Microsoft still working on global distribution strategy for next-gen console

Microsoft vice president Peter Moore has conceded that organising a global launch for the Xbox 360 is proving to be a huge challenge, admitting: "If we knew what we were getting into, we might not have done it."

The Xbox 360 is due to launch in the US on November 22, with a European launch to follow on December 2 and a Japanese launch set for December 10. It will mark the first time that a console has launched in all three territories within a matter of weeks.

Speaking to the BBC, Moore said: "There's a reason no one has done this before and we are figuring that out."

"We're going to ship all around the world; how we're going to do that, I don't know. We're going to rent every 747 we can find," he added.

Moore went on to echo comments made by fellow Xbox exec J Allard regarding possible delays to software release dates if games aren't up to scratch.

"Games will arrive with a thousand bugs and get into the certification process," Moore said.

"They make it or they don't. It's no big deal if a game takes another week. The consumer will get a strong line-up."

Microsoft has yet to officially confirm a launch day software line-up, preferring to refer to the "launch window". Allard has previously stated that the company is hoping to get all three first party launch titles - Project Gotham Racing 3, Perfect Dark Zero and Kameo - into the shops "on day one." He admitted that there are no guarantees, however.

where do we all stand? does anyone have any information? have any of the major chains been allocated their stock yet? does anyone still care?

I ordered mine on the 18th of August from Play, whcih I now conceed was a bad idea. They are going to be chocka block with orders.

I had the same worry as you mate (also ordered from Play) but having just chatted to 'em, they say the earlier pre-orders will get priority over recent ones. I think you'll be fine if you ordered it way back then.

Just hope the games are bug-free and not rushed out.

That's good news. I ordered mine on the 26th of August from Play, so maybe I'll be ok too then- that was in the first few weeks they had it for preorder.

Though didn't some of you get a phonecall from play to confirm? I didn't.

I just checked my order status with GAME and it says "Your order has been received and is currently awaiting authorisation or release." Are they talking about the order they received from me or the goods that I ordered? Anyone know what Game normally put?

I made a half-hearted attempt to pre-order from the local indie about a month ago (after hearing there were no more guarenteed pre-orders left in GAME etc) . He had no idea if he was getting any at all, so didn't even want a deposit. I am not optamistic.

I suppose my best chance for day one is drive around places like ASDA or Sainsburys. I'm pretty sure they will have some. I've (in the same old fwappage vein) always pre-ordered stuff well in advance.... and there have always, without exception been a huge amount available. Its sometimes just the software that runs short.

I'm pretty sure God will prove me wrong however.... its this thing we have...

Yeah, Asdas or Tescos are my big hope. I haven't pre-ordered.

The launch is ruined for me anyway, because I'll be getting a look at it before the release date, and I'd really rather not...

Just remember to keep it real.... and think of us little guys when your big day is 'ruined'. :o

No, I'm serious. We're being sent a review machine, that we have to give back, and limited time to play through and review games.

It's not ideal. For that reason I've bumped it to the other guy so i don't even have to touch the cunt. Hoop-La!

lime using yet another thread to show off. poor me i have to cope with reviewing the 360 earlier than you plebs. ho hum.

you can be more subtle than that lime, surely?

Oh Christ, look I've already said I won't be playing it. I'll be in Tesco hoping to get one for launch. I'll be seeing it, though, no doubt. I'm not reviewing the 360 stuff.

EDIT: And to be honest, reviewing stuff early isn't really much fun. You're hammering through it, at a pace that isn't really your own. So it's never anything to boast about, having early goes on stuff. It's a bit of a pisser.
