Best Scary Games

enemies didn't respawn (unless you were on that crazy gametype where they did 'survival' or something) so you weren't under constant attack meaning there were breaks in pace. aliens moved fast and were hard to hit as they're supposed to be... not much of a game if they were slow.

ffs.

Are you positive? I`d find myself backtracking through areas and they`d be crawling with aliens, as if I`d never explored there before.

What`s more, they`d seek you out if you were in a different area... it felt to me like there was never a break in the pace, it was just attack, attack, attack.

There`s no need to be short either, keep your hair on. It`s only my opinion.

The scariest thing about AVP (and the best thing about the game imo), was the fact that, unlike in the crap sequel, the aliens weren't scripted to jump out at you when you cross invisible triggers, they actually made their way through the whole level, effectively hunting you down. You'd be constantly on edge because they could be anywhere at any time. I remember the demo...if you just stay in the APC, they come and rape you right there.

Btw, I completed it on the hardest difficulty, without the lame-o save anywhere patch. *smug*

You don't have to play the first one, everything you need to know is explained early on.  But try and get the instruction manual with the game, it gives you the full backstory.

Ah, that`s good to know, I`ll definitely be keeping my eyes out for it, it seems to be a forum favourite.

See, I get why that`s clever - and if someone asked me before I played it whether I thought it was a good idea or not I`d have said yes - but it just plain aggravated me and I didn`t want to play it.

Maybe if it had designated "safe areas", which you could lock down with security doors or something.

I reached the old store in Condemned last night and this has just jumped straight to the top of the list, when the mannequins start doing their thing I thought my heart was going to explode.

Also I defiantly agree with Popo that the scares need to be punctuated with safe spot breathers, It's this toying with players emotions that make you feel more vulnerable.

HL2, the little run up to Ravenholme freaked me out a bit.

You see the sealed corridor and Alyx is all "We don't go to Ravenholme anymore"...then you're busy having fun with Dog, playing catch with the gravity gun, enjoying yourself, forgetting that dark corridor of mystery. Then it all kicks off and its all "You're gonna have to go through Ravenholme...". Dog shutting the door behind you, leaving you all alone. Then stepping out into the town itself, hearing the music going all Dawn of the Dead.

That and SH2.

Yup, the whole pre-Ravenholme thing was brilliantly done. Ravenholme itself is fucking superb. Brrr.

running out of ammo in Ravenholme and realising you have to kill all the zombies using tins of paint and the grav gun. Now that's scary!

Then they start filling the streets in greater numbers, and you think "... shit."

Then comes the howling.

Silent Hill 4 (I think, The Room one on xbox) - completely fucked up game.

Eternal Darkness - The insanity effects and those creepy footsteps.

Resident Evil 3 - The (seemingly) random placing of the Nemesis caught me off guard more than a few times, even on replays. ("Ah this is where those crows crash through the windOH FUCK!!").

Dino Crisis - Think it's already been mentioned a few times in the thread but the introduction of the first T Rex was a massive scare and kept me on edge for the rest of the game.

Aye and those bastard howling dog things that tackle you off of the roofs down to the badness below.

Edit - What Meh said.

I found SH4 quite tame, tbh. It isn't until later in the game, when your flat starts to go mental, and then you get random ghost hauntings when you've just gotten out of bed and walk into the living room, that it ever gets anywhere near scary.

Yep,it has to be System Shock 2.

I had to stop playing at times I became so tense.

Utterly brilliant but it will make you a nervous wreck.

Can you still buy system shock 2? Also, will it work straight onto PC, or do you have to patch it to hell and back?

I'd check out Home of the Underdogs if I were you. Last time I played it it didn't require any fiddling to get working, and it was as great as I remembered. A friend couldn't get it running on his laptop, though. There are new improved texture packs out there for it, but I just played the original and had a blast. Well, not really a blast, more of a wonderful nightmare.

This thread is actually really interesting to me at the mo, as I'm on a bit of a scary games tip at the mo, having just received review code of Project Zero 3. Really enjoyable, but bloody scary (but then again I'm just a big wuss). Should I be seeking out Haunting Ground then, anyone? The concept always intrigued me, and I'm thinking I should be able to snaffle it up on the cheap from somewhere...

I need to get back into Haunting Ground, I've barely started it. I got a bit annoyed after I picked up the big lug's doll at the start, threw it to test it out later on, and then found I couldn't pick it up again, so I switched to something else and haven't gotten round to resuming. But what I've played was reallly great - no HUD cruft, and therefore very immersive, lovely graphics and great environments / atmosphere, and no pauses for loading. Very menacing, too - you feel vulnerable all the time.

I personally hated Haunting Ground. It's terribly clumsy to play, irritating beyond belief, and the dog fucked me right off.

Playing F.E.A.R. at 2am has given me several heart attacks.

I enjoyed FEAR but it never scared me ... you do realise you can use slow-mo anytime you want, you are ALWAYS tooled up with a nice selection of weapons and copious amounts of ammo and your fighting miscellaneous soldier bad guys with the occasional large robot thrown in.

You're such a happy, charming gamer, aren't you? :(

Didn't the fact the the PAL version even had a Prog Scan option lighten your day?

:)

It didn't click with me. I can see what they were trying to do with it, but it seems to have gotten the balance between challenge and fun very much confused, resulting in a frustrating bastard of a game.

Yeah. It's a step away from the norm, no weapons, hiding, having control ripped away from you when it all goes a bit pete tong. But because of that, I loved it as one of the most unique games I played this generation. I really felt vulnerable and never at ease. Out of interest, how far into it did you get?

I got past the crazy robot-type woman thing. I think. The plot seemed to make zero sense, too.

The torrent on home of the underdogs for SS2 DOES NOT WORK. I've tried to download it 3 times, it's always corrupt when it finishes.

Ah, the maid... Yes, she was a bitch. Shame you didn't get past that (her death is one of the best I've seen in any game). The next section has the bloke himself after you. The plot is barmy, yes, but does make sense by the end. I think.
