  1. This Is Going To Hurt (BBC, 2022) - 5/5 I was engrossed in the Adam Kay book, reading it in just over a day and laughing out loud repeatedly. The TV series had me laughing, crying and nodding in recognition (at how broken the NHS is). Brilliantly written and acted, powerful stuff.
  2. In Gothik you are trying to find the bones of Hasrinaax, the player character from Druid/Druid II: Enlightenment. The original Druid was then remade/reworked as Warlock: The Avenger. As for samples, it’s down to the sample rate and playback routine. There are some amazing demos using more complex techniques, but this one in Gothik definitely sounds like an 8-bit sample where many are 4-bit.
  3. Not true. Managers asked the ref to call it off, but ref (wrongly) claimed it was past 75 minutes and the 1-1 score line at that point would stand.
  4. It’s six pages on the later HUGE development system (although it does mention some of the earlier games in a boxout)

  6. Loved the first two episodes of Australia series 4. Cool to discover on Wikipedia it’s been shown/showing in 14 countries.
  7. Lester (C64) - excellent new Metroidvania style game, managed to complete it
  8. Same here. Roger gave me my first regular writing job on Commodore Force, and in recent years I worked with him on books, Annuals and the revived ZZAP. I was also lucky enough to meet him and Oli at retro events. Roger was a genuinely wonderful person that I will miss deeply.
  9. Superb as ever. Mind you, I did laugh when they mentioned the street in Halifax where my friends used to live.
  10. Thanks boss, that’s what I wanted to do - live up to what Jason did with the column, covering a wide range of machines and competitions/jams.
  11. I have the Lotus history book published just after Colin Chapman’s death. It is one of a small number signed by Ayrton Senna.
  12. Loved this year’s UK Christmas Special. In two minds about starting the US version.
  13. Got my email from Funstock today, there will be another email to those who missed out on the Limited Edition in the New Year to add their name to the Heroes list.
  14. I loved meeting and talking to Archer at retro events over the past twenty years, and had the pleasure of interviewing a few times either on his own or as part of a panel. A genuinely nice guy and an incredibly talented programmer.
  15. I love being part of Retro Gamer, and it is a real privilege to be writing the regular homebrew column.
  16. Well, I loved it. It’s all about the foreshadowing.
  17. Homebrew Extras for you at my (unofficial) site: https://andrewrfisher.wixsite.com/retro-gamer-homebrew/post/homebrew-extra-retro-gamer-241
  18. Homebrew - Robocop is returning to Amiga (a new AGA version) and arriving on Mega Drive, the Champion Coder is Alastair Low (Flea, Tapeworm Disco Puzzle) and there’s a preview of Terrestrial on C64 (released this week). Plus a review of Devil’s Temple - Return of the Kung Fu Master on Amiga...
  19. 55, but yeah, incredible work from England to get the win clearly in their sights.
  20. Best refereeing performance of the tournament. Incredible match all round.
  21. Terramex is one of those best played with a map/solution to hand. I did like the fact there were different things to do for different characters, and it got a decent Archimedes port.
  22. Foakes back and young spinner Reham in. Will be interesting to see if we can get that third win. (Rawalpindi pitch for the First Test rated “inadequate” by the ICC assessor - for not offering help to the bowlers. Makes it even more impressive we took 20 wickets on it.)
  23. Impact reviewed badly, but it’s not that bad. Yes, there are better games on the C64 in that genre but it is fun to pick up and play for a few minutes - or even design a few screens.
