The older I get the more I realise this might be the best house track. Joe Claussell is clearly a genius, that's beyond debate really. However, what he does to this record is something else. Like all of his best work it starts as you may expect and you could be fooled into thinking it's just a really, really nice jazzy deep house number, then it changes into something better. Properly transcendent music on every level. I think if my house was burning down, this is what I'd save.

Been on a trip down memory lane. Think I've posted this in the thread already but it was probably years ago. Another foot stomping classic. Really did have a blast in the late 80s. Being a fan of Hip Hop and seeing this scene take off in Britain was a privilege. As a sparkly eyed teen I hoovered it all up. Heady days.

I used to listen to Stu Allen from 86, the Hip Hop hour on Key 103. I'd been into Hip Hop for a couple of years by then, mainly Electro. Anyway, I remember before even knowing what House music was, not surprising as it was as you say nascent, hearing the below track by accident. I sometimes set the tape to record the Hip Hop show on a timer and it sometimes caught bits of the following hour. House was just finding its feet over here, so this other show after Bus' Dis, well I don't even remember if it was called the House hour back then but it was playing what would be seen as House tracks, this was now 87. My taping caught the track below and I knew, honest to god, that we were about to get a whole new scene. 

 

It took another 12 months before I dove head first but I definitely remember feeling its rumblings. The track fits in with your Gay crowd observation, the whole Hi-NRG thing that helped the scene take off. There was deffo a cross over with Detroit and Chicago House and a lightening in a bottle moment. So yeah, this was my first exposure to what would become House music. Back in 87.

Really nice post that.

 

That still sounds absolutely amazing to my ear. I think people try to recreate that rawness now and it falls a bit flat because it doesn't have the same inventiveness and spontaneity. It still blows my mind the amount of variety that was created with basically two bits of kit being used improperly. I mean, this sounds like it was made in a Berlin bedroom next week and it's over 30 years old.

Another classic from the late 80s. Have a mix with this in that's out of this world. Need to convert it one day.

 

 

And for anyone who may shout it's not very House, the below version has more of the accepted House music vibe.

I was reading about that last night but wasn’t sure where to share it on here. I’m absolutely gutted about it. He provided the backbone to my collection of house and bruk when I first started collecting records. Was playing a few this morning and they haven’t aged at all. Such a shame as he was a top bloke by all accounts and was always entertaining when I saw him DJ.

Yeah i've always had a soft spot for his music, he had a bit of a different sound to a lot of the broken beat stuff, more deep housey.

 

My ex-girlfriend interviewed him a few times when she worked at Mixmag and got to know him a bit and he was apparently a lovely chap.

Deep crates and huge knowledge as well.
