November Cd Mix Club

Recommended Posts

Received my CD today, I don't know who it's from and I had no idea what kind of music it would be either, fearing some sort of hardcore mix.

Well, parts of that were difficult, but it was an interesting journey. There are definitely tracks in there which I like, particularly the ska stuff at the start (which Will danced to, you could see the music grab him :D).

Hey Toonfool

Twas me!

Glad you liked some of it, at least, I really didn't think you would like it all, because there was quite a bit of variety, and that's not a bad reaction from someone who doesn't like punk, given that that's the genre I listen to most.

Tracklisting/comments:

1. Rock Steady - Chris Murray

2. Run Away - The Slackers

3. Decision at Midnight - The Toasters

All pretty straight ska, but all modern bands, apart from Chris Murray, who's just one bloke. Glad you liked, I could have done a whole ska CD, but it wouldn't have been very representative, and you'd have been buggered if you hated ska.

4. More Than Your Eyes Can See - Buck-O-Nine

5. Alone When She Dies - J Church

Like REM? Unless some of they're early/late stuff is quite different to the stuff I've heard - I don't think so, really. But if it is I want to hear it!

6. Start Today - Gorilla Biscuits

7. Revealed In Reflection - Shelter

8. V.R.S. - Good Clean Fun

A good job I picked some of my most melodic hardcore for these three, I think, or it could have been even worse.:P

9. Old School Pig - Tilt

10. Hooray For Me - Bad Religion

Amazed you liked this one at all, given your earlier comments on punk.

11. Automatic Teller - New Bomb Turks

12. MTV - Get Off The Air - Dead Kennedys

A mixed reaction to that one then. I thought it might be recognised, to be honest. B-52s - hehe. The song does take the piss quite heavily, obviously.

13. Dead Battery - Pitchshifter

14. Racing Green - High Contrast

Wanted to put a DnB track in there somewhere, as I have been listening to a bit recently

15. Message To Geri - Clam Abuse

Haha, never thought of it as gay club music, but yeah, it's got a certain campness about it. One half of them is the singer/guitarist/main songwriter of the next band...

16. 29 x the Pain - The Wildhearts

Well, it might well be them that it sounds like. They're a Geordie band, after all. Possibly the best B-side ever written, I think. For added fun, you can play the 'how many references to other bands can you spot' game with this one.

Thanks for your comments anyway, much appreciated. It's the first one I've done, and I really enjoyed putting it together. And I've still got my CD to look forward to. :o

Feedback from Hairy Jesus came through...

A delightful jazz-tastic CD of tap dance music that had Hairy Jesus tip tapping in his room... and it included no Xmas music... excellent and makes a change from the usual Boards of Canada infested rubbish he's received in the past.

...Which was really big of him, considering the last 24 hours. He'll probably send his off too, so I'll post my tracklisting instead of sending this one off again.

1. (Ad Lib) Fast Dances - Fred Astaire

2. Perdido - Duke Ellington & His Orchestra

3. Come Dance With Me - Oscar Peterson

4. New York State Of Mind - Billy Joel

5. All In Love Is Fair - Stevie Wonder

6. Tomorrow Never Knows - The Beatles

7. A Song For Jeffrey - Jethro Tull

8. Rock & Roll - Led Zeppelin

9. Cosmik Debris - Frank Zappa

10. Packt Like Sardines In A Crushd Tin Box - Radiohead

11. The Prime Time Of Your Life - Daft Punk.

Well I'm rather pleased with my CD, this month :o It's a tribute and thanks to a great man.

I'm guessing I've got yours, here's what I thought:

Track 1: Hated this one, as close as I've ever come to skipping a track on a mix CD, just seemed to go on for ever and ever.

Track 2: The Undertones - Teenage kicks. This was the first thing that came to my mind when I saw that it was a tribute to John Peel. I dont know if I agree with him that its the greatest song ever, but its not far off.

Track 3: The Fall? A band I keep on meaning to check out but I've always been a little bit put off because of the amount of stuff that they have released. Any recommendations?

Track 4: The White Stripes - The Hardest Button To Button, I'm a huge White Stripes fan but to me elephant is their worst record and this isn't one of my favourites.

Track 5: lovely piece of sweet electro pop ,I loved this one and listened to it 3 or 4 times in a row. I liked it so much that when I find out who its by I'm going to buy the album straight away.

Track 6: Didn't like this, another one that went on a bit too long.

Track 7: Another one I didn't like, not my cup of tea.

Track 8: This one made me want to get stoned and nod my head along to.

Track 9: An okish peice of punk.

Track 10: Another one I loved, sounded both sweet and sinister at the same time.

Track 11: Sounds like St. Etienne, nice and catchy. Listened to it a couple of times in a row, I especially liked the lyrics.

Track 12: Dont know why but I quite liked this.

Track 13: Stereolab, although I've never heard this song before. Up to their usual excellent standard. Which of their albums is this from?

Track 14: A lovely, dreamy acoustic instrumental, the sort of thing I would put on repeat when going to bed and drift off to sleep to.

Track 15: Found this one a bit boring.

Track 16: Didn't like this one either

Track 17: Slow atmospheric closer.

Overall I really liked it and it brought back to me what made John Peels radio show so special, loads of great music mixed with stuff that although I didn't necessarily like was worth a listen. A brilliant tribute. Thanks for the bonus christmas CD as well.

Glad you liked some of it, as you said, it's just like one of John Peel's show. You might hate the last two songs he's play, but then you hear something you want to hear again and again.

Anyway here's the tracklisting...

01. Meat Beat Manifesto - Radio Babylon

02. The Undertones - Teenage Kicks

03. The Fall - Midnight Aspen ...you're probably best getting their new album Heads Will Roll. I've never bought any Fall albums before, but I can see myself buying their new one. As I heard a couple of tracks off it, and I like them both (Midnight Aspen is one of them BTW).

04. The White Stripes - The Hardest Button To Button

05. Hefner - When The Angels Play Their Drum Machines [Mothership Mix] ..from their Dead Media album.

06. Ko-Wreck Technique - Metro Dade (Plaid Mix)

07. Smart Systems - The Tingler (Stateside Swamp Mix)

08. Augustus Pablo - King Tubby Meets Rockers Uptown

09. Joy Division - The Drawback

10. Nouvelle Vague - Marian

11. Marine Research - Chucking Out Time

12. John Callaghan - Give Me Some Air

13. Stereolab - I Was A Sunny Rainphase ...from 3x7" singles they released in September, see here: http://www.discogs.com/release/523342

14. Rothko - Red Cell

15. Yimino - Sausage Man

16. AFX - Laughable Butane Bob

17. Boards Of Canada - Sherbert Head

To those interested, the tracklisting for my bonus Xmas CD was....

01. V/Vm - Erald Hark Angel

02. Low - Just Like Christmas

03. Low - Blue Christmas

04. Cocteau Twins - Frosty The Snowman

05. Prof. Broxburn - Christmas Fractions And Brandy Snaps

06. Hell Interface - Soylent Night

I got my CD from Paulando this morning, and listened to it a few times already. Great CD, thanks mate.

I could have put at least half of this CD together myself! So that's a definte result in the "likeability" category, but it a bit of a shame in the "sample some new music" category.

A quick rundown of the tracks...

1 - Simon & Garfunkel - Sound of Silence. I grew up listening to these guys. So did my wife, although I once found a tape of hers with "Simon And The Garfunkels" written on it. I almost divorced her for that. This is classic stuff.

2 - No idea. I really liked this track. Very much my kind of thing. I'm not too keen on the female/choral singing parts, but I'm sure I'd get used to it. I'll probably buy this when I find out what it is.

3 - No idea. This seemed to drag a bit for my tastes. There's not an instantly identifiable tune, at least not in the same vein as the previous two tracks. This was probably the only track I didn't really care for.

4 - Amiee Mann - Save Me. I love the Magnolia soundtrack, and Aimee Mann in general. Top track.

5 - Oooh - old school! This is Cat Stevens, isn't it? I haven't heard this for an absolute age! No idea what the track's called, but it's great.

6 - No idea. It sounds a little like The Sugarplastic, but it's definitely not them. I haven't made up my mind about this one yet. I'll have to give it a few more listens. Makes me think of Stereolab, but happier.

7 - Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - Nature Boy. Great track. This one always reminds me of Make Me Smile (Come Up And See Me) by Steve Harley. Top stuff.

8 - No idea. Reminds me a little bit of Bentley Rhythm Ace. It's nice enough, and quite a chirpy little song. I'm curious as to who this is.

9 - No idea. This is really nice background music. I'm not a massive fan of this kind of thing, but I do like a listen every now and then (usually when I've got a headache).

10 - Eels. I don't remember the track though. I'm guessing it's either from Electro-Shock Blues or Beautiful Freak. It doesn't really sound like their more recent stuff (except maybe Blinking Lights, but I know it's not from that). Lovely track.

11 - Hehe, very good! This is an excellent cover of There Must Be An Angel. I normally really hate anything to do with Annie Lennox, but this is actually really nice. Who is it?

Oh, I posted my CD today as well.

Thanks Hardwired, glad you liked (most of) it. Shame there wasn't much music that you hadn't heard before, but that's the luck of the draw I guess! :) Here's the tracklist:

01. Simon and Garfunkel - The Sounds Of Silence

Yeah, it's a classic tune this. I thought it opened the CD nicely.

02. Sufjan Stevens - The Man Of Metropolis Steals Our Hearts

I was introduced to Sufjan Stevens through the 'Best album of 2005' thread. This is one of the most immediate tracks I thought, but it's a great album and well worth checking out.

03. Ulrich Schnauss - On My Own

Ulrich is ace, but not for everyone obviously ;)

04. Aimee Mann - Save Me

The Magnolia soundtrack is gorgeous as you say.

05. Cat Stevens - Here Comes My Baby

I can't remember where it was, but I heard this a few weeks ago somewhere. It's ace.

06. Pony Up! - Shut Up And Kiss Me

I was introduced to these from a mate a few weeks ago. The album this track is from is a nice enough collection of pop tracks, but I particularily liked this one.

07. Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - Nature Boy

My favourite from 'Abbatoir Blues', very catchy. It always reminds me of Christmas as I listened to it a lot at the end of last year

08. Blockhead - The Art Of Walking

I love the new album, released a month ago. Electronica-type stuff.

09. Flevans - Sweep Definitive

I was checking out the Tru Thoughts website (the record label that Bonobo, a favourite of mine, started out on) and came across Flevans. I bought the EP Collection from Play and I love it. Great album, lots of relaxing/funky stuff.

10. Eels - Climbing To The Moon

I felt dirty putting another Eels track on one of my Mix Club CDs, but this is one of their best tracks and I couldn't myself  From Electro-Shock Blues, it's totally gorgeous.

11. Fantastic Plastic Machine - There Must Be An Angel

Japanese dance outfit, lots of crazy tunes and this is one of them

Which album's that from? I just had a look on Play and there are loads of 'em!

Well my cds are ready to send. The 1st CD is just some happy dancey stuff I like, and the 2nd CD is what i grew up with...

Most likely the tracks will be known, as I dont really have the kinds of tracks you all seem to have, I listen to alot of main stream stuff. And so becuase of this, I dont think I'll be participating in future cd swaps.

hey! for what its worth, i hardly ever listen to 'mainstream' stuff, and i am sure that a lot of people on here dont, so i for one would be pleased to get a cd from you that may have stuff like that on it, just because it would be stuff i dont normally listen to, which in my opinion is the best thing about the mix club!! It wouldnt be as good for me if i got the same kind of stuff that i listen to every month!!

just my opinion <_< sorry if you leave the club though...

like paddyo's already said, I wouldn't say that's a problem for the mix club. There's a few people here who don't like to receive a CD of mainstream music, but then there's probably just of many people who don't want a CD of full-on electronic stuff - that doesn't stop people from sending it out. I'd be perfectly happy to receive a CD of mainstream stuff cos I very rarely listen to the radio and I'd be just as likely to find new stuff I like that way.

Well, mine is almost finished now.

Quite happy with how it turned out. Hope that Holly likes it too.

<_<

Looking forward to it! I've got my CD nearly done, just need to get round to getting a CD out of the car for another track... will be sending it out to goldbricker after the weekend.

cheers you two. Well hopefully bph wont be too disappointed. I havent recieved mine yet..maybe it ws HJ???

The whole idea of this is to hear new music, so I wouldnt worry about having mainstream tastes, participating in the mix club will change that <_<

I'll be sending you a cd sometime next week, so hopefully you will like it and change your mind about leaving the mix club.

Yeah, I don't mind at all what kind of music I get - I'd rather get a CD that's something different to my usual tastes actually. I've picked up quite a few albums over the months from tracks I've heard from these CDs by artists I'd normally not check out.

Yeah exaclty, and I dont really have any "new" music, although I just found a band thats new to me "closure" pretty frikking good, but no doubt its a delorean here.

And I have found lots of stuff from this mix club that I like and never would have thought to buy etc.

Im looking forward to your cd.

Well the 2nd cd in the mix, will almost certainly be stuff you havent heard (what a brave statement I just made*) its stuff that I was listening to when I was 14 or so. I grew up with it, and its always been something I remember fondly.

*Or blatantly stupid.

Okay, I've got volume 2 but still don't know who it's from... was it Hairy Jesus?!

There was a clue with the stamps I used and the cd should have my name as the artist if you put it in your pc. I was hoping you'd post some comments first but seeing as you keep on asking, I'll admit it was actually from me. Sorry to play games with you, I do like to have a little fun  Hope you like it as much as the first cd?

Recieved Hardwired's CD this morning. Havnt had the time for a proper listen, so feedback will have to wait for a few days (I think it was track 4 I particularly liked) but pretty much all of them seem pretty decent from a first listen.

Just got to burn and send off my CD which I'll get done Tuesday.
