Sometimes the music doesn’t fade down enough before Sam starts speaking but yeah, can’t say I notice any mid-word cuts or anything. Sounds like a playback issue from the podcasting app?

What a great episode though, I’m genuinely thinking about it before I cast my vote as they both made great mini consoles.

Also Sam’s laughing in this was such good value. The bit when he found out Burnout 3 wasn’t on GameCube after all the tense sniping they’d been doing was hilarious.

I must remember to share these more. Our last episode was the first in a while where I wasn't stupidly ill.

And we have arrived at another Back Page Podcast draft! Xbox Vs GameCube.

I voted for Big Sammy Holdings this time. The utter audacity to have the Steel Battalion controller.

And Mathew fucked it by poisoning his console with Mario Sunshine.

Just started this week's podcast and clearly you've touched a nerve!

The draft episode was good. Went with Matthew in the end as the stronger list although would have liked to have seen Burnout 2 (the best of the franchise make an appearance) and maybe things like Star Fox Assault and Battalion Wars which I never got around to playing at the time.

Spoilered chat on the Xbox Vs GameCube BackPage Pod:

Spoiler

Quoting @Jolly

"Can't believe Sam didn't pick Outrun. Reckon that might have tipped it. "

Racing games in general where a massive blind spot on his list - no PGR either - but despite preferences Outrun 2 is so legendary that it has to be on there. So voted against him because of that.

Also neither considered Phantasy Star Online. Of course some problems with whether the console is really online with Xbox and for GameCube you would really need Broadband adapter and that ridiculous keyboard controller. But on GameCube it is still a brilliant 4 player offline game and miles better than the dodgy Matrix and Hitman picks!

Agreed with you about the racers but PSO is definitively a Dreamcast game. There’s no way it fits the criteria they were working in.

Strongly disagree. PSO on GameCube and Xbox is vastly expanded, double the size and still the definitive experience. The GameCube version is still the version that I am playing online, and the version I'd want in a mini system.

Same goes for PGR over MSR.

That might be true but it is inherently a Dreamcast game. It is part of that consoles identity rather than the two in question.

On that proviso you can basically discount around half of Sam's Xbox list!

Maybe a couple but not really. And Sam normally justified their inclusion by noting it was the best version etc. That’s kind of the difference with the consoles I guess, part of the Xbox’s appeal was having the best version of certain multiplat games.

Anyway they talked loads about it themselves (that‘s why MGS Twin Snakes wasn’t in this and RE4 wasn’t on the PS2 mini) so I wont carry on, but in summary:

It’s a Dreamcast game.

I mean when you're wrong just double down on the wrongness isn't it? :D

Still, I am very much enjoying discussing this imaginary console with its imaginary list of games from a podcast with you.

Haha fair enough, I should have said the difference is the ones he chose were pretty platform agnostic games to begin with*. Whereas PSO is so intrinsic to the Dreamcasts identity.

*I think it’s BS Sam included the GTA double pack as those are very much PS2 games to me. As soon as he did that Matt should really have let loose with Twin Snakes, REmake etc.)

Spoiler

Not that he needed to it turns out.

Computer Game Show Draft Episode

Spoiler

Surely Sea of Thieves isn't eligible given it came out like 3 years ago? I guess the joke about it being the Pirate DLC specifically is what allows it, but that means it's only the DLC content that can be discussed presumably?

I believe their new rule is that ANY game can be picked. Whether it came out this year or not. Obviously picking a game that didn’t come out this year runs the risk of not getting through the rounds however I suspect Pirates Life will be seen as enough of an upgrade to get it through. I don’t think it will though as only Sean likes it! Unless, shenanigans!

Wait so Game of the Year is now just whatever game you fancy? David should have brought Titanfall 2 again then, especially since Mat only just finished playing it and loved the campaign.

Not exactly. They had a conversation about how to handle long lived games that can drastically change over time, such as Sea of Thieves and Destiny 2. The ultimate decision was that they would just allow any game to be nominated, but as ever it would fall on that game's champion to justify the choice on the GOTY show.

Titanfall 2 would be unlikely to get very far as the obvious argument would be that it came out years ago and remains the same game it was at the time. However if Titanfall 2 had some kind of massive expansion this year with a new campaign or something, there would be grounds to argue its place in the list.

I’ve learned to take the tcgs GoTY show less seriously these days.

I don't think it's ever been meant to taken seriously. First exhibit: Titanfall 2. :D

I think it's a bit of a stretch to say that Sea of Thieves has changed drastically (not that you necessarily were), but that explanation does make sense. Not that it matters anyway because it has zero chance of making it past the first round, regardless of what it goes up against :D

What happened with Titanfall 2 was amazing, still makes me smile when thinking about it!

Honestly like the guys I’m grateful for more time to get through some games myself. These things are always more enjoyable to listen to if you’ve a bit more skin in the game.

Also I think it will have an interesting effect on a certain recently-released game with a dodgy second half of a campaign.

The MHG GOTY podcast is out.

Was you busy Christmas Day and missed our #goty special? Well you can listen now as podcasts aren't live.

Did #TetrisEffectConnected from @enhance_exp make it again? Or did #MetroidDread take top spot? Maybe it was #ShovelKnightPocketDungeon or a surprise with @RailRouteGame

Haha same. Although Backpage has done a great job filling the time, they managed to have quite a few surprises in there too.

I do feel a bit like I know what the TCGS guys will be saying in theirs as they’ve talked about loads in their “what you been playing?” section but the extra time since the last episode should allow for some curveballs hopefully.
