why didnt you just take it back to the shop?

.::: In the Netherlands, the shops will only accept that within two weeks of purchase. Everything outside of those two weeks is Microsoft's business and they will not help you with it.

Vince, send them a poederbrief ;)

.::: I want compensation and a working Xbox 360. Not to become a nice mantelpiece to fight over during the elections. :o

.::: CRAP!

Didn't get my label-email to send my second Xbox 360 back, so I phoned them. Got a dual-language German guy who told me they are understaffed for the Netherlands. It seems that 'less than 1%' is causing problems at Customer Service.

So now, I must wait FOUR DAYS for the email to arrive, after which I can make an appointment with UPS for the next day to pick it up, then have to wait for it to be delivered at the repair center and then start waiting up to 15 days days for actual repairs/swapage. Which I'm sure will go way over that time because of their update foul-up.

In other words: I think I'm playing on my Wii sooner than I might be playing my own copy of Gears of War!

The honeymoon is officially over.

I told them I didn't have a printer so they sent the label with the UPS driver when he came to pick the 360 up.

May be worth a try for you as well, should knock the days off waiting for the label at least.

(If you can get through to customer services - engaged tone all morning for me ;) )

I never got an E-mail allowing me to contact UPS for a pickup date,

UPS just turned up on Tuesday, pushed the label through the door and left me a note asking to contact them for details of when to pick it up.

When I rang to arrange yesterdays pickup, UPS asked why I was not in on Tuesday when they first called ;)

Don't say that. I'm hoping to get a (working ;) ) console back before then.

Has anyone with a new 360 actually tried the updated update? I'm getting a 360 tomorrow and I'd like to be sure this one doesn't cause a meltdown :P

I picked up my new box this evening and the update process seemed to go alright.

Why does migrating your account over take so bloody long though, it's only 3mb or something yet it took ages on a 2mb connection.

Has anyone had a console come back from repair and then have no further problems?

I didn't bother sending mine back to MS as it's my right as a consumer to get a new one rather than a repair within the first 12months. However if you do this the digital rights management for the downloaded content becomes an issue and you have to send both receipts back to MS and then it takes them 2 months to get you out enough points codes to re-load the stuff under a silver account gamertag. Hasslesome but better than accepting some repair hash job from a 10 year old child in Guangdong.

Oh and as for the ventilation issue mine was on a shelf with more than enough space in front, on top and behind of it and my room is kept pretty much dust free because of my asthma yet the bugger still packed up. It has nothing to do with early firmware issues it has something to do with the shocking build quality of the unit and it's components.

Oh what I would give for some sound-proofing and a built in hard-drive on this, the 'Moby Dick' of consoles.

MS said they were going to send me MotoGP to compensate for the problems, but today in the post there were £50 GAME vouchers instead.. result!

Now to spend them on a PSP and DS game

My launchday 360 seems to have been killed by the update I received last week. So, I took it back to Game and they replaced it there and then. Wonderful.

So, where is the update stored, on the harddrive? I still have my original harddrive. Is the update on there?

Will it be ok to connect this new 360 to my original harddrive, or will this simply kill my new one too?

.::: The update is stored on the console itself as it replaces the firmware, I believe.

So, it should be safe to connect up my new 360 with the old harddrive.

Can any one else confirm this, to stop me breaking my new 360!

(I was very impressed by Game, by how easily they let me exchange my broken 360 for a new one!)

Well, after sporadic lock-ups, mine just gave me the dreaded red lights, 1, 3, and 4 I believe, which signifies a general hardware failure. Is it worth trying the recommendations on the internet to resolve this, or just getting shot of the console asap? And, if the latter, what steps do I need to take to get MS to come and pick it up? ( Box is in the attic )

.::: Phone up MS CS (although at the moment it's hell on earth there with all the problems) and they'll tell you exactly what to do.

Are they flashing? That means a temporary hardware problem. Mine flashed. Then I unplugged it and waited and all was fine for two days. Then they wouldn't stop flashing. It seems I had a permanent temporary hardware failure.

But that's a new patch, not a correction to the original patch. My wory is that my harddrive has the original patch information.

.::: That would mean you can boot the Xbox 360 without the HDD and get it to work. Which you can try yourself. Not that it matters as it'll display E71 anyway. And another thing: I had my original HDD as I got my replacement and it started as being a maiden Xbox 360 without any patches which worked fine in those few minutes, leading me to believe the HDD has nothing to do with what kind of updates are downloaded.

Well lets face it they have had plenty of practice by now :) Still, its a good arguement for buying new high tech hardware from a high street store rather than importing or using t'interweb.

I see that Game Oxford Street is selling pre-owned cores for £150 or so with 12 month guarantees - presumably stock which has gone back to MS. Wonder what repair will cost after the guarantee expires.

So what kind of info do I need handy when I call up the helpline, any specific sort of proof of purchase?

Plus, will not sending the HDD back with the 360 affect the service in any way? After hearing they just replace it with a new HDD there's no way I'm giving up all my saves.

Thanks for the help!

The one major problem you may have is the same as the one I with my seperately bought HDD. I took the console back to Gamestation, kept the HDD back and then when I linked it with my new console any premium or downloaded contenthad to be re-bought to play it offline under a silver account to show that the content's digital rights management is linked to the consoles serial number and the hard drive serial number. So you'll probably have to send copies of the receipts off to show Microsoft that you have to show the exchange and original sale for them to give you enough codes for MS Points to reload it all.

Took them two months to do this for me just so you know. Ahh the wonders of content digital rights management.

All I've needed is my personal details (name, address etc) and the serial number of the 360. They specifically said only to return the base unit, no cables, HDD or power pack.

Grabbed a machine from Argos today and it had the 3 lights od death as soon as it was turned on. I reseated the cables and it was fine for 15mins or so and then did it twice in 2 minutes. Console was made in June.

Took it back an hour later and got it swapped. This time it was a much newer machine, made in September, and had a different box (no handle, and updated back and side panels). My dad picked up a machine for himself at the same time and got a newer machine too.

Seems there is still some old stock out there. The first one was 5months old!
