I got mine in the post this morning :P

A nice Indie romp overall, lots of Franz Ferdinand-alikes, with a lovely Radiohead song I hadn't heard before, and a Radiohead remix on there aswell.

Thanks, Anon. This kind of stuff is exactly what's missing from my collection. Review to come shortly.

Yay, someone like's my music :D Not too fond of the Franz Ferdinand comment though, I detest those sods :D

Let me know if you want a track listing.

So anyway. The album I got from whoever I got it off (AND THE STORY)

It's a best of 2005. It's gotta be good.

track 1: Beck - E-Pro, probably the best track of 05 so a very good start.

track 2: It's a metal track. Now don't get me wrong. I LOVE metal. Unfortunately I'm sure few metal fans would disagree when I say that 2005 has been a fallow year. I think that was my main problem with this month. Basing a 2 CD set around a genre that hasn't had it's best year. Sounds like Killswitch Engage anyway, probably isn't (BFMV?)

track 3: oooh, folk metal. Feel I should know what this is but it escapes me.

track 4: I liked this track, not the sharpest lyrics in the world but it had something to say. Always good.

track 5: Another not Killswitch Engage track. There is some gorgeous work in this one though, I just feel it pulls too many punches. Would have worked better if they went more for the Slayer sound than Machine Head.

track 6: Well, I wasn't expecting any pan pipes. I like this, the way it kinda meanders round is gorgeous.

track 7: Daft Punk - Robot Rock. Good track, was a shame about the rest of the album (imo)

track 8: Desert City Soundtrack. Dunno the track but it's very good.

track 9: meh

track 10: Probably my favourite track on the album. Flows very well, sounds like Blood Brothers with Fred Durst.

track 11: nice little interlude. I thought it was the obligatory Go Team track for a minute

track 12: I dunno what this is, directionless twaddle imo.

album 2

Right, so I barely knew what any of this was. I had it on in my little office when one of my Year 12 maths retake students walked in. The guy is a nightmare to deal with. No one has been able to connect with him. He's come to talk about dropping out. But I have Witchcraft and Slough Feg on (apparently) and I'm suddenly the coolest teacher of all time. So we rocked on decimal multiplication and shape and area for a bit and chatted about local metal bands. This morning he was the first kid there. He usually staggers in 20 minutes late stoned out of his tree. Nailed all his work 100%, all cos of this CD.

tracks I liked:

Only, Only is on my best of 05 CD too, track 6 (some good shit), track 7 (it was long but it went somewhere and I liked that), Royksopp - 49%, track 11 was coo' too.

4. Sneaker Pimps - Walking Zero

5. Money Mark - Tomorrow Will Be Like Today

6. Massive Attack - Protection

7. Boards of Canada - 1969

8. Bill Withers - Ain't No Sunshine

9. Kinobe - Slip Into Something...

10. Lunar Selector - Sorry (Lunar Selector Language Timothy Dub)

I ditched the classical track she entered to as it wouldn't fit on the CD

No, I've been listening to it. Don't want to judge a book...

Anyway. Track 1 is good and I didn't realise it was Zero 7 so thanks for that. The air, massive attack, nina simone, badly drawn boy and bill withers are all tracks that are in my collection somewhere.

The tracks that intrigued me were:

4. Sneaker Pimps - Walking Zero

I guessed this was the pimps but I didn't remember it. I just now pulled becoming X off the shelf and ripped it due to this track. Thanks for that one.

7. Boards of Canada - 1969

I almost bought a BoC album the other week as I've never heard their stuff before. Unfortuantely I don't think I'll bother now. It just didn't have enough substance for me. Just like I find a lot of Royksopp stuff to be quite dull to be honest.

9. Kinobe - Slip Into Something...

Now this really intrigued me. Where is this music from as I've heard it before? No doubt an advert or something. Really nice track and gets better with each listen. Definate high point.

12. Nightmares on Wax - Les Nuits

Again I've got quite a bit of Nightmares on wax in my collection and am a fan, but didn't recognise this. On first listen I hated it and the rest of the CD infact. I don't think I was in the mood just after playing football. It's a decent track but I'd argue not their best.

14. Señor Coconut & Su Conjunto - The Robots

15. Grant Green - High Heeled Sneakers

16. Hans Zimmer - You're So Cool

All I can say is :D The last of those 3 sounds like a Nintendo videogame title screen tune. Not really my thing but nice for expanding the horizons. Certainly wouldn't say it's bad music.

17. Yann Tiersen - La Valse d'Amelié (piano version)

This is just beautiful while it lasts. I love emotional piano music like this. Don't know what you call the style. Ahh just googled it and it's from one of my favorite films of all time, should have guessed due to the song title.

18. Quincy Jones & His Orchestra - Soul Bossa Nova

What a storming tune to end on. I'm used to it being acompanied by the lyrics "My definition, my definition is this". Can't remember the source but it's a cracking tune and superb to leave to.

Good luck in your marriage and thanks for the CD.

Aces. Hope to receive it next week then.

I'm usually not into laid back stuff (far from it actually :)), but really liked most of the albums I got, which were packed with laidback songs. :)

I got my CD(s) from tonymg...

1. Ah Go! Team. Nice. Funny how their songs sound totally different to me heard in isolation from the rest of the album. I spent the first 2 minutes going "This sounds like The Go! Team..." but for some reason it sounded different to me.

2. Hmm, this could be a lot of bands. Sung and played well though.

3. Sly & The Family Stone. Great song from a great album. *Thumbs up*

4. Gemma Hayes.. I was really fond of her first album, but I never got around to picking up the new one; I presume this is from it. Sounds a bit more mainstream this time around. Still, nice little song.

5. This was alright.

6. Ah, I recognise the chorus line... Modest Mouse? This is pretty cool. I never got into Modest Mouse, in spite of my drummer's attempts of showing me the way. Might have to listen to some more.

7. This was okay too. Haven't really developed a taste for slidey blues as of yet.

8. Where's this from? Quite a nice little piece of music.

9. This was nice.

10. Kanye West. Nice sample, nice song.

11. Lovely little voice on this one.

12. "This is CD #1" "#2" #3" "#4". ZAIREEKA! :) I did the Zaireeka experience a few years ago, it was lots of fun (and very loud). Did you mix these down yourself? It sounds pretty good, considering. There were a couple of songs from Zaireeka that had proper official stereo mixes that were released on the Soft Bulletin Companion free CD/bootleg thing. Riding to Work in the Year 2025 and Thirty Thousand Feet of Despair, I think.

But yeah, the whole album should get a stereo release. It really is a bit of a hassle to do the 4 CD thing everytime.

13. Didn't like this one that much.

14. Dreamy instrumental.

15. Electroplanton. Chimey and ambienty. It's nice at 2am.

I'll have a listen to the 2 restrospective CDs later. I'm probably going to check out Modest Mouse too. Pretty nice CD overall, maybe a bit too familiar, but some stuff I hadn't heard for a while, so it was nice. :)

7. Boards of Canada - 1969

You didn't love 1969? Bad show!

9. Kinobe - Slip Into Something...

www.commercialbreaksandbeats.co.uk suggests it's been used on Kronenberg and Magnum adverts, randomly. The album is called Soundphiles if you want some more.

16. Hans Zimmer - You're So Cool

This is the recurring theme on the soundtrack of True Romance. mrs lfj believes it is one of the most romantic films of all time :)

17. Yann Tiersen - La Valse d'Amelié (piano version)

The style? It's a waltz.

18. Quincy Jones & His Orchestra - Soul Bossa Nova

It was the basis for My Definition Of A Boombastic Jazz Style by the Dream Warriors. It's also the opening music to Austin Powers. We've got an amazing photo of us walking down the aisle after the ceremony just grinning our heads off because of this music :)

Glad you got some enjoyment out of the CD!

Well goldbricker's been very quiet since receiving my double CD bonanza, so either he hasn't listened to them yet or he thinks they're awful and is just being polite... :D Here's the tracklistings:

I Grew Up In The 80s:

Doctor! Doctor! - Thompson Twins

E=MC2 - Big Audio Dynamite

Tesla Girls - OMD

New Gold Dream - Simple Minds

Atomic - Blondie

Everything's Gone Green - New Order

The Sun Always Shines On TV - A-Ha

World In My Eyes - Depeche Mode

Relax - Frankie Goes To Hollywood

Shout - Tears For Fears

What Have I Done To Deserve This? - Pet Shop Boys

True Faith - New Order

The point of this wasn't so much that I grew up listening to this stuff, rather that I wish I'd discovered most of it when I was growing up, rather than coming across it way after the fact. The only stuff on here that I actually knew at the time was Doctor! Doctor! and Shout, and that's cos I had them on a free Weetabix cassette along with Come On Eileen and There's A Guy Works Down The Chipshop Swears He's Elvis...

I Hope You Like Underworld:

Luetin

Twist

Skym

Trim

Dirty Epic (dirty guitar mix)

Ballet Lane

Most 'Ospitable

Air Towel

Tongue

8 Ball

Stagger

Yes, they're all Underworld tracks. I figured I could only get away with it this month cos I was doing another CD too... I'm a massive Underworld fan, and it annoys me that a lot of the time the only thing people know of theirs is Born Slippy, which by and large is totally unrepresentative of everything else they've done. So I figured I'd stick together some off their less clubby, more chilled out stuff. Of course if it turns out goldbricker's already a fan then this was a bit pointless... :P

Sorry for the delay in posting birthday celebrations got in the way.

I Grew Up In The 80s:

It's funny I consider myself a "child of the 80s" since I'm a similar age to you I'd guess. I recognise a lot of 80s music but never listened to it in much detail at the time and I've got clearer memories of 90s stuff. I tend to find that there was a lot of tripe released in this time but at the same time some of it I find really accessible and I can see it's importance. It was good to kind of put a name to bands like Simple minds and OMD who I recognised but had never really heard much of their stuff.

01. Doctor! Doctor! - Thompson Twins

I've heard a lot about the Thompson twins but didn't know any of their songs apart from this which I'd heard before and like a lot especially the chorus.

02. E=MC2 - Big Audio Dynamite

I don't recognise this and it didn't do much for me, seemed to lack the chorus of the previous track.

03. Tesla Girls - OMD

Like the Thompson twins I've heard about OMD but never listened to their stuff. This track was a lot more electronic sounding than I had expected and was all the better for it.

04. New Gold Dream - Simple Minds

I've not heard this before but was instantly drawn to it since it seemed to have been sampled for a dance track which I think could be "Open your mind" but I'm not sure.

05. Atomic - Blondie

A classic, I don't own any Blondie but you can't fail to like this.

06. Everything's Gone Green - New Order

I don't mind New order but I tend to only go for the more well-known tracks such as Blue Monday.

07. The Sun Always Shines On TV - A-Ha

I liked this track, I've definitely heard it before but never sat down and listened properly it's another great chorus that does it for this song.

08. World In My Eyes - Depeche Mode

I've only got into Depeche Mode recently. I find them to be quite hit or miss some of their tracks are truely stunning though. This is a great little song the bassline is great and compliments the singer perfectly.

09. Relax - Frankie Goes To Hollywood

Another classic, I guess this would be on most 80s compilations.

10. Shout - Tears For Fears

Funnily enough this is the second time I've been sent this in the mix cd club. I'm not complaining I love this song my Dad used to own the albums and I listened to them quite a bit.

11. What Have I Done To Deserve This? - Pet Shop Boys

I've never been a big Pet shop boys fan, but this is a really good track and I think there's some more Pet shop boys stuff that I'd quite like these days.

12. True Faith - New Order

My comment about New order applies here, a great song.

I hope you like Underworld:

I'm a big Underworld fan but listening to this makes me realise that I have listened to Second Toughest far more than the other albums and so this was a bit of a voyage of discovery for me too.

01. Luetin

I've barely listened to A hundred days off so this track was a real eye opener for me. I love the chord sequence that runs through it and the way it builds up.

02. Twist

As above another gem off A hundred days off. Similar thoughts to the track a lovely piano chord running throughout and the drums are classic Underworld.

03. Skym

I bought Beaucoup fish when it came it and didn't really rate it. I did the same with Second toughest and ended up having to buy it again. I'm tempted to do the same with this Karl Hyde's voice compliments this track so well.

04. Trim

Wasn't so keen on this one but still a good track.

05. Dirty Epic (dirty guitar mix)

I've not heard this before - where's it from? In places it reminded me of a track from Rez it would suit the game perfectly.

06. Ballet Lane

A mellower track from A hundred days off the highlight for me was the guitar loop which played throughout.

07. Most 'Ospitable

Don't think I've heard this before, I liked it when the chord from Dark train started playing I guess they maybe mix the two tracks together when playing live?

08. Air Towel

Ah, this is off Second Toughest every track a gem. :(

09. Tongue

Wasn't too keen on this it didn't seem to go anywhere.

10. 8 Ball

I remember looking forward to hearing this when it was on the Beach soundtrack but never thinking the track was up to much.

11. Stagger

Awesome track, one of their best imo. I just love the way it builds up I could listen to this repeatedly.

So, in conclusion this has been an interesting month I've learnt about some cool 80s stuff and been reinvigorated to listen to some more Underworld.

Alan, I'll post up the tracklist for the CD that I sent you feel free to ask about any of the tracks or post feedback if you want to.

01. DJ Q-Bert - Four

02. Hawkeye - Still jiving

03. Timo Maas - Pictures

04. Meco - Star Wars Medley (12inch Disco Mix)

05. Prince - Raspberry Beret

06. Alter Ego - Beat The Bush (Ewan Pearson's Slow NRG Edit)

07. Max Sedgley - Happy (Blackbeard rework)

08. The Budos Band - Up From The South

09. Johnny Cash - Cry! Cry! Cry!

10. Mark Farina - Nostalgia

11. Bonobo - Nothing Owed

12. Gorillaz - Dirty Harry

13. Sage Francis - The Buzz Kill

14. Depeche Mode - The Darkest Star

15. Mobb Deep - Eye For An Eye (Your beef is mine)

16. Jungle brothers - Jungle brother (Aphrodite Mix)

17. Jolly Mukherjee With The Madras Cinimatic Orchestra - Kirwani

18. The Herbaliser - Something Wicked

19. David Axelrod - The Human Abstract

20. Meco - Star Wars medley (reprise)

Timo Maas - Pictures

Not sure about the lyrical content of this track but the bassline is so good that it couldn't be left off.

Meco - Star Wars Medley (12inch Disco Mix)

This guy produces "commercial" versions of film themes. I had some discussion with ABB over which version of this track to include since the full version runs to 16 mins but by the end of listening to that I'd had enough of both Disco and Star Wars and so I included this edit instead. There's also a 3 minute edit that might have been better for the mix. I checked on the forum to see if you were a Star Wars fan so I'd love to hear your impression of this.

Gorillaz - Dirty Harry

I'm not a massive Gorillaz fan but I had to include this when I saw it on the Radio 1 advert recently.

Jungle brothers - Jungle brother (Aphrodite Mix)

I used to listen to this at Uni with my mates a lot. The start is great and sometimes I wish that it would end sooner.

Jolly Mukherjee With The Madras Cinimatic Orchestra - Kirwani

This song went on much longer but I thought I'd cut out quite a lot since it got repetitive. If you like this one I'll happily give you the whole track.

David Axelrod - The Human Abstract

This track was sampled by DJ Shadow for the track "Midnight in a perfect world" one of my favourite songs and this is a great song too.

Second Toughest was the first one of theirs I got into, so it's always been a bit of a favourite for me, but I'm glad to have prodded you into listening to their other stuff some more...

The Dirty Guitar mix of Dirty Epic comes from two places. Underworld were briefly known as Lemon Interrupt in the early 90s, and released a single called Dirty - which is as far as I can tell exactly the same track as this. It was then on the Dirty Epic / Cowgirl EP as the Dirty Guitar mix.

I had to look up where Most 'Ospitable was from as it's just something I've had on random mp3 for ages. It's apparently from one of the Dark And Long EPs (there's a few of them and it's not on the one that I have). So it's really just a remix of Dark And Long.

11.  Stagger

Awesome track, one of their best imo.  I just love the way it builds up I could listen to this repeatedly.

Very true, it's one of my absolute favourites alongside Dirty Epic, M.E. and Banstyle/Sappys Curry.

So, in conclusion this has been an interesting month I've learnt about some cool 80s stuff and been reinvigorated to listen to some more Underworld.  ;)

Well I'm rather glad you liked both of them! I figured even if one CD was a disaster you'd like at least one of them... :D

Just so you know, it's featured on the UK cd single of Dark and Long.
