Damn right I didn't. And I'm refusing to give Ubisoft 1200 points for the GRAW map pack too. Gits. I just wonder how many other people have resisted.

I haven't got them even though I love GRAW, but that's mainly because I'm a tight bastard.

Oh yeah, they were sponsored by Mountain Dew in the US weren't they? I don't think we got any mention of it over here though.

I wouldn't mind a bit of advertising on the marketplace (or even well placed banners in-game) if it means free content.

.::: You know, never mind. This is a shiny Dynasty Warriors clone. Your soldiers are even more useless than the ones from Koei. It's like mowing the lawn really. There's a nice kind of satisfaction when you're hitting 20 enemies at once, but if that also includes going straight through 20 of your own soldiers it all seems so pointless.

I feared it, but this confirms it: unworthy of all the hype.

I was going to send you a message on Live thanking you for the heads up but now I demand my time back. It is pretty damn lame. All these characters on screen yet it manages to have no epic battle feel at all.

.::: So I was not the only one thinking that. You are so powerful with a few slashes that it manages to make entire battalions feel like a single enemy. I aslo hate it how it's nigh impossible to seperate enemies from allies when they're fighting. "Defeat the enemy" is almost like playing hide and seek because of it, furiously calling your allies to attack in the hope they move on and uncover enemies they were standing next to sheepishly.

What did Mizuguchi do on this title anyway?

[edit] The worst thing is that it finally manages to work past the technical limitations of Dynasty Warriors, which only had small groups attacking, but manages to completely underuse that feat in pushing the 'genre' forward. I mean, I LIKE Dynasty Warriors as some kind of relaxing button-mash therapy, but this seems even devoid of the small tactical nudges. What was wrong with KUF, Phantagram?

Also: LAND-SLIDE!

I thought that was quite cool. Completely mindless of course but technically very impressive. I'll be quite happy digging the demo out occasionally but can't see myself buying the full game.

.::: You didn't notice the framedrops, slowdown and such then?

Played the PS2 versions?

.::: No, he's right about the amount. It still uses DW's patented AttackGroup formations, only instead of 12 per group they have 50-500 enemies per group. It is impressive. Until they attack your soldiers and do fuck all besides standing still.

Not during the fights but bad slowdown when moving between battles.

.::: Had them during the fights only. Any structure in the vicinity of the battlefield seemed to make it slow down. And sometimes the attacks went all chuggy as well.

Anyone figured out how to make the camera actually useful?

I am not saying that they weren't there during the fights but I didn't notice. However, when moving across an open area it would slow down as a new group of enemies came into sight.

The camera is shocking. What do the L and R shouldder buttons do. It states Guards Left and Guards Right but didn't seem to do much for me (maybe my guards had all been slaughtered by then).

I liked it. Mindless fun, slaughtering thousands of enemies with over the top special attacks. It may not be deep or intelligent or anything, but I like it for what it is: good mindless fun with a really impressive number of enemies on screen for you to hack'n slash your way through. The only thing I didn't like about it, is that a game like this really should have a two-player mode. Ruthlessly slaughtering enemies is always better with two players, like in the DW series.

I liked the DW games, but it always annoyed me that technically the series refused to move on from its psx roots. DW5 on the 360 is laughable, I really hope that DW6 will be the first real improvement to the series, now that Koei has seen what is technically possible with N3.

Incredibly dull. If you're going to throw 300 enemy units at me don't have them charging in silence. I want noise! Screams of pain, war cries, clashing steel, the thunderous sound of a thousand men marching forward. Not the same bloody slice sound effect over and over. Also blood. I don't usually demand blood in games, but rivers of blood would help this out somewhat.

I wouldn't mind being a bit less godlike either. If I was engaging one or two enemies at a time with a sensibly sized sword (Ninja Gaiden style I suppose) while my allies did the same with the rest, it'd be a rediculously impressive game.

just to say - I downloaded and played the Battle for Middle Earth demo thing...

and thought it was rubbish. Does nothing different, text is ridiculously small and the camera is rubbish and there's slow down.

that's all.

cheers

Yep.

Maybe if they'd moved the camera in lower to an over the shoulder perspective and had more emphasis on taking down individuals that form part of a large army rather than take out a group of 15 that may as well have just been one weak enemy with no life bar. I hated trying to find the enemies when they ran into my useless back up.

well excuse the fuck right out of me for thinking me may have meant some PING PONG game on live arcade instead of the TABLE TENNIS demo.

Oh, bugger off. It's fucking Ping Pong.

Apparently, everyone called it Ping Pong, then some bastard trademarked the name. What a dirty fucker.

.::: You mean they didn't trademark it beforehand? Sorry, but that's just asking for it.
