  1. I did not understand Generation X at all. I liked Girlfriend In A Coma and have read it several times, but found All Families Are Psychotic pretty dull. Microserfs is still awaiting a read.
  2. Sunshine. Cillian Murphy getting swiped across the stomach with a scalpel set me off. Eyes fizzing and not working, light headed, skin tingling, cold sweat, felt sick and couldn't stand up once I'd made it to the toilets. For about five minutes I was an incredible mess. First time that ever happened. Wristcutters had the same effect, during the early bar scene where the two girls are talking about their game of trying to figure out how new arrivals have killed themselves. Same effect as above, but I sat through it this time. I can't have been completely conscious for most of the rest of the film because I don't really remember anything about it. From what the girl who saw it with me said that's no great loss, though. I've no idea why those two films had that effect - neither were particularly graphic and I've seen more violent/graphic stuff without any problems. *shrug*

I haven't been working for a few weeks, and the last two drawings I did were during similar breaks. Other than that it'd just be weekends, but if I get properly into it I'll think nothing of throwing entire days at it. But yes, I have lost the momentum rather.
  4. I just got finished reading Quite Ugly One Morning by Christopher Brookmyre, which I rather enjoyed. Brutal and witty. I read A Big Boy Did It And Ran Away years ago and had a good laugh too. I imagine Charlie Brooker would produce this sort of thing if he ever tried writing novels. Before that I attempted to read Cloud Atlas. Several times. Each time getting a shorter way in before snapping it shut in disgust. It is the first book I have actually hated, so I have my book group to thank for that. I swear to god, Moby Dick is like the fucking Da Vinci Code by comparison. I think I posted here ages ago that I was trying to read Quicksilver. I gave that up eventually as I was leaving too long between sittings for any of it to mean anything. I'm rather embarassed ~600 pages went by before I made that decision. I'm going to try again though, as I read a comment on The Confusion, summing it up as something like 'Stephenson saying "thankyou" for getting through Quicksilver.' I'm presently reading The Good Women Of China by Xinran, which I got by Amazon recommendation after getting An Artist Of The Floating World by Kazuo Ishiguro (not bad, not great). Very good so far.

I wish I had your work rate Lozzy, so I guess we're even. Progress has been rather slow of late; after being convinced for a while something was wrong with the proportions I decided his face was too wide, and brought the right side in slightly and adjusted the left ear. Looking at it in this form I'm still not sure it's quite right - I might have to bring the top of his head down a bit too. I've tentatively started on the darker shading, though it's not much in evidence yet. There is some 2B in there, honest.
  7. That's it - ta very much.
  8. Perhaps this would be better off in ATF, perhaps not. Anyway, the first bit of music heard in this clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SyIvONH14_Q If anyone could identify it I'd be much obliged.

The first pass is pretty much done now. The hair was extremely fiddly to get any kind of texture, and took much longer than I expected - like, at least two hours from one side to the other. I'm not too happy with it, to be honest. I think I've got the position of the left ear slightly wrong, so I need to leave it for a bit and see what my initial feeling is on coming back to it.

Yeah, that's the 'original'. As far as I know there aren't any larger versions.
  11. I think reading a lot definitely helps. I'm sure I've picked up stuff - at the very least improved my vocabulary - over the years by reading. There are sites where you can post stuff for peer review, like writing.com, everything2.com, or this folder. Your mileage may vary obviously (I think depending greatly on your attitude and reception to criticism), but I've been a user of everything2 for several years and I think my writing has improved dramatically in that time. Getting others to proof your work can definitely be useful, since you tend to zone out certain things when you've spend a lot of time on a piece. Certainly it's all but a requirement if you think your grammar isn't up to scratch yet. There may well be rules you're not aware of, or structural suggestions that may assist in future efforts. Feel free to PM if you want to discuss further.

Not that much over the last couple of days, but I'm about to dip in again. As I've just been saying to 28 here, I can feel myself being overly cautious with the shading. I think the overall tones should be much darker (and they will be once the soft pencils come out) but I'm still spending time on stupidly light rendering which is probably going to be plastered over later. Silly boy.

Thanks everyone, you're very kind. This is an improvement I think, after deciding not to cling quite so resolutely to the details of the source. I think in some places I've been drawing jpeg processing artefacts so I'm trying to allow a bit more interpretation into things. The shape of his left iris, for example, which is slightly odd in the source. A regular circle seems to be working. In the last update the left eye was also too large, which I've now fixed. There's a few areas that will need a bit of attention before going onto serious rendering, and all along I've had a mild suspicion his eyes might be slightly too far apart, but I'm trying not to worry about that too much. Onward...

Thanks very much. Here's the latest, which I'm not quite so wild about: Something's up with the left eye. Bah, grumble, gripe, etc.

    New drawing

Thanks everyone. It's still coming on nicely, and I'm really starting to love the extra capacity for detail that A3 affords. I'm at a slightly annoying point right now where I can't get a nice edge on the pencil, so subtle shading is very difficult. Anyway, meantime have an eye. I got a bit annoyed with some 'bitty' shading on the bridge of his nose so I'm starting again there, but I'm well pleased with what I've got on the right so far.

    New drawing

Had a moment of horror where I thought I'd done his whole face too long, then a large sigh of relief when I worked out I'd just done his chin slightly too long. Also, his nose was too narrow which is now pretty much fixed. I think it's starting to take shape quite nicely now, and has still only been shaded to HB level, though many areas haven't really been shaded at all yet. I haven't got over to the left side of the face yet. Soft pencils are going to make this look great and unlike the last one, I'm not going to have to spend the lion's share of the time doing hair.

    New drawing

Changes over the last few days have mostly been fiddly and highly incremental. It was suggested a scaling object might be appreciated so I've obliged there. I can see the shading around the eyes and nose are what's really going to make this, and there are still a number of bits I haven't even done initial shading on yet which I think/hope is the reason it looks slightly lopsided in places. Again though, quite happy with it considering the stage it's at. He might be looking slightly to our left but hopefully proper rendering of the eyes should fix it. It's getting the highlights on his beard right that intimidates me at the moment.

I was right I've been working on this quite a bit today, and here's the latest couple of stages: A lot more sketchy than my previous efforts, which I kinda like. In that IMO it looks quite like the guy already even though I haven't got a vast amount of detail in there yet. I used to delve into maximum detail straight away, which I only started to break out of with the last drawing. I imagine it shows in the "quality" of those initial sketches. Anyway, quite happy with it so far and looking forward to going further.

    New drawing

I've already started slacking somewhat, I see. Three months now since the last drawing. I'm hoping posting updates here will keep me going, as progress so far has been rather torpid. 2008's first customer is Idris Elba, as seen (I gather) in The Wire, getting shot in the face by Denzel Washington in American Gangster, and first seen by me in 98's Ultraviolet. Great face. Aand my version so far: It's still at the initial crap-sketch stage, with a few things contrived and me unable to see the link between this and whatever it ends up as, but that always happens. I've moved from A4 to A3 for this one, hoping I might be able to get some more detail in. I'm using lighter paper now too, since I started using soft pencils on the last drawing. When I first started I used lighter paper (~115gsm, as opposed to 224gsm for the previous one above) and have noticed I got much subtler rendering with it than the heavier stuff I've been using recently. The difficult thing I'm finding so far about A3 is judging scale; it's easy enough to use the pencil or whatever to check these things with A4, but it is usually too small for A3 so I'm having to use paper edges with markings on and stuff, and I'm not quite sure I've got the overall proportions right. Trying to avoid obsessive "slideshowing" over little details this time
  20. Shit, I forgot about that. Drive is season six.
  21. I want him to go all vigilante on his son, the little shit.
  22. No Man's Land - good little film set during the Bosnia/Serbia conflict about two soldiers - one from either side - pinned down in a trench between two opposing encampments. Nicely highlights some absurdities of war and How Similar Everyone Is In The End, etc.
  23. Well yes, fair enough that he's a fucking nutter, but it really makes no difference whether 'he' is really him or 'just' a clone. If they were any different they wouldn't be clones.
  24. It doesn't really make any difference though, does it?
