Anyone updated a July '06 model?

I'm not sure I want to initiate the update when I get home tonight...

If you already have the previous dash update then you should be safe enough. If it's still factory settings then I wouldn't let it anywhere near the update though.

.::: Yup, I've seen this confirmed now at numerous places. If the Big One will be the first update for that particular Xbox 360, don't do it. That's the rule of thumb it seems.

Has this been officially recognised by Microsoft as an issue?

Surely they should be announcing something by now...

My replacement is a July model obtained in late September. It has accepted the update without problem *touches wood* I dont recall when the last full update was, surely before this?

I too bought mine in September. As soon as it was hooked up to LIVE it requested the last update.

Hopefully this new one will be accepted with no problems...

If I refused to install can I still utilize LIVE or is it a compulsory update?

I assume that I may have to remove my ethernet cable in order to do this.

I don't recall the messages on screen during the previous update.

Still no official word from MS on this? Reading round the xbox forums around the world it seems this is far from being a minor hitch.

Think of all the little kids all over the world who were expecting a PS3 for xmas, but making do with a 360, plugging it in and in 5 minutes finding their shiny new xmas present is a paper weight. Microsoft will be the grinch that stole christmas!!

Unless they sort it out and get it fixed, sharpish.

Well they'll have to otherwise the ensuing shitstorm would eclipse giant crabs and broken hinges. The only reason we haven't heard that much about it yet is because it's only effecting those who bought one yesterday, and of those only those who connected it to Live and then only those who bothered to report it online instead of just assuming they got a plain duff one, the majority of people posting on forums would have applied it to a unit that already had the previous update. It does boggle the mind that something like this could happen in the first place

Anyone fancy submitting it as news to Eurogamer or someone? ;)

This update nealy killed my 360. It's a launch day console, and has received all the previous updates.

After yesterday's update it kept locking / freezing with that 360 logo thing stuck mid flight. At one point it had 3 flashing red lights.

I unplugged it, waited, then it worked, and has done since.

This thread's incredible.

I feel as though I'm almost lucky to think mine's crashed on me a couple of dozen times over the last year, and I've not had to play the returns game two or three times over with my unit.

Same here, apart from the crashes. My launch 360 never crashed on me except for once when I cut the power briefly. And it isn't very noisy either which also seems to be quite unique.

As I said before, every time this thread gets bumped to the top, I feel like I'm playing a time bomb ;)

Can the previous firmware updates be downloaded and installed offline?

I read someone say that PES made them install some update before they could play, so maybe.

Bet we won't hear Major Nelson mention a peep about this, we'll get "Wooooh hey guys you can now pay cash money to download some virtual cards with Kameo characters on!" but never a warning that if you buy a new Xbox 360 from yesterday onwards it will get terminal console cancer the first time you connect it the system's selling point. ;)

Was thinking about picking up a 360 on the weekend...but this thread scares me.

Do people think the problems with the 360 are a characteristic of next gen consoles and the huge amount of technology they pack....or is the 360 just flawed in some way?

November has barely begun but Microsoft has seemingly already won the Screw-up of the Month award. Yesterday’s big Fall Dashboard Update does a lot of good things to your 360, like 1080p support and WMV streaming. And it does some bad things, like reducing a lot of Xbox 360s to 4kg paperweights.

Update 13:29: Xbox Support is currently stating if you call them that a fix should be out within 2 days to solve the problems. For possible resolutions they’re suggesting meanwhile check this forumpost. Still no official word from Microsoft via the regular channels.

As our Dutch friends at Fok! Games have discovered, there seems to be a fatal error in the latest update causing recently purchased or replaced Xbox 360s to die on their owners (translated and summarized for your reading pleasure):

When you do the following with your new Xbox 360 you will be getting a fatal and permanent “System Error”. That means you should not do this!

Boot the console.

Select the language.

Select “I am a member of Xbox Live”

Mandatory dashboard update will download and install.

The system will reboot and show the 360 logo.

You’ll get “System Error E71″.

When you get this error the 360 is dead and cannot be revived anymore: you will need to take it back to your store for replacement or contact Xbox Customer Support.

The administrator of Dutch games site Insidegamer has reported this happening to his own 360, but the complaints are found on many forums such as the TeamXbox forums. Until more news is released on this from Microsoft, we suggest using an offline profile if you’ve bought your 360 recently and haven’t connected it to Live before.

Er... Bit confused about all of this.

I was gonna get my XBox 360 (new) this week, will I be affected by any of this malarkey?

Can I do anything to ensure my console will work?

Would be really disappointing.

.::: Until Microsoft says otherwise, do not connect it to Xbox Live.

Sounds like me on sunday.

Really? I'm not sure if I'm insanely paranoid or not. It just happened again. Thats 4 times today, but only when the 360 has been on. The phone went off, as did the 360, as did my router (PC didn't though, oddly), lights dipped too, but only in this room. Surely not related to the console.... :D:P;)

Well it sounds a bit suspicious!

I'd unplug everything if you go out mate. Does the 360 have 'that' cigarette smoke smell?
