1. (Post from April 2019) So there was a post about this in the PS4 thread, but this is absolutely massive news so it definitely needs its own thread! Mark Cerny has talked to WIRED about Sony's next gen machine, leading to some fascinating details and discussion points. https://www.wired.com/story/exclusive-sony-next-gen-console/ A few headlines: - Revolution not evolution. - Will have a solid state drive with bandwidth faster than any SSD in any current PC. - The SSD will transform how quickly data can be streamed and will improve load times massively from current titles. - The PS5 will support 8K. - Will also support current PSVR, a future version of which is heavily implied but not yet being revealed. - Supports ray tracing, which seems to be a big focus of new graphics and (intriguingly) audio. - Jump in audio quality will 'redefine what sound can do in a videogame'. Much bigger than the leap from PS3 to PS4, and is a focus of the machine. Hardware resources being thrown at audio. - Backwards compatible with PS4 software. - Not out this year (2019). SSD bit: UPDATE 08/10/19. Even more details revealed in another WIRED exclusive here: https://www.wired.com/story/exclusive-playstation-5/ - Ray tracing hardware acceleration in GPU, not software based. - Controller has haptic feedback and ‘adaptive triggers‘ to enhance immersion way beyond rumble. - SSD could make load times similar to cartridge gaming. - Console officially called PlayStation 5 and will be released in Holiday 2020. (Discussion of new details starts on page 22.) UPDATE 12/06/20. PS5 revealed at Sony streamed event on 11 June. A whole bunch of games announced, including: - Spider-Man Miles Morales, seemingly a standalone semi-sequel to Insomniac’s Spider-Man, in the vein of Uncharted Lost Legacy. Out in holiday 2020 - Horizon: Zero West, very pretty sequel to HZD. No release date yet. - Gran Turismo 7, no release date yet - Resident Evil VIII (VIIIage), released in 2021 - Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart - Astro Bot Playroom, pre-loaded onto every PlayStation 5 as a fun game and introduction to the system. (Also should serve to get more people into the series so that Astro Bot 2 blows even more tits off when it’s released on PSVR2 launch day, right?) - Deathloop, cool-looking FPS from Arkane. Also, the PS5 itself was shown for the first time. It’s massive, and bears more than a passing resemblance to a Netgear router. Estimated size comparison to other consoles: The event received a mixed reception. I personally liked it a lot. Update 16/09/20 after PS5 Showcase info: PS5 launch date in UK: 19/11/20 PlayStation 5 (with disc drive) launch price: £449.99 PlayStation 5 digital edition (no disc drive) launch price: £359.99 Controversially, some launch software has been priced at £69.99. Sackboy A Big Adventure: £59.99 Astro Bot Playroom (free, pre-loaded onto console) Ouch! But... PlayStation Plus free games November/December 2020: Bugsnax (PS5 version only) January/February 2021: Destruction AllStars Accessories: DualSense wireless controller: £59.99. Pulse 3D wireless headset costs £89.99. PS5 HD camera: £49.99 Media remote: £24.99. DualSense charging station (charges two DualSense wireless controllers): £24.99. 2. https://wiredproductions.com/games/arcade-paradise/ It's pretty criminal that I couldn't find a dedicated thread for this bloody good game! It's developed by Nosebleed Interactive, the people behind 2017's Vostok Inc, and published by Wired Productions. Left by your father to work a dead-end summer job looking after the launderette he owns while he's away, you find a small arcade in the back with 3 old games in it. Soon you hit upon the idea to start building up a bigger collection by using the money made from the washing machines and the arcade. Before long, it's clear (to you, anyway) that the arcade could be much more successful than the launderette if some time and effort is put into it, and your dreams of running your own business start to bear fruit. But with your father having no interest in arcade games, he's only prepared to listen to ideas about expanding the launderette. How will he react when he finds out that you're doing the opposite of what he says? The best thing about Arcade Paradise is that it's really bloody generous - there are over 35 arcade machines to buy to fit out your arcade, which are all playable cabinets, and various new game mechanics and tasks are fed in as you go. While the first 2 or 3 hours are fairly slow going as you have to balance the laundry with the arcade to make money, soon you can ignore the launderette entirely and concentrate entirely on the fun stuff (aside from picking up rubbish and throwing it in the big bin outside, obviously! Oh, and removing chewing gum. And unblocking the toilet). All the arcade games have been specially created for Arcade Paradise - not all of them are great but many are surprisingly compelling, and each has a set of goals to achieve through play which increases their popularity and therefore the money you earn from them, giving you more incentive to play. There's a very modest management sim element here too, but that isn't particularly in-depth. Most of your time will be spent playing the arcade games themselves. With clones of the likes of Drop 7, Pong, Arkanoid, Dance Dance Revolution, Missile Command and tons more, with some brilliant music, recurring characters and also some cool in-game radio ambience, there's always something to do, and the story bubbling along underneath is pretty fun. Anyway, do give it a go if it sounds good. It's only £15.99 on Switch, which is my preferred way to play as the game is perfect for handheld. It has a gameplay loop that's super-addictive, and it's often been a real struggle to drag myself away from my now-bustling arcade. Great concept, great game.
3. Just announced on the DC Fandome event: Edit: Youtube versions:
4. Pre-install available now.
5. NOTE: Please see the below thread for dedicated discussion of Persona 5 Scramble; hopefully my thread can be the home of vanilla and Royal chat! Free legacy DLC for P5R: https://store.playstation.com/en-gb/product/EP0177-CUSA17419_00-P5RDLCBUNDLE0001 - once it's downloaded, check the cardboard box in your room to unlock it. Also, you may need to restart the game before it recognises the content. New semester conditions (and related advice) for P5R: General tips and notes from the forum: (This section is something that was suggested on October 18th 2022, shortly before Royal's release on PC and Nintendo/MS consoles.) UPDATED OP: This is now an OP about Persona 5 Royal. Like P4 Golden and P3 FES, this new game is intended to be a sort of "deluxe" update to 2017's Persona 5, with new events, a new "Phantom Thief" character named Kasumi, a customisable personal palace (named "My Palace") and other bits and pieces. Previously we found out that it would be released in the west around "Spring 2020", but on December 3rd 2019 we found out that the game would be released on March 31st 2020. Additionally, there will be the opportunity to place a digital pre-order and get an original P5R theme. P5R owners will also get original P5 DLC for free, and there are a few different editions of the game to look out for - the Phantom Thieves Edition (includes a Joker mask with stand, art book, physical disc and steelbook, soundtrack, dynamic PS4 theme), the Launch Edition (physical disc, steelbook, dynamic PS4 theme code), the Ultimate Edition (digital download, DLC bundles, bonus costume packs), and the Deluxe Edition (digital download, Kasumi costume pack.) Those DLC bundles will be available as separate purchases too; there's a Kasumi costume pack, a "battle bundle", a "persona bundle", and a "DLC bundle". I had mixed feelings about the original version of Persona 5 - in terms of content and presentation it was one of the most polished games in the series so far, but the more ambitious sequences that formed large portions of gameplay in the palaces sometimes threatened to overstay their welcome. So I'm kind of hoping that Royal comes with dungeon design that's perhaps a little bit tighter... but even if P5 wasn't my favourite game in the series, it's still a pretty good RPG in its own right and I look forward to having another excuse to revisit the world of the Phantom Thieves... http://www.atlus.com/persona5/ If you're wondering what a Persona is, I've provided a little primer below:

As a massive martial art movie fan I'm quite interested to see how this turns out.
7. https://balanwonderworld.square-enix-games.com/en-gb/main/ This video includes their introduction with English subtitles, as well as the trailer: Edit: Here's the longer version, from the official site And the trailer alone: Looks like a very traditional platformer, with character design that fortunately looks a lot more NiGHTS than Blinx. In particular, those bosses look extremely NiGHTS-y - not just their character designs, but also their attacks (spike balls and flames) remind me of some of the hazards in that game's final boss fight. And that voiceover is earnestly cheesy in exactly the same way as the narration in Christmas NiGHTS... "Cephalopainter" - is that a Splatoon reference? And a few seconds later at 1:10 there's a familiar-looking blue runner! Did I mention that it's all very reminiscent of the 1996 Sega Saturn game NiGHTS Into Dreams?

Ghost Song

Just a few more minutes and Ghost Song will finally be released! This one's been in development from before Hollow Knight was even a game jam entry, so yeah, the wait has been long! Gonna dive into this over the weekend. Anyone else keeping an eye on this metroidvania?
9. About time the PS5's most promising game gets its own thread. So what is Returnal? If you'd throw Housemarqe's arcade heritage, roguelikes, Tom Cruise's Edge of Tomorrow/Live Die Repeat, Bloodborne and a pinch of P.T. in a blender, you'd get Returnal. For an overview: https://www.playstation.com/en-gb/games/returnal/ Reveal trailer: Then there is this Game Awards trailer: And there is my favourite trailer, the recently released gameplay trailer that is an onslaught of particles, neon coloured bullets, massive tentacled creatures, sci-fi mystery and cool music. Watch in 4K and with good sound: More info on the PS Blog: https://blog.playstation.com/2020/12/10/returnal-launches-on-ps5-march-19-2021/ I have high hopes for this and that's also based on things I can't talk about.
10. Can't decide whether to get the PS4 or Switch version! Also is there a tutorial video that is worth watching? Never really figured out how to play it properly! Thanks!

12. A lot there very reminiscent of FF14, the medieval artstyle, mentions of the Mothercrystal, calling summons Eikons, and so on that I thought it was related or another MMO for a minute. No release date though, there's typically been a really long time between reveal and release for FF, with none coming in at under uh, four years, so let's hope this thread isn't still going in 2024.
13. After strange disappearances hit Tokyo’s population, it’s up to you to uncover the source and purge the city of a strange, new evil. Armed with your own mysterious abilities, you will face down the occult, unravel conspiracy theories and experience urban legends like never before. Don’t fear the unknown. Attack it. Ghostwire: Tokyo is an action-adventure video game played from a first-person perspective. The player can use various psychic and paranormal abilities to defeat the ghosts and spirits haunting Tokyo. Combat director Shinichiro Hara described the combat as "karate meets magic", as the player character utilizes hand movements inspired by Kuji-kiri hand gestures to cast spells. When an enemy loses most of their health, its core is exposed and the player can use takedown moves to destroy it, killing the spirit. GhostWire: Tokyo is the newest title by Tango Gameworks, the developer behind The Evil Within. The game was first revealed during Bethesda’s 2019 E3 press conference. Tango Gameworks is known for its work in the horror game genre and while this game definitely seems to have some spooky vibes, Tango notes that this is more of an action-adventure game. Official reveal trailer: Latest trailer: Announced exclusively for PS5 for March 2022.

15. New Royal players! We have a dedicated thread for P5 and Royal below! Original post text is below: https://p-ch.jp/remaster/portal/ Holy shit. PC! I can throw out these other consoles at last! (provided the required specs are okay, and the ports are decent) Would have loved the P2s as well but they're not the easiest things to get on with. P5R will be the first one to be released, on October 21. Next year, on January 19, the other games will also be released. The remaster portal also has some fine print about distribution: P3P and P4G will be digital downloads only; P5R will be a digital download for Xbox and PC, so presumably it will be available as a physical release on PS5 and Switch. Furthermore, there are no plans for any kind of free PS4->PS5 upgrade if you already have Royal on PS4. My immediate reaction on Twitter: More details when I have time, or something Original game threads: P3 | P4(G) | P5

Disco Elysium

So Disco Elysium has finally got a release date. Isometric urban fantasy/new weird detective RPG. OCTOBER 15TH!!! Devs are saying it'll be 60+ hours of sprawling isometric role playing goodness. I won't lie to you, I'm pretty excited by this. There's been an absolute deluge of isometric RPGs these last few years but this one looks pretty original.
18. Looks pretty decent. It kinda looks like it's set in Canada based on the pre rendered video?
19. Apparently no topic yet (unless search is failing once more), but there's a demo for this on the PlayStation Store: https://store.playstation.com/en-uk/concept/10004428/ A prequel to the original Valkyrie Profile, this - in my mind - seems to pull an Automata: what if we took a dormant IP and approached it from a different action-RPG angle? Although in this case, that means getting rid of all the turn-based RPG battles. Playing through the demo, I do feel this very comfortably snapping into the Automata-shaped hole that Replicant couldn't fill. It's been ages since I've touched Profile, so I'm also not as uncomfortable with the changes. One thing I kind of dislike is that it does use Square Enix' "Stagger Battle System" again. Still it plays well, even if it's a bit mindless. Will have this on the playlist before long. Any other impressions?
20. Seems like Team Ninja just can't get enough of samurai masocore games. After Ni-Oh and Ni-Oh 2 comes their latest effort Rise Of The Ronin. Introducing Rise of the Ronin, a combat focused open-world action RPG that takes place in Japan at a time of great change. It is the very end of a 300-year long Edo Period, commonly known as “Bakumatsu”. Set in the late 19th century, Japan is facing the darkest of times as it struggles with its oppressive rulers and deadly diseases while western influence permeates as civil war continues to rage between the Tokugawa Shogunate and the anti-Shogunate factions. Here in this time of mayhem, you embody a ronin character, a warrior bound to no master and free to make choices of its own. Rise of the Ronin is a new Team Ninja experience that will immerse you in an historically inspired world while bringing together its renowned combat action with katanas and the likes, with new firearm weaponry that depicts the unique personality of its time period. Apparently this project first began to take form back in 2015. And since then, the development has progressed slowly and freely - much like the spirit of a true ronin - and is now set for release in 2024. Debut trailer: Game of the show for me. Releasing some time in 2024.
21. Capcom a few months ago announced Exoprimal. Dinosaurs are falling from the sky and only you can save humanity or something. From the brief video below it looks a bit like EDF but with dinosaurs. Looks promising. Due out next year.
22. What with the Nintendo Direct also happening, I guess the real E3 starts tomorrow
