The Spurs Thread

I'm not singling out Spurs here, because they're probably the only football team I'd call myself any kind of 'fan' of, but there's a gripe I'd like to express with regard to football culture in general.

And I'm aware it's a gripe that's probably been expressed before. Many-a-time.

What's with the 'we' thing? Why do football fans say 'we' need to do better, or 'we' are the best, etc. You don't play for the team. You don't really have any link to the team. I mean, you're lucky if one or two of the team you support are even English. It's just ridiculous tbh; a bizarre form of pride and gang culture, almost nationalistic but on a localised scale. Or maybe it's just a slip of the tongue people learn, as children learn language, in the fan culture and it doesn't mean anything? But, to an outsider, the former would seem likely, unfortunately. Is this ignorance, or are we judging such animal-pack hypocrisy as justly as it deserves? I'm a Batman fan. Should I start saying 'we are doing well', because The Dark Knight has been a box office success?

Diiiiiscuuuus!

P.S: I hope Spurs start performing!

To some people you may be right, but I think in the majority of cases it's ust a much easier abbreviation than having to say your teams name. If you only speak about football with the same group of people then they all know who you support anyway.

The link isn't to the team, it is to the club. In most cases you support the club your father did and his father did etc. For a lot of supporters great memories and experiences are tied to the club and so there is a link. Following a football club is a way of life for some, and you do feel like a part of the club. Supporters contribute to the club's income and invest emotionally too, so it's not bizarre at all to say 'we'.

[edit] The only constant element of a football club is its supporters, so 'we' is pretty apt actually.

[edit 2] Beaten. What Daley said.

This. Also, the owners of clubs change, the manager, the players, everyone basically apart from the fans. If anyone has a right to feel part of a club and say "we" it is the fans.

Oh man, we played really well 1st half after Bale went off, 10 minutes in the dressing room and they come out and concede right away, right when the lads should be 'fired up' after half-time.

Ramos cannot motivate our players, what was he doing when everyone was standing about when Corluka was injured? bugger all! Why was he not talking tactics with Jenas or anyone else? or giving some of the players having a bit of a bad time some advice and encouragement? He needs to be gone by Midweek or we will have no chance of pulling out of this at all, rather than the slim chance we have at the moment. True the game was bitty which didn't help, but Ramos should be the one keeping the players focused and we should have kept on but we just folded.

He has no proper command of English. One solitary press conference in English doesn't make you fluent in the language.

As long as your club is run in this manner it won't matter who you bring in.

Very true. Jol has even had a subtle dig at Comolli this weekend. The two 'big' Premier League clubs that are struggling both use the director of football system. No coincedence there.

Its not the system itself though, its the people that are causing the problems. We had a DoF when we were doing well too, Arnesen was brilliant and worked amazingly well with Jol, but Commoli doesn't know what he's doing and that's why we're royally screwed right now.

Says the man who has a club running smooth as clockwork :D

It seems the more in debt and hilariously badly run the better you do - yes i am calling Man U, Liverpool and Chelsea :P

Ahh well, if we go down i can watch Spurs at Norwich next season - always looking for silver linings me !

It's no surprise that buying expensive players putting you in debt ends up in the team doing better. Maybe your lot should have though of that before selling your 3 best strikers!

The only chance of a Spurs survival this season depends on the January transfer window, and getting Levy/Commoli out in place or new owners.

Until then, we're going to keep playing the way we are. I won't be surprised if we still have 2 points come Christmas.

If we only have two points at Christmas we are relegated regardless of the January window. The rot needs to stop against Bolton or, well, it really is game over because after that it's Arsenal, Liverpool and Man City. Nurse!

Only one team has ever avoided relegation in the Premier League from this position at this point in a season.

I think our first win will be against Fulham.

Arnesen is more of an exception to the rule to be fair. He's more of a talent spotter for young talent is he not? Kids more than first teamers.

Man Utd and Liverpool hardly spend beyond their transfer budgets though. The debt that both clubs have was brought on by the actual purchase of the clubs themselves.
