Just got my brand new replacement Xbox 360 back from Game (for those keeping score this is a replacement for another replacement that was broken) and switched it on to be greeted by the red lights of death straight away.

Bloke in Game when I took back in the second broken one said that the amount of 360 returns they get is phenomenal.

.::: Jesus H. F*cking Christ on a cross on fire!

Finally received my Xbox 360 one week later than I was told. I unpack the thing start to connect the cables and note that:

1] The plug to the AC adapter doesn't 'snap' in anymore.

2] The Wireless Adapter doesn't 'snap' in as well and almost instantly falls out were it not for the USB plug inserted.

3] The casing seemingly can come off at anytime.

4] Something inside is making a noise as I move the Xbox 360.

Already annoyed at this I boot the thing and it leads me through some settings to reattach it to Xbox Live. After that it detects the new update so OK, let's get that rolling. It installs, reboots and then...

In-f*cking-credible. I didn't even get to test if it played a game! So tomorrow I can phone them again, as they didn't pick up tonight for half an hour, so I can send them the Xbox 360 again, and I can wait for three weeks again, so I may be able to finally enjoy the f*cking machine and be able to actually do some work! Really this wouldn't bug me half as much, if I didn't need the damned thing to review games!

I'M PISSED.

That's exactly what happened with my brand new replacement five minutes out of the box. There are reports that the update is destroying machines with a certain DVD drive, in which case I probably run an equal chance of this happening again tomorrow if Game will give me a fourth exhange.

The failure rate is breathtaking. Can measures be taken against a company flogging stuff with such a high failure rate?

.::: This is truly incredible, at this rate the Xbox 360 may sell out during Christmas on repairs alone! And I'm actually afraid that might not be a joke!

i bought a 360 in japan and when I got back to the uk it had the 3 red lights going on. Took it inot goma knowing they wouldnt be able to tell it wasnt the one i bought from them and they swapped it over for a new sealed 360 premium. Got it home, opened it up and it had a manfacture date of march 06 and scratch marks on the casing. Within 5 mins it had 3 red lights.

I think MS are sending out 'fixed' models you know

.::: Of course they are. Refurbishing is what every console-manufacturer has done. But in the case of MS this isn't working as planned. I really dread to think what an even more complex console like the PlayStation 3 will unleash. No f*cking way I'll buy that thing at launch even if I had the money.

For those into the Dutch language I've regurgitated my problems at the blog I write for:

Still no sign of a replacememt for you then Cyhwuhx?

Mines getting picked up tomorrow - Judging by this thread I'm unlikely to get one back before Gears Of War,

Stayed on long enough yesterday to allow the update to the dash,

Not seen it crash since - make of that what you will :) (it's still going for repair).

Mine's still possibly knackered. Still works after the update, but it kept freezing playing PD0 a while back. I hadn't played it since then, except a very brief go on Oblivion, but I've just completed Condemned, and had no problems at all. Perhaps I have a dodgy PD0 disc. Or perhaps the machine is going to die when it plays something slightly demanding. It could go either way.

Either way, I have no faith in the design or build quality of the machine. If a game I really care about comes out, the worrying about imminent red lights will take some of the fun out of it. Then again, I'll soon have the Wii to fall back on, so sod it, I don't really care that much.

The only problem I've had is the occasional reboot required to clear a distorted picture coming through (kind of fuzzy).

Seems to happen randomly. Really annoying if I'm in the middle of a live session.

Apart from that, it's been fine.

i'm dreading getting mine back after reading the last couple of pages ... it took them over three weeks to fix and return, and by the looks there's a chance the update will cause it to crash. i've received four games in the mail while waiting for it to be fixed, so needless to say i'm going to be mighty pissed if it doesn't work, or fails shortly.

Still working...

Can you tell us how you use your working 360?

SD/HD?

Core/Premium?

Horizontal/vertical?

Rarely/Frequently?

always plugged into the internet/rarely plugged into the internet.

I am keen to know, as I very much doubt that this many 360 are simply pants when they leave the factory, it must be some combination of using it etc that knackers them.

Will let you know how my replacement 360 performs when I get it this afternoon.

More confirmation that the update will destroy a brand new Xbox 360. I'd imagine it's something to do with it going wonky because you haven't got the previous dash update.

http://forum.teamxbox.com/showthread.php?t...169&page=12 (look at Page 12 onwards)

Seriously if you're buying a new one today (or getting a repaired unit back) don't plug it into Xbox Live until there's some indication they've fixed this.

ie. do 360s last longer under certain conditions?

Both my 360s pumped out 720p from the moment they where bought until they died (3 months and 6 months respectively). In both cases whis was over VGA (and 5.1 surround sound)

I think there is a strong correlation between the number of people on here that use High Def and the number of faulty units we are seeing here.

I've had no problems with my launch model at all, touch wood.

It sits horizontally in an Ikea Oppli bench, with the brick on the floor behind. Never had it vertical at all.

I was running via scart on an SD tv, then I got my new one, so now run at 1360 x 768 over vga.

I also use 5.1 sound.

.::: Well just got off the phone concerning the 1/4 Ring of Red on my repaired model and it's going straight back again. He told me E71 is unsolvable without repairs, so if you ever get one you're probably just as screwed.

I tried to imply the system update might have something to do with it, as it crashed directly after that. And while there was some hesitation at the other side the guy did say he'd forward my question to another department, and I would be contacted if that would be the case.

So another 15 days down the drain. Sorry guys, the chances I will be around during GoW-launch is extremely unlikely. :)

[edit] For those inclined, my 'new' Xbox 360 had a manufacturing date of "2006-01-18". My first one was a launch model.

That's outrageous. And yes, it seems to have something to do with the update; just check the XBox fora all over the world. It seems the majority of the newer 360 can't handle the update.

I swear, if my new 360 bites the dust, I'll fucking kill that MS.

.::: Your tale is even worse in that respect.

I got my 360 a month ago and the update doesnt seem to have killed mine...

Although having said that I havent actualy played any games since I updated, I just looked through the menus and watched some videos.

Don't be silly.

Your fuses would go.

I am silly :)

I got mine replaced a couple of weeks ago, the update hasn't killed my new one.

Presumably if you've had it for a month then you;d already have had the previous update?

That would appear to be the case. So if you've got a brand new machine then don't connect to Live until this is sorted. They better get it fixed before Gears comes out. That game is going to sell a lot of consoles.

.::: One colleague phoned MS, but they didn't know anything yet. A few minutes ago yet another colleague is phoned by Microsoft to get his serial number (his Xbox 360 is unaffected by the update install).

It seems Microsoft are now starting to track down which batch is failing and have at least in some form acknowledged the problem.
