1) Is that from Fight Club? I'm sure it is. S'alright, a bit simple rock.

2) Thought it was Devendra Banhart (sp) for a minute...nice and mellow, this 'un.

3) Bit odd, this one. Seemed to drag a bit, sadly.

4) Manicly Streeted Preaching? Sounds like early stuff of theirs, maybe.

5) Oh man, awesome stuff. I've completely forgotten who it is, though.

6) Supergrass - Late in the Day (I think). Great choon from everyone's fifth favourite band.

7) Nice ditty! Another good track, this.

:) Uh? This sounds like some B-52s thing or something. Ker-a-z-e-e-eee.

9) Oh, man. This is one of those tracks were if you listen to it driving home in your car on an empty road in the middle of night, you'd probably freak out for aaaages.

1) 8-bit 'Let it Snow'!

2) 8-bit 'Silent Night'!

3) 8-bit 'Last Christmas...'!

4) 8-bit...damn, I don't know! I recognise, but I cannot name!

Well done, Mr Alan! I nearly thought I would've been the first forumite to fail to receive three of the CDs in the same half-year!

I'll have to grab the tracklisting from work in January, sorry. Glad you liked most of it, though!

Wow.  Now that's how to do Christmas music.  Such a beautiful selection of tunage, soft and elegant voices/singing to most of the tracks.  I liked track #5 best.  I feel I should probably know #14 but don't and track #16 rounds the CD off nicely.  I'm going to put this on full-blast Xmas day, I reckon.  It's nice enough to not be intrusive but also nice enough to fill that silence just once in a while.

Ta man, I like.

magic lord, I thought you might be mildly amused hear that I gave a few of my nearest and dearest a copy of the CD I sent you to get them in the festive spirit and I edited the cover to include your feedback. I've posted it on my blog but the full size image is here.

OK; my breakdown of the CD I was sent.

I'm not really sure of any of the artists unfortunately, but the CD seems to evolve over time through a number of similar genres. I have absolutely no expertise in the field of dance/house music, as you will probably notice, but I'll do my best to describe what I'm hearing, and to give you some valued feedback, as it's obvious that a great deal of time has been spent getting this to flow perfectly. I don't think I noticed a single clash of beats. I'm not too keen on the first track to be honest, though: It sounds a little too much like what I would expect my neighbours to play at 1 in the morning, but from then on I start enjoying the mix a lot.

Second track has a really nice bassline. The synthy bits that come in every now and then made me smile as well. I also like the way the next track builds up into track four - which sounds much heavier and industrial than the others so far. Whereas the first track sounded like a club track, this sounds like something I'd be listening to at 3 in the morning on an empty highway, riding a chopper in Utah. At the end of this track some fucked up fresh drums start up. Imagine DJ Shadow breakdancing on his drum machine. Thats those drums right there. Lovely ambient background shit too.

Radiohead? That's what track six slowly descends into. 'Everything In It's Right Place' indeed, but those kicks over the top only further my hyperactivity. Then the drums start up and Oh. Shit. Track seven gets pretty heavy again. Dunno if my brain could handle that after the soothing vocals of Thom Yorke, but it seemed to re-adjust eventually. I don't know if you meant to do this or not, or if it just happened, but the tracks seem to 'mix' well before the track changes to the next place on the CD. Or maybe I'm just being stupid and missing something, but it sounds fantastic. Really good quality mixing, and very well paced as well.

Like I said, I'm really not into house or dance that much (I don't have time for everything, after all) but I'm glad you sent this CD to me this month 'cos I'm well enjoying it. Track 9 sounds like it has some kind of Kraftwerk sample in it? That and the Radiohead bit were the only things I recognised (though I suspect the Kraftwerk thing might not even be true).

Anyway; thanks tremendously - really anjoyed it.

Thanks for the feedback. What about track 11 though? It's only like, my favourite track of the year. :)

Track 1, I chose for the catchy vocals, although after listening to it all properly, it seems that I let that one run for way too long.

Track 9 has nothing to do with Kraftwerk afaik.

Yep, due to should be starting the topic tommorow evening. Closing date of Saturday so we don't lose too much time.

Need to go through this thread and get together a list of non-senders - seems to be quite a few unfortunately. :D

No worries. I always forget to read this thread when it's not being bounced about the folder and stuck at the top, my fault for not pestering bmp about it. Or posting a reply to your CD! Which will follow soon in an edit to this.

I'd stopped at the Christmas tracks and failed to get back into the festive spirit. Even now :(

Firstly- I always thought Jimmy would be a CD TEXT man which in a way spoils the suprise but I try my best not to look at the scroller...not very hard though.

01. Lady Sovereign - Hoodie (Basement Jaxx Remix)

LOZL Sovereign. I still don't know if it's credible to like her or not, but I don't really. This mix is far superior to the orignal though. However, I just ended up skipping this track every time I put the CD on after a few spins. Mainly because the next track is wicked.

02 - Wir Sind Helden - Von Hier an Blind

Brilliant. Probably my favourite track on the CD. Someone told me about them a while back but it got added to the big pile of 'check out X' in my head. I forced him into sending me their lastest album once I'd heard this straight away! I'll certainly be keeping an eye out for them. A mix between Talulah Gosh and Franz Ferdinand if they were German. I'm actually tempted to play something of theirs next time I DJ, but it would make me look really arsey and that's one thing I try and avoid :(

03. Karen Verros - You Just Gotta Know My Mind

Good song all right, but it just kind of washed over me. The mix CD was definetly one of peaks and troughs, probably due to the end handful of songs not really feeling part of it. Still good though, it just didn't make me dive to see what it was called :(

04. Jarvis Cocker - This Is The Night

Still every time I hear the first few words he croaks out I think it's some Babyshambles song. I don't know why. It just taints it. Really haunting, ace song. King of sounds a lot like The Coral in places though, when it breaks down and the spread of instruments and the general eerieness. Don't know how it works on the soundtrack though!

05. Death In Vegas - Lies

I don't really like DIV too much, but this was a standout track when I was listening to the mix hungover. It does seem to do nothing for three minutes though.

06. Gil Scott Heron - Lady Day And John Coltrane

Hot! Again, probably a peak from the DIV trough of hushness. The build up then knock down is too smooth then it hits up the simple jazzy keying and I was sold down some sort of smooth choclatey river. If I had a SEX MIX like Jeez from Peep Show this would go on it.

07. Esquerita - Gettin' Plenty Of Lovin'

This didn't really slide in like I was expecting to. And still, listening to it now it just kind of charges out of my speakers in a rush. Not neccessarily a bad thing just feel it changed my perception of the song. Which in general is a bit 'meh'.

08. Linda Yamamoto - Horiuchi

Ace. It's just a bizzarre song. I don't know if it's a peak or a trough but it certainly has a spiky point somewhere! The strings make me feel like it should be totally more Japanesey which is frustrating...in a good way? I've only played Ouendan briefly so didn't recognise it to be from that by the way.

09. Phoenix - Another fucking 'Too Young' song

I honestly had to think for that split second I didn't have Holly's CD in. This mix is smooth yet airy. Like an Aero.

10. Jazzanova - Boom Klicky Boom Klack (That's What We Do)(Ft Shaun Escoffery)

Is goodish but way too long. The ends don't really justify the means and the difference on my crappy laptop speakers at the minute aren't really doing the best bits of the song justice, but the beats sounded pretty good out of my system.

11. Rob Dougan - Pause

Amazing. Perfectly creates a clear cut balance between both sides of the mix, without really leaning either way. Like a big butchers knife right through the plasic. Brilliant!

12. The D4 - Don't Believe In Christmas

A John Peel festive favourite. He played it plenty in the lead up and I still love it. Would I get bummed if I said it made me cry a wee bit? Not the song. Just the thought of John and that. Even now (I'm typing this a month after I started the reply!) I'm feeling a bit weepy for John.

The songs SHITE though *WINKY SMILIE*

13. The Soundtrack Of Our Lives - Jingle Bells

It's like they've drank an oil tank of egg nog or something. Quite creepy really and fairly unfestive sounding. The kids wouldn't be sleeping after this.

14. Run DMC - Christmas In Hollis

I was waiting for this. It's like the cool alternative to 'Fairytale In New York' or something. Brilliant.

15. Outkast - Players Ball (Original Version)

Meh. Really just fell on it's face after Rev Run had given his blessings but the next tune saved it ending on a bum note.

16. Halcali - Slalom 03 (Galaende No Jyoou)

Fucking ace. Where'd you get this? "Bling bling bling...*some words I don't know*...bling bling bling bling bliiiing* There's one bit where it sounds like she says 'atchoo'. That's the best bit.

(I've been insanely busy at work, and I only really get to listen to stuff during the walk in on a morning; by the time I get here with a glowing review ready, i'm called off to do something trivial like justify why they pay me :lol:)

Nice feedback, you judged it fairly well. I mean, I knew it was a very uneven affair and did mix and match it up a lot right up until the final moment. Tracks 5-8 stayed the most static but everything around it changed multiple times. Too many ideas and not enough tracks to give things transitional space. I knew you'd appreicate the variety so it was a case of "fuck it" in the end.

Pretty much. Its highly amusing and oh-so-very wrong, but its catchy and has charm. Never liked any of her other stuff though.

Wir Sind Helden are cool and Ive seen them around for a few years (the joys of German music TV) but only took interest really when I heard their last single Nur Ein Wort which I thought was completely unbeatable until I heard this. The video is ace and is done in the style of Herge's Tintin. Also, its an easy song to understand so I notice the clever wordplay going on aswell.

I know what you mean. Im finding it very hard to pin down how old this is aswell because it could quite easily be from the 60's. Its my favourite level on Ouendan. Still, how did you know it was from that then hmm? :lol:

Had to put in a christmas section again but it was much harder to choose this time. I wanted to choose stuff that didn't resort to old tricks like bells, and carol-esq lyrics and I used up a few ace tracks on the CD last year still....

..excuseable no? The best christmas hip-hop tune.

Its typical Outkast I suppose. The original version has slightly more christmassy lyrics than the album version but its quite subtle in its christmas-ness in both versions.

Don't start me on Halcali because I won't shut up about them. I could probably start a topic about them (but won't because nobody would care) and point out all the old school hip-hop references, the non-sensical lyrics, the goofy dance routines and the parodies in their videos. Wikipedia gives a good history. YouTube have all the videos for streaming. Check out Tandem, Giri Giri Surf Rider, and Marching March in that order.

I saw them on "Adam and Joe go Tokyo" which I saw again this year after downloading it, which prompted me to check some more of their stuff. Their first album Bacon I listened to almost everyday of the summer - its just perfect. Slalom '03 is a b-side from the Strawberry Chips single, which is christmassy itself and features the duo as dancing christmas trees. My favourite bits of Slalom is the simplicity of "ABCDEFG, HIJKLMNOP" and the bit at the end of the chorus which sounds like "..in a cooking paradise". This song is typical of the effortless rapping that is pretty much their trademark.

They are ace, and cute, and pure hip pop.
