January Cd Mix Club

Recommended Posts

Received mine this morning, I'll post feedback soon enough, thanks.

Was working on a mixed CD for this month but haven't been able to get all the tracks I'm looking for so I'm gonna do something a bit different. Have a few different mixes in my head atm and I've got loads of time to work on them, so I should have something to send out within the next few days.

I got my CD last night and listened to it this morning. I suspect the first two tracks were a deliberate attempt to put me off as they're completely different to the rest!

1. american, slim chance of it being the chilli peppers. don't like it.

2. 80s, human league sort of sound

3. the prodigy - your love

4. something sort of industrial and a bit familiar

5. i definitely know this but i can't ID it. lovely, warm dubby techno anyway. deepchord or basic channel or afx are my three best guesses

6. boards of canada type noises but not sure it's them. doesn't really go anywhere

7. sort of interesting choral synth pop, but no idea what it is

8. vibrant and housey. quite long, though, and doesn't really evolve after it gets going

9. quiet and jazzy. nice.

10. stevie wonder? piano, anyway.

11. funky instrumental

12. quite jolly electro. probably not kraftwerk

13. awesome synth cover of Thriller. love the flourish at the end. was that a c64 chip version or something?

14. no idea but it definitely sounded like a suitable ending tune

So thanks, mystery sender. I will get mine out this week, all going well.

No real theme this month, just a selection of my favourite tunes from over the holiday period. Sorry about the openers, I've been hammering both artists albums while I've been at home doing coursework. Loving the power pop style guitar/dance music. I've been a fan of The Prodigy for ages, Charly was my first 12" single and Your Love was the b-side. I thought it still sounded so fresh after getting remastered for the singles compilation that I got for Xmas. Tracks 5 & 6 were on my September cd but I'm still loving them both so they got another airing. Kelley Polar is a new artist I found. A classically trained violinist who has moved into the electronic scene via Metro Area's Morgan Geist. It's a lovely, lovely album. Diabla is just awesome, thought you'd know that one already. Mr.V is courtesy of cubeadvance and his beautiful ame profonde deep house mixes. Thriller is an amazing piece of work, I love that old chip tune sound. The track was grabbed from http://virt.vgmix.com/index.php?page=chip which was linked in the retro folder a while back, some of his other work isn't too shabby either. That Bliss tune is also amazing, I originally heard it the soundtrack to the Netlag video at http://www.pleix.net/films.html although the video is nothing special. Eventually found an mp3 of it but was going to include the video on the cd. But seeing as I didn't there was a bit of extra space for the newly found remix of Remind Me. I heard it on Jaques Lu Cont's Fabric cd and thought it was ace! I had planned on including a Jan 05 bonus cd from last year as I thought it still sounded pretty fresh but I have a feeling you got a copy of that in exchange for the brilliant Titan cd you gave me. Oh well.

Hope you enjoyed most of it? Your comments seem more descriptive than opinionated......

I mostly liked it, yeah!

The opening tracks - I dunno, they just seem like perfect examples of new(?) bands sounding exactly like old music. I know someone who really rates VHS or Beta but that track just sounded like it could have been recorded in 1986. Anyway...

That singles collection has certainly completely revived my love for the Prodigy too, not to mention via that Voodoo People remix and a bit of prodding from other CD mix clubs, getting me into Pendulum as well. I thought iTunes had gone back to random play when it came on after the opening tracks, actually!

The Andy Stott track, I are such a dumbarse for not clocking it, especially since I got it off you in the first place! Still love it.

Diabla has a great sound, and I definitely haven't explored Funk D'Void enough, but I think it would have made more impact at half the length. I was a bit bored of it after 8 minutes, to be honest.

The rest of it was all pretty good - I will listen to it through again on the way home tonight I think. So thanks again!

Cool man glad you liked it. I've only just started hearing this dance based indie music (for want of a better term) through a mate of mine at uni. It seems quite hit and miss but a few bits here and there I really like. Never heard it all the first time round you see.

I can't say I see the fuss about Pendulum, the Voodoo remix was indeed fantastic and I liked Slam for a while but everything else I've heard seems rather average. As for Funk D'void, I can highly recommend his Volume Freak album. A nice selection of melodic house and techno, some good vocal tracks and a general warmth and feeling about it all that seems lacking these days. Let me know if you want a couple of other tracks sent over.

Cheers for the feedback.

Pendulum - I would say there are probably two or three absolutely essential tracks on the album (Hold Your Colour, Streamline and Tarantula, possibly also Sounds of Life), the rest is just "nice" but I'm glad I got it. The start of Slam is fucking wicked but it goes a bit off the boil after the first minute or so.

Funk D'Void - I'm pretty sure I have a few tracks in my lucky dip MP3 collection at home but I'll give you a shout if not.

Yay- seems to be more good than bad. :) I was going to do a really hard metal CD this month.. then I saw who would be getting it. No point sending something you wouldn't like at all.

01  Ok, the opening track is not really my cup of tea. It starts of quite nicely, building with the piano for over half the song. But then it just gets a bit too rock, and it doesn't do anything for me (well the ending anyway). At least it was instrumental though, and in a way reminded me of DJ Shadow trying to do a rock track.

01. 65DaysOfStatic - Drove Through Ghosts To Get Here [4:18]

I saw these guys live a while back.. really cool glitchy kind of sound they have. A lot more of this than you would expect is done on a drumkit. It was put into the compilation mainly for the intro though.. the way the whole thing speeds up then comes down with the piano is fairly excellent.

02  But this I hate. I don't like the way the vocals are sung, it not the kind of rock I like. It just do anything for me.

02. Patrick Wolf - The Child Catcher [4:30]

Heh. Ill advised choice. My girlfriend hates this too.. so you're not alone. ;)

03 :) This though has a bit more jolly feel to it, nice guitar and some interesting beats going on. Plus it's another instrumental, and no silly vocals getting in the way. Lovely in every way, and a sudden but nice ending.

03. Jaga Jazzist - day [3:07]

Loving these guys just now.. they played all tomorrows parties at the start of december, which is what made me check them out.The new stuff doesn't have so much of an electronic sound, but I thought you would appreaciate this more. :)

04. :D We get electronic for this track, quite glitchy but a rather nice first two minute intro. Then it kicks in, with some lovely synths and it's still building nicely. The tempo increases, the track keeps building with some interesting electronics going on. Then it ends in a mess of electronics and some glitchy noises fading away into the distance. Excellent!

04. Frog Pocket - Carac Cyls [8:29]

One of the best electronic tracks I have ever heard. Simply stunning. I've been waiting to put this on a CD for a while. Glad you love it.

05 :D Imagine Sade making her smooth music today, this is what this track reminds me of. Smooth, lush song with some lush vocals. I like!

05. Handsome Boy Modeling School - I've Been Thinking f. Cat Power [5:24]

Cat Power on guest vocals from the Handsome Boy Modeling School's latest.. amazing record.. The Mars Volta, Jack Johnson, and De La Soul guest on other tracks from it, too.

06. :( But then we're back to the feel of the first two tracks, with some annoying vocals and tribal beats.

Is this the Death In Vegas track, it's ok. But I'd probably prefer a instrumental mix of this.

06. Shitdisco - I know Kung-Fu [3:14]

I have a 'thing' for this.. even though it should be the worst thing ever. I saw them live a few weeks ago.. pretty energetic live. 2 bassists.. one of which decided he was going to just up and down on the bass drum.

07. :D Awesome! It's Jesus Christ himself :D Got this lovely track, and the lush album, top marks for this.

07. Christ. - Dianoes Nouveau [5:04]

Ex Boards of Canada, apparently. Amazing.

08. :) More electronics, and opening clicks remind me of Aphex Twin's Heliosphan track. But this soon kicks in big time, and it's like a mix of a drum & bass track and hardcore with added glitch edits.

Around the 4m 30s into this track, it really fucking kicks :D But like most tracks like this, the sexy parts only last a minute or so. Anyway it ain't crap, so gets a smile award.

08. Venetian Snares - Die Winnipeg Die Die Die Fuckers Die [7:01]

One of my all time favourite artists.. very prolific. I think it was 3 LP's he knocked out last year.. this was on one of them. I noticed BPEmpire sent you one of the tracks just after I had posted this.. don't think you liked his one.. but I'm glad you didn't hate this.

09. :) Short 2m instrumental track, but with a more ravetastic sound. The opening reminds a bit of another song, but I can't remember which. This is nice enough though, for a filler track. Nice.

09. DJ Scotch Egg - Scotch Attack [2:04]

Ravetastic? Exactly. What gameboy's were made for.

10. :D This is quite interesting though, it almost got that gay-disco beat ( :P ) about it. It's got some weird vocals, a great beat and some european sounding synth sounds. Definitely one for the dancefloor, played nice and loud with the bass turned up. I'd dance to this, just not in a gay club!

Superb.

10. Vitalic - Poney (Part 2) [5:12]

Heh. I'm not normally into stuff like this.. but I do really love OK Cowboy. (The album its taken from).

11. :( An ok kinda track, just not that great. Imagine a ZZ-Top type track, given a slight dance remix treatment. I just want to go back, and play track 10 again.

11. Death In Vegas - Aisha [5:54]

Ah well.

12. So I'm not really going to like this last track either, and this really isn't what I want to listen to.

It's quite a weird rock/electronic musical track, with some strange stuff going on in the background.

Give me track 10 again!

12. Mr. Bungle - Desert Search for Techno Allah [5:24]

I thought this one might prove too weird.. but it had to go on anyway. Mike Patton's Mr Bungle project.. and my favourite track from "Disco Volante".

Okay, feedback for mine.

Track 1

Sound a bit like a Chillis single I know and it also reminds me of a DJ Shadow track "You Can't Go Home Again". It's alright, but it reminds me of too much other stuff I've heard. The flow of the track is pretty interesting though.

Track 2

Yay, nice energetic shouty stuff. What the Hives might sound like if they had a chick singing instead.

Track 3.

Nice. I really like the Cibo Matto style vocals, this one's got a great vibe. Same band as in track 2?

Track 4

Don't like this one. The vocals more than anything else.

Track 5

It's alright. It's probably a bit boring though as I can't think of anything else to say about it.

Track 6

What are the lyrics about? My favourite track so far, good vocals, nice melodic hooks and lots of energy. Drums sound ace on this one also. Don't listen to much rock/indie myself but the stuff I usually listen to follows the loud/quiet/loud template, which is probably why I like this.

Track 7

Don't like this one, the guitar riffs and vocals are a bit rubbish.

Track 8

Nice melodic opening, but it goes downhill very fast. The vocals grate again and I felt like the track didn't really go anywhere.

Track 9

Hate this track. It sounds old and rubbish.

Track 10

Good tune, shame about the vocals.

Track 11

Yeah this one's nice. Like the breathy vocal effects.

Track 12

Nice effects on this one, I can't tell how those sounds are produced but it sounds good.

Track 13

Follows on nicely from last track. Is this by the same band as track 12? I like everything about this track, even the vocals. There's one line "And if it's not you can always start the videogame over" - I don't know what it's referring to exactly but it put a smile on my face.

Track 14

Relaxing downtempo track, with lots of subtle sounds that combine well.

Track 15

Some of the guitar riffs are nicely drawn out but the vocals sort of annoyed me at the start.

So yeah, you can probably see why most on the indie/alternative stuff I like is instrumental. I've absolutely no idea what artists are on this CD, which is cool. Favourites are tracks #2, #3, #6 & #14.

#14 is probably my favourite.

Nice to see you liked some of it Murdock, I actually had a completely different CD burnt and ready (full of pretty much all electronic music) but then scrapped it at the last minute and did the new one.

Tracklisting:

01. !!! - [!!! #06] Intensify

02. You Say Party! We Say Die! - [Hit the floor! #10] Rise

03. Love Is All - [9 Times That Same Song #02] Spinning And Scratching

04. Lipstick Killers - [Children of Nuggets: Original Artyfacts from the Second Psychedelic Era 1976-1996 #07] Hindu Gods of Love

05. Oneida and Liars - [Atheists, Reconsider #01] Rose And Licorice

06. The National - [Alligator #13] Mr. November

07. The Hold Steady - [separation Sunday #03] Your Little Hoodrat Friend

08. The Ponys - [Celebration Castle #02] Another Wound

09. Black Mountain - [black Mountain #04] No Satisfaction

10. Clap Your Hands Say Yeah! - [Clap Your Hands Say Yeah! #06] The Skin of My Yellow Country Teeth

11. Spoon - [Kill the Moonlight #04] Stay Don't Go

12. Caribou - [The Milk Of Human Kindness #01] Yeti

13. Fog - [10th Avenue Freakout #02] We're Winning

14. Laura Veirs - [Year of Meteors #01] Fire Snakes

15. Devendra Banhart - [Rejoicing In The Hands #15] Insect Eyes

I can definitely see where you're coming from with your criticisms, I was planning to put some more tracks on like the first few but decided to make it a bit more broad. You'll probably like the You Say Party! We Say Die! album if you liked Rise, I'm not so keen on the Love is All album but it's such a great single.

I didn't like the Hold Steady track at first (for the reasons you stated mainly) but I kept listening to the album and it really clicked - one of my favourite CDs of last year now, probably works better in the context of the album though.

Thanks for the comments!

Thanks.

Bet you I'd have loved the electronic CD. :)

Can't believe the first track is !!!, it sounds nothing like any of their other stuff I heard.

Re: Black Mountain, I did actually listen to some of their songs after seeing it on a best of 2005 list for a radio show I respect a lot but I thought their other stuff sounded old and shit also. :D

Any chance of an mp3 or something of this? I've got the 'Sunracapellelecroshit Mix 03' version taken from Scratch Massive's Naked mix CD and it is lush, but would like to hear the original...?

Okay, feedback for my CD... Sorry it's been a long time coming...!

1. Some sort of bootleg of The Black Eyed Peas - Let's Get Retarded... This is quite cool but lacks the punch of the only Black Eyed Peas I can be in the same room as... The Neptunes stuff is nice.

2. One of the songs from Greece mash-up with Snoop Dogg. I think my girlfriend found it funny because she loves Greece. Surprisingly this works quite nicely and anything that makes Snoop look a bit silly is probably a good thing

3. Dean Grey - Doctor Who on Holiday

Taken from the American Edit album, which I finally got around to 'procurring' a few weeks ago. Easily some of the best mach-ups I've heard. This is actually my girlfriend's favourite track on American Edit... I really like the bit with Bryan Adams but this is good too. Very professionally produced.

4. Probably my favourite track on the CD, a mash-up of loads of whistles, with the one from Kill Bill, Centerfold (J Geil's Band?) and Wind of Change proving particular favourites. Very funny. Again, my girlfriend liked it.

5. Primal Scream - Higher Than The Sun... I *think* this is a mash-up, possibly with that crazy dub track about 'Cocaine... Running around my brain' (the name escapes me)? I love Screamadelica but haven't listened to it in ages so this was a pleasent surprise.

6. Very summery laid back song that sounds like it should be the soundtrack to a holiday TV programme. Haven't got a clue what it is, but it's quite nice.

7. Again, very summery but this time with a fairly heavy, dubb-y bassline. Not sure who this is either, sounds quite similar to the track before though, and again is good.

8. Recognise the voice and the style but I'm not sure who it is.... It's quite good, but I get the feeling i is by a band I don't like if that makes sense.

9. God I really know this now I think about it. Almost sounds like it should be Architecture in Helsinki, or The Go! Team, or even both with some Arcade Fire thrown in. It's brilliant and if I don't find out who it is soon I might get upset.

10. Hmmm, again, recognise the style but I'm not sure who it is. It's really great though, like this.

11. Quite cool song that sounds like a cross between The Eels, They Might Be Giants and The Beatles maybe. Like it.

12. "I Love You Jeeeeeesuuuuuuus Chriiiiiist" it starts... Presume this is tacking the piss a bit! Nice grungy backing and kerazy drumming!

13. Seu Jorge - Changes. I presumed this was from The Life Aquatic but I can't actually find it on the soundtrack CD... Where did you get it from? I love it anyway, I've been planning to put my favourite Seu Jorge Bowie cover on a Rllmuk CD myself...

14. I think this is Elton John, but I have to admit my knowledge is lacking. It's quite cool anyway, which is surprising because I always thought I didn't like Elton John and this is the second song I've listened to in the past year by him (presuming this is) that I've liked.

Overall a good CD anyway, thought it was going to be bootlegs all the way through but I don't *think* it was, lots of stuff I enjoyed though AND it came in a weird rubber thing. Track nine is fantastic. What is it?!

Glad you liked it Blackplastic, I should of given it a title to give you some clue to the theme. It's roughly 1/3 bootlegs, 1/3 classic summery tunes to ward off the winterblues and 1/3 Songs i've found on blogs over the last couple of weeks. Tell your girlfriend she can pop round anytime to check out my 'bootlegs'. fnar fnar

So tracklisting and 'my thoughts'

1. Black Beatles - Loo And Placido

A bootleg of Run For Your Life by The Beatles and various hippity hop.

2. You're The One I Want In The Next Episode - DisFUnctional DJ

This was a bit of a comedy one but does work amazingly well.

3. Dr Who On Holiday - Dean Gray

American Edit was a fantastic bootproject. I heard this was secretly 2 Many Djs/Soulwax and the quality shows.

4. Whistler's Delight - DJ Riko

Very clever boot. This was actually released on 12". DJ Riko guarantees a good time.

5. higher than the sun (tone396 mix) - Primalscreamremixed.com

Check out the site for the rest of the album, some of them are quite different.

6. spinning away - Brian Eno

Classic Eno Pop from Wrong Way Up with John Cale (most underrated album EVA)

7. Hurtin' 4 Certain - Russian Futurists

Stomping summery marching song.

8. Van Helsing Boombox - Man Man

Keeping up the Russsian theme (although their from Philadelphia) these guys sound like they've been drinking Vodka since 10am and are now having a singalong.

9. Oh Mandy - The Spinto Band

Amazing isn't it! Something Westlife might produce if you cut off their balls and put them in 'Amazing indie pop' training camp for 3 years with only gruel for sustenance. Only downside is nothing else on the album comes close.

10. Twin Cinema - The New Pornographers

Probably went under most peoples radars last year. More great indie pop from Canada. This time the album does live up to the promise.

11. The King of Carrot Flowers Pt. One - Neutral Milk Hotel

12. The King of Carrot Flowers Pts. Two and Three - Neutral Milk Hotel

A great reissue I found thanks to this forum. Like you said a bit of everything.

13. Changes - Seu Jorge

Seu Jorge released a standalone album of Bowie covers and I think this was on it (although I got it from a blog)

14. Goodbye Stranger - Supertramp

Chosen partially for the title but also one of those great 70s prog-pop bands (See also ELO) that are very uncool but have produced some amazing tunes - and it does sound like Elton John!

It makes you feel all warm inside when you know you've introduced someone to something they like. Behold the power of the mix club!
