The Unofficial Aston Villa thread!

I was out in the Welsh mountains sans internet when I heard (well, I had about one bar of signal for thirty seconds of every hour) but now I'm back online I see the circumstances of his death were particularly horrible, I'll be following the investigation on this one, but if it turns out he was tasered multiple times and kicked while restrained on the ground then it could lead to wider public unrest as he's a (relatively) high profile figure who would be more difficult for the media to smear than other black men who were killed by the police.

We've made some great signings in this window. I can't help feeling that this is the direction we should have taken last year, some real leaders, and we might have stayed up.

In in all honesty, and loads of my Premiership supporting mates don't believe me, this is as happy as I've been as s Villa fan since MON left.  Trying to get back to the Premiership seems better than when you are actually there.

You've picked up Jedinak for a bargain fee.

He is well loved a Palace a ridiculously hard working, down to earth midfield general, hard as nails as well, you will undoubtedly get to see a few bone crunchers (and an occasional "accidental" elbow when an opposition players fancy themselves as a tough guy).

Were Palace throwing all their eggs in the Benteke basket when they sold Jedinak?  I get selling Bolasie to fund the Benteke transfer but going by the reaction of Palace fans to the deal it seems they were expecting him to be a key player this season.  We didn't pay much money for him, I doubt he is on huge wages and he only celebrated his 32nd birthday a couple of weeks ago so unless the Palace medical team know something we don't he's got a couple of decent seasons in him yet.  If everything is as it appears to be on the surface then we've got exactly the type of player we need.

With McArthur, Ledley and Cabaye all (rightly, on performance) ahead of him in centre mid he wouldn't have got much game time and he's not the kind of player that would thrive on the bench, he only had year on his contract and had been loyal so would have been supported in moving on (it appears to be what he wanted, also he seems to have a dislike of Pardew).

We were offering for Benteke way before Bolasie's move and didn't need the cash from his sale to fund it, Bolasie's agent is a bit of a shit and rumour is that he pushed the deal on in the background and we were left with Bolasie having much higher wages dangled in front of him giving him the arse so banking the money was the sensible option (Bolasie is not the type of player to perform when he has the arse).

I know it's obvious but we need players like Jedinak.  The new signings, Elphick in particular, seem to have been a breath of fresh air.  In my experience Villa fans are not too difficult to please, they simply want to see a player putting it in for the shirt.  Something lacking in recent seasons.

And since Twitter said Drogba was in Birmingham yesterday* to sign for his old pal Di Matteo**, promotion is assured***.

* he wasn't

** he isn't

*** it's not

I'm very much of the mind that that once this team gels it will be quite formidable.  The amount of chances we make is getting quite ridiculous now considering we've one win under our belts.

We do need to take our chances & close out games though.  I've already had enough what-ifs to last the entire season.

I think we will spank a few teams when we click, I'm just concerned we might be adrift by the time we click and of course we lose a lot of our forward line to the Africa Cup of Nations in January.  I can't see us in the hunt for the title at the moment.  Kodija looks the business (I still want to say Kojima every time I see his name...)  but I'm still concerned that our midfield looks a bit easy just to run through the middle of.  Maybe when Jedinak comes in for Gardener we will have a bit of bite and nous at the protecting the centre halves.

Xia doesn't strike me as a patient man though, he's been quick to publicly slag off players so I don't think for a second he'd have any qualms about binning RDM if we are in the bottom half of the table in November/December.

David Moyes in a heartbeat.  I can't see him wanting to come to the Villa though, so if we can't get him then I'll take a Championship specialist like Big Mick McCarthy. I'd even take Spudface,  Maybe Simon Grayson as an outside bet, he's doing a good job at Preston (promoted last season, holding their own with limited resources this year) and he's ex Villa so maybe will have an instant rapport with the fans.   No thanks to Warnock or Nigel Pearson.

Looking increasingly like Spudface is coming in.  Everton have reported their chief European scout Ian Atkins has left the club to join Aston Villa.  Atkins worked with Steve Bruce at Sunderland.  I'd have taken Bruce over Di Matteo at the start of the season, he's got a lot of work to do if we want to be in the race for the playoffs but we have good players and maybe having a manager in place who doesn't try to crowbar four forwards into the team at the expense of having no midfield to speak of might be the first step in turning this fucking disaster of a season around.

I don't think you'll find many Villa fans arguing otherwise.  We were exceptionally lucky today, but Wolves should be kicking themselves they didn't win handsomely.

Yeah we really should have buried a couple of those chances.

I'll always be the first to say when Wolves played shit, God knows I've have plenty of practice, but we really feel robbed last night.

I must admit, I was surprised how poor Villa were last night, I think you have the right man in place to turn it around though.

Every Blues fan I know is really nervous about this game. I'm not sure we are as good as they seem to think, most of the opinions I hear are variations on the 'it would be bloody typical if Steve Bruce beat us' theory.

Im going for a horrible 0-0. If anybody does win then it will probably be due to a defensive error.

Absolutely tragic.  When I heard he collapsed yesterday I was shocked but when the news of his passing this morning genuinely rocked me.

Back in the mid to late 90's he was always one of my favourite players during a period of time I could actually have a season ticket and go to games.

44.  If we didn't already know, life's so unfair.

Looking like John Terry signs today.  It doesn't strike me as a particularly good bit of business from a footballing point of view.  We had one of the best defences in the league last season, it was lack of goals which cost us, and the Chester Baker partnership seems more than good enough for the Championship.  I can't see how Terry can do much on the pitch to solve our issues going forwards, he's probably better than Nathan Baker but not £100k a week or whatever he'll be getting paid better, so I can't see the point beyond the fact that he's a "name" and Xia thinks bringing him in is a statement of intent which will attract other players and sponsors to the club, I mean a pre season tour of China will probably generate more press if we've got a player in the team that the locals have actually heard of.

Thing is, Terry is an arsehole.  I kinda like disliking him.  Maybe he'll be brilliant but part of me wonders if a guy so synonymous with one club will have his heart in it when he moves to another. I'm guessing his family will be staying in Surrey while he's in digs up in Brum somewhere. Will Terry be meeting people, shaking hands, making things happen off the pitch in an ambassadorial role or will he shooting off back down the M40 every chance he gets?   Hopefully I'm won over, but as I stand right now I just can't see the point.
