I'd take a freeze with a pinch of salt, however annoying. It's more red-light failures I'm musing over. Unfortunately my 3rd machine is an october 05, so I'm half expecting it to pack in at some point.

edit - what manufacturing date madkiwi, out of interest?

What's that you say? Worked with not a single problem since launch? And has literally, from nowhere, stopped working and showing 3 red lights!

Bunch of arse...

The only problems I’ve ever had with consoles have been with the original Xbox (I’ve got a launch US one, and it’s piece of shit Thompson drive takes hours to read discs, I had to mod it just so I could transfer the games to the hard-drive to play them!) and now this….

I havent had any prolems since I bought the console. But recentely my disk tray sometimes doesnt open when i turn the console on by the eject button. Also it has crashed a few times only twice on prey and oblivion. But I heard it sometimes crashes on oblivion.

Anyone else had the disktray problem.

The very same thing happened to me the other day. I've had to send the bugger back and what a pain in the ass.

  • 2 weeks later...

Im not getting any of the dreaded red lights of doom and I have a launch machine. Been using it without any problems whatsoever until today. Whenever I play Enchanted Arms it has a tendancy to freeze at random moments. Only a complete restart fixes it. Is this the end of my 360 or is the game faulty?

i'd swap it while in the 1st year of being on sale, cos it'l get worse. certain games expose duff machines more than others.

But will they take it back? It hasnt done the red rings and only seems to do it with the one game. Also if i do return it should I keep hold of the HD?

shops are supposed to guarantee for a year but dont advertise it. gamestation sent an email round saying we do this, but dont tell anyone

id just be worried cos mine froze all the wya through quake 4 until i got a new one, which doesnt freeze. mine also froze on the splash screen. all i mean by 1st year is that MS are a bit more lax about it because they know every machine out there is still under guarantee - if you choose that route. up to you.

I almost made it a month longer that you.

Complete bugger of course. So do Game really swap them then? I take it that I'll have to argue the point with the staff.

Is the build quality any better now? If I send it back to MS will it have to include the hard drive?

Yep, GAME swapped mine for a brand new machine without even checking it or arguing, was in and out in 10 minutes max. Speak to the manager rather than the zombie staff though.

They didn't want anything bar the actual console either (no HD, PSU etc.).

It's more than a year. If the item doesn't survive for a reasonable time (which varies from item to item, but something like 4-5 years seems reasonable for a £300 console), then the store should replace it. Microsoft have their own one-year warranty, but that's seperate from the Sale of Goods.

Was on the phone for an hour to Xbox 360 support. The American I was speaking to couldnt understand me. I had to practically spell every word. Hell I dont have a thick accent! Luckily I dont have to send the HD back afterall according to the guy. Just a shame I have to wait so long when I have all these new games to play

dont be daft, they want extra cash fo your basic rights. listen to alex he might be right. i hope he is.

But he doesnt know for definite. I do know that for the sake of £50 if my 360 died again after December (when the 12 month warranty runs out) I would be gutted having to pay 3 times that just for repair. Consumer rights are always different for electronics goods so I would love to hear from someone who knows for sure.

i thought it was 60 quid.

Oh wait its £59. I didnt really take notice of the leaflet. But still not a bad deal if its the only way of getting it fixed, plus its supposed to be an almost immediate turnaround and seperate support number. Average cost for a repair is £140 otherwise and seeing as 360's seem to be failing all the time its probably a good thing.

However if this 12 month warranty is really 3 years and they arent telling then its a complete bunch of arse

It's pretty much accepted that a non-portable device should last 6 years, but the store doesn't have to replace it they are required to repair or replace so long as you have proof of purchase and even then they have the right to have it inspected by an electrician, a major chain of stores wont repair an item they still stock tho as its to much hassle.

With things like this you really need to insist and show them that you know what you're talking about as even managers will try and fob you off at first but as soon as you mention the sales of goods act they shit themselves.
