Resident Evil 4

Didn't even realise they sold Re4 on disc for the 360? I got the download on the 360 a while back. Think that was my last playthrough of the game - must have played through resi 4 a good 3-5 times.

I got the Steam version now as well so will expect i'll play through that sometimes.

I also think the new tomb raider games take some inspiration from resi 4 as well at times.

I completed on Wii and Gamecube, think the Wii for me was the definitive experience. I remember finding the stick aiming really fiddly when I went back to it.

Gonna dust down the xbox, always good to have an excuse to go back to RE4!

Well, the excellent things about the Wii version is that it's proper 480p and you can use any controller inc. The Original Gamecube controller.. and it has all the content. I like the Wii controls, but it makes the game very, very easy, for me it's all about the Gamecube controller.

The one massive issue with the Wii version is the bullshit smudge-o-vision hardware anti-aliasing that you can't turn off that is absent in the GC version.

It kinda looks better at 480i/p and would be benefited even more through an external scaler. The HD version is natively higher resolution but the textures are the exact same. Some say there's some framerate issue.

The textures aren't entirely the same in the HD version, some were replaced - but by rather poor quality replacements that don't match the originals. This is why that fan made HD retexture is quite exciting, they are working from the buildings and other sources that were used as references by the original art team to exactly recreate the same look in modern resolutions.

Still, it looks alright on 360, even though it's very obvious that some of the models and textures were not designed to be seen in such a high res. The great art style covers a multitude of sins.

On that note not only is it 4.50 on 360 but also a fiver on Steam at the moment. PC version is of course moddable but has mixed reports performance-wise.

I bought the PC version recently but am waiting to see if the fan texture mod ever gets finished before playing it again (the problem being it's 2 blokes is doing it in their spare time for free). 1080p/60fps with superior visuals will be worth the wait, I wonder if I can get it to work with a GameCube controller adaptor for the ultimate version.

Ha, exactly what I was thinking whilst playing TR yesterday. All this RE talk makes want a replay of 4 as well. Wonderful memories of playing it on my Q. :)

Man, I remember getting this through the post from videogamesplus.ca, Canadian import as per to play on my Modded JP Cube.

It that point in time I was juggling between - Halo 2, Half-Life 2, Metroid Prime 2 then this game. All out Nov 2004, what a time to be alive! ...and it was all cheap.

Also highlights the PAL delay nightmare. 5 months! Imagine that now! Twitter would be sending even more death-threats to devs!

Same, videogamesplus.ca used to get all my money for XBOX and GC games back in the day when not only did they come out earlier but were also cheaper due to exchange rates

Aye!

Towards the end of the import golden-age, I actually switched to Tronix for all my stuff, which became the popular importer of choice over on ntsc-uk.

Situated in New York, you could order a new game, with 48 hr Fedex shipping and it would be marked as a gift.

New games were £40 in the shop, but I'd routinely get US imports for around £28 each time. Always 60Hz and often months before the UK release.

Kids these days don't know they're born, with their global releases!

I was thinking the exact same thing when the Twitter lot were moaning about a poor Nintendo Direct (Mini!)...at least games come out globally at the same time mostly and run at full speed, can just buy the local hardware!

Watching Bawkbasoup doing RE4 VR right now. Looks great fun.

It's really interesting. I'm about 4 hours in and bosses are relatively easy because you're so much more mobile now, but crowds can be a bit tough to deal with. I've played Resi 4 countless times over the years, but this feels incredibly fresh so far.

This game is now of legal drinking age! 😲

I've recently played it through for the Xth time and it’s still wonderful.
Will be belting through Separate Ways later, which is also fantastic and adds to Ada’s story quite dramatically.

The remake isn’t far away, and whatever they do to it, well, if it ends up better, then wayhey, but if not, we’ll always have this old pair of comfortable slippers to slide on.

I got it on release and played through it, but honestly I found it completely forgettable. Thought the E3 videos and the village setting were awesome but after that I just found it a bit blah. Played through it again recently and was surprised how much of a game is there; took like 17 hours to beat.

Making this post does conjure scenes of Leon walking into the setting of villagers chasing down him down with their pitchforks.

The men in white coats will be around shortly 😀
