October Cd Mix Club

Scribble, here's my feedback, finally:

Track 1- Nice start, kind of reminds me of early Warp, Artificial Intelligence era. Then it commences periodic spazouts like Godspeed at 78rpm with drill & bass backing ad the occasional glitch riff. Nothing wrong with any of that, though I prefer the electronic parts to the guitar myself. Kind of like a rockier Squarepusher at times. Good start.

Track 2 - Heavy MP3 artefacts on this one which I don't think are intentional... KMFDMish industrial stuff, I used to be pretty into this but I don't listen to it much nowadays... it's a young man's game. Nothing against it, but - and Christ, this does sound old - it sounds quite generic to me.

Track 3 - Primus and Tom Waits, yeah? More thumbs up than I can physically manage.

Track 4 - Godfather start... and there's the breakcore again. Then it goes eccentric, then it goes super bombastic, then it settles down. And it's a short track! Good fun.

Track 5 - Nice start, builds up in a post-rock fashion, then goes a little Radioheady... the web suggests this is Anathema. It's not the kind of thing I'd normally listen to, but I didn't mind it at all (as someone's already said, this is what the CD club is all about) - preferred the first two thirds to the final section.

Track 6 - Anathema again! And Radioheadesque again to my untrained ears. The vocoded vocals seem a little clichéd, but it doesn't annoy me. As with the last track, I prefer its quieter moments to its louder ones. The age thing again, I'd imagine, though I did crank up the Primus. That sounds obscene, doesn't it?

Track 7 - Another call to Inspector Google suggests this is Porcupine Tree. It's listenable, but not really my cup of tea. I seem to recall Porcupine Tree always being in the ambient / electronica section of the local indie shop back in the mid-90s... did they have a makeover?

Track 8 - Great start to this one, especially the first ten seconds or so. Elbow, yeah? Never heard them before, and again it's more guitar-driven than my usual listening material. But it's okay, I like it - though it reminds me of something I can't quite put my finger on, especially at the end, which is annoying. But that's hardly the track's fault...

Track 9 - A more relaxed direction, and I really like this. Thievery Corporation? New to me, but I'm going to remember the name.

Track 10 - Our survey says Isis. I like this, too. It's hard to predict - plenty of information in there. Some excellent dub moments before the vocals come in.

Track 11 - A Silver Mt. Zion? I've always meant to check them out but never got round to it. I love Godspeed, and ASMZ often come up when they're mentioned. Yeah, I like this, excellent building, driving, epic stuff. Great finish.

So then, so then... a success, I'd say. With the Primus in place you'd already secured a B minimum. The Zion, Thievery and Isis raise it to an A, and there's nothing to subtract any points for, really. So cheers!

I'll endevour to write some down today.

No the most indepth comments as Ive not had a decent amount of time to listen to this (my mp3 and minidisk players both broke this week and I listen to music more on the move than anyother time)

1:

Really like this one, I like the way it starts out quite chilled, kicks in to a more upbeat style and then slows right back down..

2:

Cheesy 80's synths, fits in well between 1 and three

3:

SHOUT! Great track

4:

another one I liked, especialy the fast part of the vocal.

5:

Not a big fan of this one but it fits in well with the other tracks

6:

Don't like this at all

7:

Quite slow but pleasing to the ear, im sure I recognise the vocal.

8:

This is the best track on the cd for me

9:

I like this one too.. again sounds familiar

10:

Enjoyed this one, the change of pace half way through works well

11:

Is the intro from Sonic?! This is a nice track, simple guitar riff, quite pleasant.

12 - 15

Didnt really like the last few tracks.

Sorry I couldnt write more.

Tracklisting?

Tracklisting?

Haha! More positive than I thought, wasn't sure you'd like the style. Shame you didn't like the last few tracks though.

Tracklisting:

1. The Creepers - Baby's On Fire

2. John Carpenter - The End

3. Tears for Fears - Shout (US Version)

4. Yello - Bostich

5. Easy Going - Fear

6. Bobby 'O' - I'm So Hot For You

[didn't think you'd like that, but his stuff is always remixed into things by 2 Many DJs etc, just thought it was interesting to hear a song in its original form]

7. Thomas Dolby - One Of Our Submarines (Salz Mix)

8. Kraftwerk - Showroom Dummies

9. The Passions - I'm In Love With A German Filmstar (Long Version)

[this has been on a lot of 80s compilations recently so you might have heard it on those]

10. Giorgio Moroder / Skatt Bros - Evolution / Walk The Night

[i put this together, the tracks weave in and out of each other a bit. Giordio Moroder's goes all the way through and the Skatt Bros track is all the vocals and some of the guitars. I also dropped Tiga's 'Burning Down' into it for a laugh].

11. Gang of Four - At Home He's A Tourist

[No sonic... sorry!]

12. Softcell - Memorabillia (Kill The DJ Edit)

13. The Kills - No Wow

[Think this has been remixed by Ivan Smaaghe, off his Fabric mix album]

14. The Cramps - New Kind of Kick

15. Depeche Mode - Never Let Me Down Again

[shame you don't like this, I think it is a lush end to the album...]

So there you go. Fairly heavily inspired by the mixes of Ivan Smaaghe, The Glimmers and Felix Da Housecat.

:)

Glad you liked it.. here's exactly what was on there (though you got most of them).

01. 65daysofstatic - The Fall Of Math - 3:59

02. Deftones - My Own Summer (Remix) - 4:21 (sorry about the quality.. it was on a very old CD-R my friend made for me)

03. Primus - Tommy The Cat - 4:15

04. Fantômas - The Godfather - 2:47

05. Anathema - Balance - 3:58

06. Anathema - Closer - 6:20

07. Porcupine Tree - Trains - 5:32

08. Elbow - Leaders of the Free World - 6:11

09. Thievery Corporation - Marching the Hate Machines (Into the Sun) (feat. The Flaming Lips) - 4:01

10. Isis - The Beginning and the End (feat. Venetian Snares) - 5:05

11. A Silver Mt. Zion - American Motor Over Smothered Field... - 12:05

Porcupine Tree make themselves over all the time.. their latest album is a bit metal.. this track's a bit indie.. they did a dance thing in the mid-nineties.. they were psychidelic for a while. The great thing about them though, is that with each change in sound they bring a bit of what they were doing along.

The Fantomas Godfather cover was from an album they did of re-made film music.. really cool stuff.

The Theivery Corporation track also has the flaming lips on it.. and the Isis song is a Venetian Snares remix.

Comments for superstarbeejay:

It's a really nice CD, overall - not the kind of stuff I usually listen to (for the most part) but nice and chilled out. I can't say any of the tracks really stood out, but I enjoy them all and they seem to work well as a CD.

Well, with one exception. Track 9 (energetic and with an annoying robot voice) is completely out of place, and comes as a big jump especially after track 8 is so relaxed.

Also the Radiohead and RHCP stuff - this is a general question, really - surely there's no-one on this forum who hasn't heard those tracks before? What do people think about putting tracks like that in mixes? It seems a bit pointless to me, but then I wouldn't want the mix club to turn into a 'who's the most obscure' competition.

Cheers for that, glad you enjoyed it.

Firstly, track 9 was a little out of place but maybe that I'll be explained below. I'm listening to it now and it is well out of place.

Basically, I've been going through my back catalogue randomly and adding it to my library as well as the new stuff I'm buying.

The 17 tracks chosen were pretty much on the basis of my favorite stuff converted in the last month. Hence Radiohead, Mercury rev, RHCPs, Gomez etc.

I considered removing the Radiohead stuff for the reasons you state above but decided against it as I wanted to keep it on the basis of stuff that I love regardless. Just because everyone has heard Street Spirit a hundred times doesn't stop it being a great track and deserving of a place on the cd.

Personally I haven't listened to the bends for some time so it was a bit of a revival for me.

Track 9 got on the cd because I heard it on a Felix the housecat mix album and thought it was great and didn't want to remove it for the reasons above. It just so happens that it turned out to be the only real dance track on the album this month. Listening back though it really should have gone.

On the "most obscure" competition thing: I'll keep putting the music that made the month for me on my cd's. If that means that one month it's purely pet sounds then that's what it will be. Most likely it will continue to be a mix of new/obscure and old/common.

Oh man I'm confused.  2 cds today from Ormskirk, labelled 'October' and 'November'.  From you Alan?

Aye! The November CD is a bonus, as i've done the first CD for my November CD Mix Club entry already. Let me know what you think, and if you want to know what specific tracks are/the full tracklist (October CD only please, as the November one is going out to someone soon!)

Ant73, got what I presume is your CD today (had nothing written on it, but the jiffy bag was open, maybe the postman stole something?!)...

So far, so good... Listened to most of it (I've got to about track 11, don't know how many there are) and it is very enjoyable. Will post full comments soon(ish).

Cool - there wasnt anything written on it as it was all done in a rush. Last month was a bastard (got burgled, PC is dying, as is one of our cats, hellish work) so I'm afraid I didnt get a chance to do very much. I'll put up a tracklisting from home assuming my PC lets me.

Okay Ant73, feedback time (sorry about the delay):

1.???

Tried to work out who this is, it should be easy given the intro, but I can't get it! Anyway, a nice soul piece.

2. Be Thankful For What You've Got - ???

Love this, William DeVaughn does a nice version and the Massive Attack one is also alright, but I think this might be best (not sure which is the orignal though... Obviously not Massive Attack). Really, really like it.

3. ???

Nice soul work out. Enjoyed driving in my car to this one!

4. ???

Very funky and I recognise it but don't know what it is... Is it always an instrumental? Sounds like it could be James Brown but I'm clueless.

5. ???

This has been sampled by something I'm sure what which is annoying... Nice though.

6. Call My Name - Charlotte Church

I new I recognised this but couldn't think what it was until my girlfriend told me. Anyway, I hate Charlotte just because of who she is, but I have to say this is quite catchy. It also has a very subtle bit about 1:25 in that sounds like Silver Screen Shower Scene by Felix Da Housecat.

7. ???

I know this, but can't think who it is. Good Motown-esque stuff.

8. ???

Doing badly working out the artists! I know this, normally it has vocals though and I can actually hear them in my head, but I still don't know what it is. Lovely piano and drums. Very summery, much like the rest of the album.

9. ???

A bit of a switch in styles, 60s pop stuff. Still summery and pretty enjoyable.

10. ???

Another one I know but I'm not sure what it is or how I know it... Good though.

11. ???

A funky track, no idea what it is.Quite like it, but not as memorable as most of this... Probably a grower.

12. ???

This is cool, a lot of this actually sounds like the sort of thing David Holmes (whom I love) would DJ with actually. Nice minimal drums.

13. ???

Funky track about having a party. This made me laugh as I was pulling up into the carpark at work. Good stuff.

14. ???

Love the brass. Freeform funk/jazz piece. No idead what it is, but it's good.

15. ???

Love this, very funny and the guy's voice is cool. Interested to know how recent this is, it's obviously deliberately trying to sound old.

Anyway, overall very good, mostly works nicely together as a whole and is a great summer album that I would definetly stick on with a barbecue. Now, who did it all?!

  • 2 weeks later...

Wopish! Got Holly's 'Songs I Like To Sing To' today (went to my old flat, or, well, didn't as it wasn't there, thanks for the resend!).

Very good initial impressions, great songs though I wouldn't have had them in the order. A bit disjointed with the electro then backness.

Tracklising please!

Tracklising please!

Here you go:

Join My Stream - Popsicle

Too Young - Phoenix

When I Grow Up - Garbage

Close Your Eyes - Chemical Brothers

Mood Swing - Luscious Jackson

Cannot Contain This - Moloko

Down To Earth - Grace

Dream Attack - New Order

The Golden Path - Chemical Brothers

Wild Horses - The Sundays

Wasted - Mazzy Star

Histrionics - Popsicle

With Arms Outstretched - Rilo Kiley

As I said last month, it was a pretty random selection on my part, and I didn't quite think about the order properly, but I'm glad you like the tunes :) Will be interested to hear which stuff you're keener on.
