But yes, surely the mag anecdotes are half the appeal of the podcast. It is what sets them apart from everyone else (and that they actually have a really interesting and variable podcast format and that they avoid waffling for half an hour about what they had for breakfast that day). Its one of the very few podcasts that I look forward to appearing in my feed every Friday.

without wanting to sound like I take these sort of comments personally (I genuinely don’t) but aren’t you doing the EXACT same thing here?

it’s the one comment I’ve never really understood. “They talk about non gaming stuff”. We do. Some people like that some people don’t. That’s the cool thing about podcasting, if you don’t there’s tons of alternatives out there.

True. I think the difference is that the clue is in the name - they are going to talk about magazines and anecdotes. If there was a podcast called the 'what I had for breakfast this morning' then it would probably be churlish for me to complain they were talking about what they had for breakfast.

On a general comment about podcasts, you're absolutely right there is no right or wrong way - lots of alternatives out there. I guess my view is that I listen to specific podcasts for specific reasons. I'm sure the guys who do my Formula 1 podcasts have fascinating lives outside of F1, but it isn't really why I listen to the podcast. Its horses for courses though, I'm equally sure there are lots of people who like the freeform chat segments.

@elmo what is Chet Roivas up to these days?  He's got a way with words I really admire but he's all but disappeared from the internet as far as I can tell.   You are still in touch, right?

just playing Dead by Daylight I think.

TCGS this week had a bit of the old school Joypod feel to it, which is probably the highest complement I can give.

cheers mate. Fierce Poodle is also a bellend.

edit: of course if it wasn’t clear neither are bellends x

Backpage Podcast have done the N64 Mini draft this week, and I am absolutely staggered by how badly Matt Castle fucked it.

I mean, he even decided the categories!  It's almost a clean sweep for Big Sammy Holdings.

Quote of the episode - "Ohhhhhhh, shiiiiiiit...."

Disagree.

Spoiler

Matt had F-Zero X dagnabbit. And Mystical Ninja. He definitely went for the more niche offerings and I do like that. Perfect Dark and Goldeneye have aged horribly. And the cracks are starting to show in Mario 64 after playing the Switch collection.

And finally, even though it didn't make his list, Matt gave a shout out to Sucker Punchs best game, Rocket Robot on Wheels.

I agree with you, Popo. Seemed certain that Castle would smash this one but it all started to go a bit pear-shaped for me from Action RPG onwards.

Spoiler

I think a Mario 64/Ocarina double-header is the only way you can counter Goldeneye/Perfect Dark. Majora's may well be the trendy choice - or even the better game - but you need the big marquee titles on the thing and Ocarina is just too definitive to pass up

Really loved this episode. Particularly after what I found to be a rather dry episode on immersive sims. Sometimes the guests feel a bit like they're getting in the way of Sam and Matthew chatting away like mates, which is where a lot of the fun comes from. When they started totting up the multiplayer games they had 😆

Also; N64; what a fucking machine. You could easily make another decent mini with the stuff they passed up on.
