January Cd Mix Club

'Kay, Kelthink - here's your track listing. Glad it worked:

1 - This is just Ronald Reagan speculating about alien attack.

2 - Spladang by THD, ace acid stomper from the classic Sabrettes 101+303... compilation.

3 - Amityville (The House on the Hlll) - Lovebug Starski. I've a feeling I used a couple of these tracks in a CD a few months ago, but they're hard to argue with.

4 - Scorpio - Grandmaster Flash. Top vocoder action in this one.

5 - Rapper's Reprise (Jam Jam) - Sugarhill Gang. I'd never be so gauche as to actually put Delight on, you understand.

6 - Super Wolf Can Do It - Super Wolf. Nice... a lot of these are from the great Sugar Hill 2CD compilations that came out a few years ago, you still see them on the cheap in HMV sometimes. Every one a winner.

7 - Turn it Up - Treacherous Three & Kool Moe Dee. Last of the old school tracks. Kind of...

8 - Sticky, Two Lone Swordsmen. Picks up the pace and the Sabrettes thread.

9 - Dragnet '88, Art of Noise. Peerless pitch-fiddled sampling.

10 - Let's Go All The Way - Sly Fox. Time's going backwards again by this point.

11 - Being Boiled, Human League. And back...

12 - Spark, Two Lone Swordsmen again. Ah, back to living memory, kicking off the wind-down.

13 - Julie's Theme - John Carpenter, from Assualt on Precinct 13. And down...

14 - Barbie Girl, Electric Chairs. Actuallly from The Orb's Back to Mine mix, which is why it starts off as Global Communication. There's something pleasantly perverse about being able to successfully wind down a CD with a version of Barbie Girl.

ojlim: Good stuff, Doom and Dusty are always welcome. I strongly suspect you may have 8 & 9 and 17 & 18 mixed up... and even the Sovereign track was salvaged by what was either a nice subtle glitchy production job or poor MP3 compression. Either way, texturetastic. I always like Yo La Tengo when I hear them, the Getz was as good as I'd expect... I could have lived without the Missy Elliot, if the truth be known (vocoder notwithstanding), but as I've already said the CD cover is fantastic, so that easily makes everything alright again. Cheers!

1. Belle And Sebastian - Electronic Renaissance

Not a big fan of these usually but this song has really grown on me, the quality sounded a bit off towards the start though, maybe it's supposed to sound like that...

The reason that the sound is a bit iffy is this - The track was originally recorded by S Murdoch when he was on the music course from the dole, it was then played on a local radio station at which point S Murdoch taped it from the broadcast and added more to the track. It's one of my favourite B&S tracks even though it sounds nothing like the rest of their stuff.

That's a great story, I like hearing stuff about the background of tracks.  Could you recommend a good B & S album to start off with?

Probably best to go with The Boy With The Arab Strap, but their new album The Life Pursuit is really funky, and it's worth checking out.

Did you get a chance to listen to my CD? I'm bit worried, based on the tracklist for the one you sent out, that you'll have hated it. :(

I'm listening to it on the way to work this week. Some of it I'm liking, some of it I'm not so keen on. Could I have a tracklist please? I've got a feeling that the ones I'm enjoying most are the older tracks on there but I could be completely wrong.

Dammit.

Farley's CD is one of those annoying ones which you KNOW the songs as they're playing, but you can't bloody remember what the hell they are. I do remember The Source though - 'You Got The Love'. Currently on track six which is a DJ cut and paste thing which I've heard many times before but can't remember who the artist is. I'm suer it's the one timdp sent me the other day. Anyway - I'll post a full analysis after the thing has finished.

Farley; would it be possible to post a tracklist please?

I want to listen to the CD again this time knowing what the tracks are before posting proper comments.

I liked it though  : )

I received the same CD, as Farley and I are swaping this month (Jan). Thanks Farley BTW, and I'll post up some comments sometime this millennium.

I like the last few tracks though ;)

Hmm I’m unsure of what CD to make for my recipient this month.  Mainly due to what he’s said he’s going to put on his CD lol.

I might aim to break his speakers just to be a bastard, oh choices :)

I'll start on it tonight either way!

I had a feeling that you meant me, but I actually liked it. Here's what I thought

01.Cassetteboy - God Bless America

Funny opener (funny haha, not funny strange), much like the ones done on Rory Bremner.

02.The Prodigy - Poison (95 EQ)

The only song I knew, nice start.

03.DJ Icey - Sinewave

Really Liked this one, mainly because of the little sound effects in the background.

04.BT - Smartbomb

Thought this one was ok

05.Dogzilla - without you (dub)

I normally hate anything trancey but actually liked this one.

06.Seelenluft - Strings Of Silvercity

One of my favourites, Nice and chilled and nice guitar on it.

07.Trs-80 - Hand Over Fist

I really liked parts of the song and hated others. The beginning bit was dull, then a couple of minutes in there's this really nice bit that piqued my interest, which was then followed by some glitchy bits that didn't, from then on I liked it.

08.Ladyscraper - Osaka

Another song I liked parts of and hated others. Started out really nice then a glitchy bit cut in again and ruined it I liked the backing sounds though.

09.Datach'i - We Are Always Well Thank You

Similar to 7 and 8.

10.squarepusher - a journey to reedham (7am mix)

Another of my favourites, Nice peice of electronica and one I actually liked the glitchy bits on.

11.Electric Company - iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii

I loved the simplicity of this one with the piano and stringed instrument parts.

12.Wisp - 1stop

Thought this one was boring.

13.Mum - Green Grass of Tunnel

Absolutely loved this one, probably pushing for the best song I've ever recieved while doing the mix club, really beautiful especially when the vocals kick in, is everything they do this good? If it is I'll probably go out and buy their entire back catalogue.

14.Ochre - Rem Sleep Research

Thought this one was ok.

15.Dat Politics - Pie

Another one I Liked, nice chipmonk noises

16.Kid Carpet - Hip Hip Hooray

Nice closer, left me with a smile on my face.

Overall not the kind of stuff that I normally listen to, but lots of great stuff, cheers.

I'll comment on Juan Maclean for you. After seeing you pimp that track on here and name it tune of the year on your blog I grabbed his album. Altogether a very dissapointing listen I thought. The first half an hour was pretty dull and I really didn't see what was so special about Dance With Me. I'll give it another chance but I can't see myself coming round on this one......

Im so sorry, had a rubbish month. I'll have to send mine after the weekend now, apologies once again.

Nae worries chuck.

Mine's been in my work bag all week but I've not made it to the PO yet. Useless. Two first class stamps should wing it tonight I hope.

I've not listened to bpempires much this week as the girlfriend's pipes froze so I've not had a chance. AND she has the flu. Which I now probably have.

Sorry to hear that mate... Nothing on the album lives up to Dance With Me, but that track is (IMHO obviously) fantastic. Try listening again, the first few times I heard it I didn't think it was as good as I do now.

1. Eels - Old Shit / New Shit

Very keen indeed. First time I listened to this I thought, "this sounds like a lively Eels", and guess what? It is. Very nice indeed. They've always been one of those bands who I thought I'd like, but never really got past their big hits to find some other stuff. On this form I suppose I'd better.

2. Gemma Hayes - Nothing Can

I quite liked this. Very heartfelt. The sort of song you'd expect in a buddy movie's soundtrack playing in the background if the two leads fall out and go their seperate ways.

3. The Cardigans - I Need Some Fine Wine and You, You Need to be Nicer

Not too sure about this. Not tough enough to be a rock out, not leftfield enough to be make a good pop record that they were good at. It's ok, but it's a bit midling.

4. Common - Love Is...

I love this with all my soft heart. Bar Go! my favourite tune on Be. and has been on a couple of my own CD club mixes. The combination between saccarine sweet beats and melodies and the vocal's message is amazing. For anyone else reading this, buy Be!

5. Tom Vek - Nothing But Green Lights

I loved Tom Vek's last album and was looking forward to new material from him. I'm not sure what the new one's like, but I can see why they picked this as a single, it's very familiar to his earlier work. Still, like it a lot, good to see bedroom bangers still making it.

6. Art Brut - My Little Brother

Not too impressed. Sounds like a mix of about 5 other bands without having anything of their own. The voice grates massivly! The lyrics are pretty spot on though.

7. The Chemical Brothers - Close Your Eyes

Not too bad. Never heard this before, I could be forgiven for not thinking this was the Chems.

8. Arcade Fire - Rebellion (Lies)

Really enjoyed this. I've liked everything I've ever heard from them, but never picked up the album. Something that will be rectified soon. The passion they put into each song is incredible.

9. Volcano - Apple or a Gun

Like 10 songs in the space of 5 minutes. Weird. Very weird.

10. WhoMadeWho - Out the Door

Very funky. This has got a bit of a strut on it. Liked it.

11. Tiefschwarz feat. Matty Safer - Warning Siren

Very cool indeed. I love Tiefschwarz and am looking forward to the Fabric mix they are (apparently) putting out.

12. Royksopp feat. Chelonis R. Jones - 49 Percent (Ewan Pearson Mix)

The original was one of my favourite songs from last year, so I liked this too. It's pretty much the original with a different 4/4 behind it, buts it's very tastefully done. Ewan Pearson is usually the man with remixes, so it's no suprise this is decent. Much more punchier than the album version too, I could see this going down well in a club. They've dropped the echoing sax in the background though!

13. M83 - Don't Save Us From The Flames (Superpitcher Mix)

Wow, this is powerful. I could hear Sasha playing this. Really like this a lot.

14. Juan Maclean - Dance With Me

A bit overlong as it doesn't really do much over the 14 minutes. Still it's quite enjoyable if slightly overlong.

Cool, glad you liked some of it, and I hope you didn't already know *too* much, as I say, these are some of my favourites from this year so it was never going to be particularly highbrow. I guess I'll have to give up on selling people on the wonderment that is 'Dance With Me' though, which is a shame because I just think it is too good for words.
