff about the wii?

well - I'm too old and don't want to jump around to play a game. Folks like me would rather sit back and relax and play a game like MGS.

    he's clearly mental.

And his idea for a zombie MMORPG.

"Yeah you see you play this bloke and then he gets bitten and at that point you relinquish all control of the character but can pay cash money to see him shambling around."

  3. How many were on the "interested after they heard the price" list?

Walked round yesterday and places that sold consoles were on a PS3 pre-order poster blitz and not one of them mentioned the price.

  4. Any links? I need a good laugh ;)

EGM: It seemed like about 50 percent of people in line were there to make a quick buck on eBay. And now we're seeing a lot more units on store shelves.

    JT: Really?

    EGM: Yeah.

JT: If you can find a PS3 anywhere in North America that's been on shelves for more than five minutes, I'll give you 1,200 bucks for it. I can get any retail buyer on the phone with you and get them to verify that there's not a single retail location in America where there's a Playstation 3 on the shelf for sale. They've all been sold in a matter of minutes.

EGM: But we called 18 random retailers, including Best Buy and EB Games, and half of them had PS3s in stock... some had as many as 20 in the store. So you can buy them now if you wanted.

JT: We've shipped more than 1 million PS3 units to North American customers in the first 43 days since launch. I am not sitting in the store to know when they got put on shelves or if a salesperson is giving you accurate information, but if only nine of the 18 stores you contacted had supplies, that seems to be a clear indication that sales continue to be outstanding.

  5. I hope so, MS deserve a real grilling over this.

Although we know we'll just be treated to some chinless wonder claiming the failure rate for 360's is well within the 5 percent failure rate expected for a piece of hardware like this, and that gamers are just a noisy bunch.

I really hope they're not allowed to get off that lightly, and Watchdog actually have some facts and figures to cut them down with.

I hope they bring up the fiasco with the fall update.

  6. Ever thought of working for Microsoft?

What amazed me was how little attention the update fiasco got. Microsoft release an update that kills a £200+ piece of hardware stone dead and hardly a peep. Some cack-handed plebs throw their wiimote at their telly and it's on the 6 O'Clock news.

  7. My launch 360 managed to last for a valiant nine months before constantly freezing up on games with the trademark checkerboard pattern on the screen.

Second 360 lasted a month before the red lights kicked in.

I was unlucky enough to get my replacement third 360 during the 48 hours that connecting to Live and updating would 'brick' any machine that had not had the previous firmware update.

Fourth 360 is ticking along at the mo but I get occasional freezes on games out of nowhere. :D

  8. Also them lines including them gushing about it looking and feeling so damn futuristic that your TV will look obsolete next to it seemed to cross the line from journalistic article to shill territory. By comparison the Wii gets pretty short shrift in the article.

  9. Yay my replacement 360 froze last night when using the guide whilst still on dashboard. This is my fourth by the way (launch model lasted nine months then graphics card died, second got red lights for unknown reasons after a month, third I was unlucky enough to pick up during the 48 hours that applying the dash update would brick any new 360). I treat the bloody thing with kid gloves and it gets more ventilation than my PC so I can't see it's me doing anything and this happened about five minutes after switching it on for the first time that day so I really don;t think its an overheating issue.

Is it just that the guide is a bit flakey? As I think they'll think I'm some kind of weirdo console exchange fetishist if I go into Game for a fifth replacement.

  10. Has anyone with a new 360 actually tried the updated update? I'm getting a 360 tomorrow and I'd like to be sure this one doesn't cause a meltdown :P

I picked up my new box this evening and the update process seemed to go alright.

Why does migrating your account over take so bloody long though, it's only 3mb or something yet it took ages on a 2mb connection.

November has barely begun but Microsoft has seemingly already won the Screw-up of the Month award. Yesterday’s big Fall Dashboard Update does a lot of good things to your 360, like 1080p support and WMV streaming. And it does some bad things, like reducing a lot of Xbox 360s to 4kg paperweights.

Update 13:29: Xbox Support is currently stating if you call them that a fix should be out within 2 days to solve the problems. For possible resolutions they’re suggesting meanwhile check this forumpost. Still no official word from Microsoft via the regular channels.

As our Dutch friends at Fok! Games have discovered, there seems to be a fatal error in the latest update causing recently purchased or replaced Xbox 360s to die on their owners (translated and summarized for your reading pleasure):

When you do the following with your new Xbox 360 you will be getting a fatal and permanent “System Error”. That means you should not do this!

    Boot the console.

    Select the language.

Select “I am a member of Xbox Live”

Mandatory dashboard update will download and install.

The system will reboot and show the 360 logo.

    You’ll get “System Error E71″.

When you get this error the 360 is dead and cannot be revived anymore: you will need to take it back to your store for replacement or contact Xbox Customer Support.

The administrator of Dutch games site Insidegamer has reported this happening to his own 360, but the complaints are found on many forums such as the TeamXbox forums. Until more news is released on this from Microsoft, we suggest using an offline profile if you’ve bought your 360 recently and haven’t connected it to Live before.

  12. Can the previous firmware updates be downloaded and installed offline?

I read someone say that PES made them install some update before they could play, so maybe.

Bet we won't hear Major Nelson mention a peep about this, we'll get "Wooooh hey guys you can now pay cash money to download some virtual cards with Kameo characters on!" but never a warning that if you buy a new Xbox 360 from yesterday onwards it will get terminal console cancer the first time you connect it the system's selling point. ;)

  13. Unless they sort it out and get it fixed, sharpish.

Well they'll have to otherwise the ensuing shitstorm would eclipse giant crabs and broken hinges. The only reason we haven't heard that much about it yet is because it's only effecting those who bought one yesterday, and of those only those who connected it to Live and then only those who bothered to report it online instead of just assuming they got a plain duff one, the majority of people posting on forums would have applied it to a unit that already had the previous update. It does boggle the mind that something like this could happen in the first place

Anyone fancy submitting it as news to Eurogamer or someone? ;)

  14. Anyone updated a July '06 model?

I'm not sure I want to initiate the update when I get home tonight...

If you already have the previous dash update then you should be safe enough. If it's still factory settings then I wouldn't let it anywhere near the update though.

  15. A few minutes ago yet another colleague is phoned by Microsoft to get his serial number (his Xbox 360 is unaffected by the update install).

Was that Xbox a factory settings one as well?
