Nintendo Wi-fi Connection

Now some lucky importers have got their hands on Mario Kart DS and UK shops are now stocking Tony Hawk, I fear the threads about the game will end up all cluttered up with talk of routers, dongles, SSIDs, WEP, WPA. MACs etc. Maybe it would be best to confine technical talk to one thread, so we can get through this jungle together. If the mods prefer, this can be moved to ATF or Online.

I bought Tony Hawk this morning. Canary Wharf is one of the flagship sites for The Cloud. Sadly, I've been unable to connect. I've walked everywhere, and I can see plenty of unsecured "mycloud" access points, with good signal strength, but on testing the connection I always get error 52000 "Unable to obtain IP address" or 52001 "The access point is busy". I'll contact Nintendo / The Cloud support and see if I can resolve this. I'll keep you posted!

My Netgear :) router had better work when I get home, otherwise I'll be most unhappy.

I had that with my PSP when I was at a trade show recently, and it's the only time I've ever had the problem - loads of 'unsecured' points that I suspect were nothing of the sort.

Yeah, I suspect it's an authentication / authorisation problem too. You normally have to pay for access. Maybe the special Nintendo permissions haven't been enabled yet.

My Dlink DSL-G604T still isnt working, Ive upgraded the firmware (although it isnt quite clear which is the latest version) and it still wont be found by my DS.

Ive tried all the known fixes (different channels, turning off all security, manually entering an IP address etc.) but none of it makes the slightest difference.

Im going to see if I can find what I think is the latest firmware, its not available from Dlink's website though.

If anyone finds a solution to this or manages to get a DSL-G604T working please tell me how, thanks.

I have a Netgear WGR614v6.

That site originally listed the WGR614v4 as 2-stars 'compatibility problems'. Then it changed the v4 to 4-stars 'Recommended'. And added the v5 as 1-star 'Rarely connects sucessfully to the service'.

It still says nothing about the v6 model, but it doesn't really look good.

I'm going to be so annoyed if it doesn't work. I bought a wireless router in the first place primarily so I could play my DS with it. I can't use a USB dongle because Nintendo haven't bothered to make it Mac compatible. They're really making a mess of this at the moment. :)

Why didn't you buy an airport express? ***** compatibility...

I've got a wired Linksys router already, so I guess I don't need a wireless router. Instead I've ordered this linksys wireless access point which is (supposedly) the access point version of one of the approved routers. Fingers crossed it'll work.

I wasn't sure if I need a wireless router or an access point or whatever at first. If you've already got a wired router, then I think you only need an access point. It will let your DS work for the Nintendo WiFi but also give any other wireless devices you've got access to your network/connection.

So my network will look like this...

                  /-> PC Network
BB modem -> Router -> Wireless Access Point -> DS
                  \-> XBox

MP, go here: http://www.nintendowifi.com/customersuppor...2FWGR614v6.html

There is a section on that site that guides you through step by step set up.

Yeah, but it gives no indication of whether it will work. It gives similar instructions for the v5 model, and it states that that 'Rarely connects sucessfully to the service'. So the fact it gives instructions means nothing, as far as I can see.

My mac isn't wifi, my house needed four wired ports. I'm not sure exactly what an airport express is, but I didn't think it was a WiFi router with four wired ports. Is it? :)

.::: Maybe we can also keep track on confirmed working routers.

The Thomson SpeedTouch 510 in my case.

Don't know if this will be use to anyone, but I've got a Netgear WGT624 (providing the wifi network) connected to a Netgear DG834 (connected to the internet, provides IPs etc), and it all works fine. I could try the DG834 on it's own later on if anyone would be interested.

Don't worry too much about the star ratings, I think if it's got one star it'll work but might need some fiddling with settings etc (see here)

'Tis a mac mini, so I don't think so, unless you know different?

To be honest, I think they should be making sure it works with a new NetGear router, it's not like it's an uncommon make, or something cheap/old.

From a quick look on google it looks like you can upgrade a mac mini to include airport extreme but unless you have bluetooth inside already then you'll need an extra "mezzanine" board in there too. Can get a dealer to do it apparently but it might be a bit costly, more than a router I'm guessing

Bit annoying that seen as the old imacs (and I'm assuming the new ones) could just have it slotted in and the powerbooks have a slot for it under the keyboard.

so can anyone tell me if you can use your wireless card (in a laptop in my case) to work as an access point? i was under the impression that i could do this by bridging my internet and wireless card togther...it's all a bit confusing...

No idea. I've just fixed the router at Sumo HQ though. It was set to a Wireless channel the DS doesn't support, so if anyone else can see their router, but then it fails on the connection test, try changing the channel to 11.

I think (and don't quote me on this) that you can also use channel 1 and 6, but this differs depending on if you have a UK, US or Japanese DS. 11 is common to all 3 though - I think...

Now if the US Sk8land site would let me in, instead of saying 'You're not allowed in yet, come back later' due to me being honest and saying I was based in the UK...

I didn't think it went live in Europe until Mario Kart was released over here.

Bingo.

Dear Graham

Thank you for your recent mail to Support. Even though the Press

release as made about the deal, the service is only due to launch on

the 25th of November.

Kind Regards

Cloud Support

So don't rush to your local hotspot: it probably won't work yet.

Why are people so paranoid about broadcasting the SSID? Does it really make a non-negligible difference to security?

It means anyone can see your network easily. Dedicated types can probably find it, but Joe Public with a PC World bought wireless router won't be able to see it.

Hmm. Found this after a quick google, from another forum.

"Disabling broadcast of the SSID isn't really a security feature anyway. You should change it from the default, if only to keep clear of all the other yahoos in the area that have theirs set to "Linksys", but disabling it doesn't buy you any real security. The SSID is always sent unencrypted, so anybody using a sniffing tool in listening range is able to extract it from your client traffic anyway. If you care about unauthorized users attaching to your AP you should be using other tools like MAC address filtering (which admitedly is also spoofable) and WPA's EAP or PSK."

I'm assuming this means the SSID is little security against the dedicated haxx0rz.

EDIT - never mind - have worked out how to put MAC filtering on too, so I reckon with WEP and MAC filtering, I'm ok from my pensioner neighbours leeching my bandwidth.
