Under Defeat (DC)

My copy arrived last night......i'm rather impressed.

The explosions are fantastic - better then anything ever seen.

As mentioned its a kinda cross between Raystorm's Psuedo 3Dism, and Z. Gunner 2 but it feels much unlike any other shooter.

In fact, it feels a bit like playing Sega's Thunderblade 2D sections at times. Really kinda Chunky

I think the scoring system is quite good. Using vulcan enables the most combo's to be scored (well x2), cannon is slower, and Rocket is just fantastic. Slow, but when it hits.... and don't get me started on The "Apocolypse Now" styled napalm smart bomb.

Sure's there some bullet issues (as usual!) but i'm guessing it would be quite easy if they were anything other then yellow as i find the patterns quite slow sometimes.

I'll post a hi-score thread for this methinks...

The other feature is the boss deaths....

Its like they took one look at Gradius V and Ikaruga and said...

"hey Treasure......fuck you....this is how to kill a boss!"

Truly fantastic. As anyone knows one of the great things i've mentioned in the past is how massively impressive bosses just die like whimps with the same sprites either expanded or multiplied all over the place (of if your Sega, lets make the boss flicker like mad and add some sprites!).

But in this....wow...the heli crash, and the battleship....geeeze.

They should call this game "Dresden!"*

*aplogies to German rllmukers.....i was going to say "Luton" but that wasn't bombed.

(nor does it have the same ring to it)

Mine arrived just now and it's bloody lovely so far, from the explosions to the music (muzak?) and there is something brill about 2d games with 3d graphics! I find reverse control easier too.

One thing that I am cursed with is a flippable monitor that flips clockwise so games like Ikaruga and under defeat would be upside down in tate mode! it's utterly infuriating and if anyone can think of a way around this without putting my monitor up on bricks or taking it apart wins a . . . . pat on the back. Perhaps some software to route the DC through the PC graphics card?

LOL...i bought my PC Viewsonic LCD with the intention of using the portrait mode for Ikaruga and all the other 2d tate shooters...

You can imagine how i felt when i first tried Ikaruga.... :) ..it took ALOT of willpower not to put my fist through the screen.

What I did was take the stand off and buy a seperate monitor arm for the wall that could be rotated either way :)

You can get desk mounted replacement arms that do this too..

LOVING this game now - I'm not a great shmup player in terms of skill, but I think I just clicked with the game as I cruised through level 4 (first time getting there - on my last life) without dying at all :D

Of course level 5 toasted me pretty much as soon as the sound effects came back...

Great start to the level..

That's exactly what I thought when I bought my viewsonic too- are we the same person?

I might look into these desk mounted arms. Psyvariar 2 has Tate modes in either direction, but I don't find that one any fun. Sod's law.

I just googled for 'vesa lcd arm rotate portrait' and got lots of links to ones that should be fine...

If your monitor detatches quite easily (and the base is tall enough) - you might be able to reattach it rotated...

IIRC the 4 holding screws are the same distance apart in a square - but that's a bit too much hassle possibly..

Actually - brainwave here...

Can't you just detach the monitor, rotate the VESA plate 90 degrees and then attach the monitor back horizontally (with the plate still rotated) - then when that rotates back - the monitor should be the other way up...

If you see what I mean...

I'll look at my monitor later to see if I can do this. If I can then I'll be forever grateful!

any one having difficulties get the 'Arrange' BGM to work?

I thought it sounded just a little differnt, like a re-recording if you will, but I could have imagined the whole thing.

I got my monitor rigged up to flip the other way, and it was very easy and I am a happy man. Proper Tate mode Ikaruga and Under Defeat! :(

My limited edition pack arrived today, the music CD that comes with it has two versions of the tunes for the five levels (plus a wierd medley). The first set of tracks is labeled "Guest Guitar" and is more or less the same as the games main tunes except it goes into a spazzy guitar riff on the second loop of the music. I think this is the same as the arranged music in the main game. The actual arranged tunes are much more interesting - the various tunes (a few level and boss tunes) are interpreted in different styles. The first level song is an awesome synth arrangement, and the second level track is a nice lounge interpretation.

As you'd imagine the originals are still the best, but it's interesting all the same!

  • 2 weeks later...

Geez, there is some right shite for the first couple of pages of this thread. Sort it out chaps.

Anyway, the game. A mate of mine got it the other week and was saying it was rather good so I thought I'd give it a try. Not really impressed myself. Although the graphics are undeniably good, the whole military theme of things seems extremely dull and tired to me. I'd much prefer something more interesting and original.

The game itself hasn't grabbed me yet either. It doesn't feel that exciting and I'm not sure I understand the weapon system properly, although Willei's posts have helped. The music was pretty good though. So yeah, average again. Glad I didn't buy a copy.

My copy finally arrived, no idea why it took so long (got taxed but the postie never asked for it).

Really enjoying it. The hit box seems larger than I am used to (although reading back throught the topic) it might just be the placement. It is taking a while getting used to angling the chopper but it certanly makes it feel very different to other recent shooters. When it starts moving horizontally or diagonally you really have to make use of it. I certainlly disagree with with the comments above about it being dull and average.
