Sega Rally 2006

Ok, 2006....hmm

Yes I agree with what was said before about the handling, very very floaty, sometimes to the point where if you get some air you`re not totally sure if/when you`ve landed. I'd go so far to say that the handing is worse than SR2 on DC. But not unplayable by any means.

Playing 1995 just before 2006 just makes you realise just how (comparitively) little effort has gone into 2006.

Still I`m finding it very very odd playing what was Sega's flagship racer on a Sony machine.....wierd I`ve never felt like that with any of Sega's other PS2 games.

How'd you feel about SMB deluxe on the xbox? :)

Super Mario Bros? duh :)

Sega Rally was always an iconic Saturn game IMO, not that I`m a Sega fanboy (I owned a PS1 years before I got a Saturn) but it's just odd I guess because it's a sign of how the industry has changed.

I'd be very glad of a PS2 version of the arcade version of Daytona USA !

Me too, arcade perect as this is (there about). It's certainly a massive high-five to CS for their Sega Rally port on the Saturn too. The game play is identical.

I'll get some vids of 2006 too sometime over the weekend for those still unsure. It is a good game, on par with SR2 and better than the recent crop of rallying titles.

Right - lets have a discussion about that final corner :D

See, I was driving like I stole it, top speed all the way around the course, leaving it in fourth and taking a straight line from off the far-left (i.e. on the grass) into the apex.  Giving it some stick and sliding out wide (actually, the car would "correct" itself, ending up wide - such brilliant control for a digital input).

Now, I was experimenting with this and found the car dips power slightly if turned too far, but the split would be -0"34 or higher going into the corner  So, I was trying to turn that little bit earlier but carry the same speed through the final bend - not so the car would dip in power (about 130-ish? Too slow...), but by dropping down to 3rd - briefly - to retain a speed of 150-ish where the car starts to accelerate and correct itself, changing back to fourth.  This kinda follows what automatic does and I can equal my time following this.  I haven't tried to "beat" my time, so to speak, just experiment a bit - it has been a while...

So, what are you guys doing on the final bend in the Desert course??  The above assumes the Celica (my time is the same as the Delta now), the line is a little different (for me, at any rate) with the Delta.

;)

Well, I never had a Saturn, but I doubt I'll play this enough to be able to compete with that lot.

Oh come on!

Bloody hell, that pop-up is a shambles for a late gen Ps2 game. I mean, technically, its a rush job. The tracks are confined ffs - how can they let that kinda pop-up (and texture error) slip through the net?

I'd agree theres some nice gameplay - as already said - its nothing like as loose as SR - but its playable - but technically, its a bit of a sham.

I'd agree It is fast though and running at 60fs.

I'm not sure its better then recent rally games. In fairness, the tracks are designed for arcade racing - and i guess its better then many of the "arcade" rally titles - but i think people want it top be good because its SR.

Is anyone having any erm....texture issues (like textures appearing all over the place?) in 2006?

I've recently tuned my PS2 laser...it could be that..but it doesn't excuse the general pop-up.

I will say its lovely and fast - it kinda demonstrates why 60fps is so important - most pal Ps2(and NTSC) rally games do run at somewhat lower framerates and suffer as a result.

Nice music too.

I could do 51secs on the saturn version...

You'll be wanting to prove that on this version then, aye? :) 51 seconds on the default car settings in the Delta/Celica is pretty damn fast, faster than the PC record, iirc.

I have a feeling that <45 are possibly on the Saturn version using tuned cars.

Aye, PC version those shots. It's all the same mind, perhaps the only port to perfectly capture the game play from the arcade version. PS2 version is flawless. I put 'em up for kam :)

The practise mode is enough for time trail. Just keep whacking start to skip the ending/credits.

I switched to the Celica for you, I'm far less consistent to be honest (see video).

src2.jpgsrc1.jpg

Just get as close to the walls as possible -- there are a couple of places I could have done that on the fastest lap and if I hadn't of hit the first corner/wall, I reckon <54 would have possible.

edit: Ah, I haven't got the space for the video so I'll yousendit. Hang on...

edit 2: lolz - I have if I compress the audio. christ ;)

video click here. s'bout 20meg 'cos i wanted you to see what was going on, better bitrate. i did it lower but it looked like the gba game :(

Right, I think I can see where I can make some slight adjustments now. Thanks for that.

I notice you try not to go below 180 in the muddy patch just after the checkpoint. I need to concentrate on doing that myself.

52 seconds, though... that's still a mystery to me.

Yeah, that corner is right pain in the arse -- done properly, that's your 52 seconds.

Only thing I can suggest is to get as far left as possible and steer right into the wall and counter-steer to avoid sliding too much. As soon as the corner clears (I love that in Sega Rally) your view, you should ideally have traction and be accelerating to the little bend and should skim that as close as possible. Some folk go wide there avoiding having to correct the cars path thus carrying lots of speed over the jumps. The disadvantage here is that you have to either correct the car as it hits the last jump or handle it when you land with a quick flick right then left to swing the car around that easy left. I like to take it far right and stay as straight as possible there.

There's no need to let off the gas at all on the desert course either

Phew!

I had a 54.02 with the Delta but I didn't capture it so it's not official
