Can we have a January missed out on the January CD Mix Club Club?

Just send me a CD 'cos you love me so much. At least if we had that thread, those that are 'in' could point and laugh*. I'll post my mini-mix towards the end of the month anyway. Nobody is gonna be interested in the other crap I put on the CD.

*3 day ban.

Mine has now been posted to Holly. :(

Received thankyou! Haven't managed to listen to much of it yet but am liking it so far.

For the curious, it's entitled Commercialism and consists entirely of tunes used in adverts. Royksopp, Rob Dougan and Telepopmusik so far... and all stuff I like but have never really listened to much, which is always good for a mix CD -_- Anyway, I'll give it a proper listen to in the week and give you proper feedback.

Paddyo, your CD will be in the post by next weekend.

18 tracks of all kinds of stuff really. Recognised a few artists but couldn't name a track off it - this is a good thing. Really look forward to a tracklisting. My first complaint is the disjointedness (is that a word?) of it all. There are some good tracks in there but there seemed to be no flow to the album at all. Anyway, on to individual track comments:

1. Awful - music for 12 year olds.

2. Some rather dull indie sounding music

3. This was an improvement, more lively. I'm starting to like some of this style of music, whatever it's called?

4. Roots Manuva. Unexpected after the first 3 tracks. Lots of scratching. Not bad but at times he sounded like

flea.big.GIF

5. Some videogame grime style hip hop. Alright I guess.

6. Lovely piano solo piece. Nice

7. Kraftwerk - It's a bit cliche you know. Never really did anything for me. Is this live?

8. Some breaks mixed with accoustic guitar twanging. Didn't really work for me.

9. Nasty, jangly country sounding music.

10. Sounds like some old indie stuff. Didn't like this one either.

11. Or this one, sorry. This was dull accoustic guitar strumming and pub singing.

12. More one man and his guitar style folk music. Really don't like this stuff.

13. Some banjo and beats mixture. Didn't like it.

14. Some electronic sounding indie, better. Quite mellow and soothing. Builds nicely.

15. One of the highlights. Some big band, swinging crooner style action. Excellent.

16. Sounds like Tom Yorke. Doesn't seem like a Radiohead song though. I quite liked it, especially the backing vocals in the chorus. Couldn't work out exactly what he was singing about though, was it disco or something?

17. Some more indie stuffs. Average.

18. And some more man+guitar stuffs........

Hit and miss then really. Some nice bits hidden amongst a fair amount of rubbish (to my ears). Thanks for sending it anyway. Nice cover. Look forward to the tracklisting.

:D The originators.

9. Nasty, jangly country sounding music.

^_^ Fantastic song, from an inform Belle & Sebastian. You should give Sukie In The Graveyard a listen, it's a bit more funky.

Feeback for you Mr Do!

This is the kind of ambient stuff I like working to, I expect theres a few Mogwai, Board of Canada et al in here but I don't know enough of this stuff to pinpoint it.

1. Lovely opening track, I had just opened the window in the morning and could hear the birds singing, when I started the CD I had to pause it to see where the extra sound was coming from. Although the pidgeon talking is fairly scary.

2. A nice thud going through this track.

3. I know this one! Hey Saturday Sun - Boards of Canada. Great track, almost rocking.

4. Love the way this track builds, fades and then the last few 10 seconds or so are silence.

5. An interesting mix of space sounds and jazzy noodling, couldn't quite take itseriously

6. Like the motif repeated through this one

7. Organ space music, a little bland maybe.

8. Very warm and emotional sounding, my room was a bit cold and I had put the central heating on and it seemed to kick it with this song. Domestic bliss!

9. Maybe Brian Eno? I LOVE his pop stuff and have bought a few of the ambient albums but never really listened to them. I think this CD will make me dig them out.

10. Very relaxing and slightly dark.

11. A bit too plinky and long.

12. Liked the scratchy beats and organ.

13. Eno - An Ending (Ascent). The master! Definitely my favorite Ambient track. I got a bit overexcited as Itunes said this track was 14 mins long so I thought it was a special long version.

14. A reprise of the first track, the pidgeon still scares me but he's an old friend now.

Thanks Mr Do, I really enjoyed it, once you give me the listing I'll be exploring these

ambient types.

I wonder if that Maria track I put on my CD killed ojlim?

LOL, it killed me, but not for the reasons you might be lead to believe. I'm actually quite fond of We Belong Together, but mixed with that banging beat... I think my brain exploded.

So re: your CD... the first half, most of it was a bit too much for me. I like my electronica to be a bit more melodic - leaning towards Disco/French house, so most of it was a bit too hard for my liking. I did like the first track though and there was one song with quite a nice American female singer... I think it was track 7... Tracking treasure down...

Placebo bleh.

Track 8, with that Elizabeth Fraser/Kate Bush esque singer was nice and ethereal. Was Track 9 from Area 5 of Rez? Sounds awfully familiar.

Then there were a bunch of (presumably) video game soundtrack songs from RPGs I haven't played. Funny, I'm sure I'd recognise them if I'd played the games. Like, I'll always remember the Dragon Quest VIII overworld theme until I go to my grave, but it's always associated with the green fields and blue skies.

So overall, it was quite an interesting mix. Mostly stuff I wouldn't usually listen to, so it's nice to hear something a little different.

And ending with the Zelda theme tune was a cute touch. The cheap midi-ness of some of these old SNES (or N64?) tunes really sticks out on mix CDs though. The must be some lush orchestral versions of these songs somewhere.

Cool.

I'm a bit of a closet Maria fan to be honest. That track is a belter, really really good. It HAD to go in my mini mix.

I kind of apologise for not making it longer to be honest, a bit more polished. I just got bored really and on listening to it thought that will do. I'll stick the track list up later.

The second half of the CD is ALL from game endings. It intended to do the whole CD like this but couldn't think of any more that I really like :) Other than Zelda, there aren't any RPGs, iirc. I went with game endings 'cos, well, I complete a lot of stuff and often it makes the ending that much more memorable when the end music stands out like those on the CD. Obviously, music affects different people in different ways and the idea here was to maybe entice the listener into sharing that experience even if they haven't touched the game before. I often get a bit mushy reminiscing in the nostalgic memories of a video game ending so dumping these to disc felt like a pretty good way to put this across.

I kind of wished I'd done two CDs and tidy it up a bit but, well, there you go :(

Like I say, track list up in a bit. Track 8 is probably the Panzer Dragoon Orta ending. Track 9 being the 'Free' music from Rez's ending, with the butterflies (check www.game-endings.co.uk). Starfox was in there and so to was Zelda Ocarina of Time. Oh, Metroid Prime was the other ;)

Hah hah. Actually a minute after I say that I've posted it.

Here you go scribbles!

01 <_< Ok, the opening track is not really my cup of tea. It starts of quite nicely, building with the

piano for over half the song. But then it just gets a bit too rock, and it doesn't do anything for me (well

the ending anyway). At least it was instrumental though, and in a way reminded me of DJ Shadow trying

to do a rock track.

02  But this I hate. I don't like the way the vocals are sung, it not the kind of rock I like. It just do

anything for me.

03 :) This though has a bit more jolly feel to it, nice guitar and some interesting beats going on. Plus it's

another instrumental, and no silly vocals getting in the way. Lovely in every way, and a sudden but nice

ending.

04. :D We get electronic for this track, quite glitchy but a rather nice first two minute intro. Then it

kicks in, with some lovely synths and it's still building nicely. The tempo increases, the track keeps

building with some interesting electronics going on. Then it ends in a mess of electronics and some

glitchy noises fading away into the distance. Excellent!

05 :D Imagine Sade making her smooth music today, this is what this track reminds me of. Smooth,

lush song with some lush vocals. I like!

06. :( But then we're back to the feel of the first two tracks, with some annoying vocals and tribal beats.

Is this the Death In Vegas track, it's ok. But I'd probably prefer a instrumental mix of this.

07. :D Awesome! It's Jesus Christ himself :D Got this lovely track, and the lush album, top marks for

this.

08. :) More electronics, and opening clicks remind me of Aphex Twin's Heliosphan track. But this soon

kicks in big time, and it's like a mix of a drum & bass track and hardcore with added glitch edits.

Around the 4m 30s into this track, it really fucking kicks :D But like most tracks like this, the sexy parts

only last a minute or so. Anyway it ain't crap, so gets a smile award.

09. :) Short 2m instrumental track, but with a more ravetastic sound. The opening reminds a bit of

another song, but I can't remember which. This is nice enough though, for a filler track. Nice.

10. :D This is quite interesting though, it almost got that gay-disco beat ( ) about it. It's got

some weird vocals, a great beat and some european sounding synth sounds. Definitely one for the

dancefloor, played nice and loud with the bass turned up. I'd dance to this, just not in a gay club!

Superb.

11. :( An ok kinda track, just not that great. Imagine a ZZ-Top type track, given a slight dance remix

treatment. I just want to go back, and play track 10 again.

12. So I'm not really going to like this last track either, and this really isn't what I want to listen to.

It's quite a weird rock/electronic musical track, with some strange stuff going on in the background.

Give me track 10 again!
