  1. Finally finished it. Beats Astrobot to become my new no1 VR game.

    When people ponder if this game would work without VR they often mention the loss of the immersion. It’s a huge part of this but I think what is undersold about this game (and VR in general) are the intuitiveness of ‘touch’ controls. I’ll try and explain one of my biggest  ‘wow’ moments, it’s incredibly mundane but I think it’s important.

    So I’m about to open a door but I have a grenade in one hand and gun in another. My ‘wrist pocket’ was full so I couldn’t put the grenade in there. I needed my hand holding the grenade to open the door. I was about to just throw it on the floor but there was an electric box panel right next to the door. So I place the grenade on top of the box panel, open the door and then grab the grenade back again

    This wasn’t a feature or a mechanic, it was just me making creative use of the scenery. If this wasn’t a VR game you’d just be switching item wheel slots or inventory or a binary drop/pickup.

    Anyway, I could talk about a hundred much more exciting moments I had in this game but felt the need to explain something a bit more mundane. I don’t think I had really played a VR game properly since Astrobot about a year ago, Alyx has got me excited about VR again. I just hope AAA studios continue to risk making VR games with this much polish and passion.

    @Capwn Regarding Jeff...

    Did you find the gas/face mask you can wear that lets you breathe though Jeff's fumes?

    Oh! No I was using the initial method all the way through :(

    VR has come a long way since my first VR kit (Oculus DK 2) where I played many horrendous unofficial 'indie' demos that would really make me ill. Including a fairground ride that span you round and round over this city. That was my first and real head messing moment, I tried to keep going, just out of curiosity and when it stopped I was absolutely fucked. Would even 'remember' the feeling for weeks afterwards where even the memory brought back a mild queasiness.

  3. There are some insane next level optimizations going on here. There ARE other VR games with graphics as polished and high end as this but they don't run very well and get quite uncomfortable quickly. I've noticed that if you look directly down, depending on how your headset is placed you can see effects like shadows vanishing. There is a very fancy level of detail system based on reducing lighting/shadows/polycount on objects outside of your vision. I'm sure that's just a small fraction of the clever tech they have here to be able to have such a large game that is so polished and can be played on for over a hour with no sickness at all. I think my longest session is 2 hours. In the past I think about 30mins was my usual limit before feeling at the very least 'VR fatigued'. Not sick (I'm finding that's less common these days) but just a sense of some kind of energy fatigue.

  4. Just finished chapter JEFF, I'm a broken shell of a human after that.

    I'm not usually ever scared in games but that was unsettling, I think it's the crippling feeling of having to keep using your hand to cover your mouth. That initial bit where you realize you have to lock him in the room, you finally do it and then that moment you realize 'Oh, I have to let him out again to connect these wall wires' :( and then it just keeps playing with you, throwing you into all sorts of horrible scenarios where you have to make noise. Even the collectibles are set up in such a way that they create noise. It just keeps ramping up. The satisfaction of getting out.

    I'm holding out before giving my full impressions of this game but it's full of continuous memories, memories that I think stick more because VR somehow makes them more memorable. These little moments where you really believed you were in a certain moment within this world.

  6. Can anyone spoiler how long this this? Just started chapter 6.

    I can't believe what they have achieved here. I was kinda expecting a Batman VR type 2-3 hr experience where you go through some atmospheric areas, do some puzzles with a set pieces with enemies. Perhaps a separate shooting range kind of mode added on. Nope, this is a full-on proper game. It's insane that this kinda came out of nowhere.

  7. Fan of the comic, I found my gf started watching this so I tagged along. I quite enjoyed it for the first few episodes and then just kept watching out of curiosity, minus the one or two decent episodes it gets worse and worse. Really misses the edge of the comic and changes far too much. Some really strange choices too, like for the Bode ghost they fully rebuild him in full CG detail and it looks awful. All they had to do is have a ghostly silhouette.

  8. Yeah no interest in this PPV at all;

    100 points

    No Disqualification Match

    2. How many eliminations does Shayna Baszler score? (50 points) 5

    3. Will we get an Undertaker appearance? (50 points) Yes

  9. The problem with making this all 3D is that they suddenly have to create side streets/areas, so you end up with super bland areas with the same crates/set dressing everywhere. Not sure it matters, it's just a shame because the original felt so polished as they didn't need to do much to fill out these areas due to a locked camera. I'm sure they could have made these areas look more appealing but that would have added another 5-10 years of development. It's certainly a good compromise that had to happen.

  10. So a few days passed after watching the last episode and my GF was like "I think I'm done with the show. I can't watch anymore." and we continued to have a heartfelt discussion. I've tried quitting before but was sucked in again when something mildly interesting happened at the end of a season. I'm going to try giving this up again, I don't NEED this in my life. It's going to be a hard road and I don't know what the future holds, will I keep coming into this thread just out of curiosity? Will I get sucked in by a 'OMG!' article? I also feel a bit sad because I've desperately wanted Gabrielle to die for about 5 seasons and now I may be facing a sad future where I find out he dies on a news article or tweet, missing out on the glory watching him die in 'real-time'.

    I hope you all have my back on this and understand, hope that with your support I can walk away from this show. I'll let you all know how it goes.

    I love you all.

  11. Read a couple of articles last week saying the first couple of episodes of this latest batch are the most amazing episodes ever.

    Nope, it's still shit. Honestly, this happens before the start of EVERY Walking Dead series. Bunch of daft journalists get some early copies and are like 'OMG IT'S BACK ON FORM!'

  12. I actually had no idea what was going on and didn't understand why it just suddenly stopped. Regarding the spoiler above, did what? I think I missed the point that something major happened? It had my full attention too, I wasn't half watching.

  13. Are young kids actually seeking to see this with little knowledge of Sonic's history? or is it mostly parents being like "Look, lets go see Sonic this weekend. Then we don't have to go and watch that Peter F******g Rabbit 2. At least with Sonic it's a character I grew up with and understand"

    or something?

    Lagavulin 16 is an interesting one. Top tier, absolutely; affordable ... its £50 a pop most of the time,

    Oh man, that sounds cheap to me. It's $159.99 here which is about 92 quid.
