He's a posh tosser in England too. If he met biglime or me in real-life, he wouldn't dare utter an insult, get on his show however and it's crappy innuendo a-fuckin'-hoy.

I say bollocks to that. :(

I'd bet you any money he would. He frequently took the piss out of everyone and anyone on Popworld, regardless of their size, stature or importance.

This is 100% fact.

Oh, and small point, not replying to anybody in particular, he also didn't go to a public school.

So it's shit because he's a "posh..schoolboy"?

This is an astonishing outburst coming from the guy that says people shouldn't use the term "chav" as it is an insulting generalisation of the working classes.

But that's true. Also, it doesn't make any sense at all in the context of your post.

Still, I think the "posh schoolboy" stuff Rab's on about is bollocks. The guy's naturally witty and sometimes needlessly harsh, but he's a million times better than Lamarr's smug, self-satified wankerism. Amstell is the reason I can actually watch Buzzcocks these days.

This. Completely, completely.

No, the show's shit because it's shit.

Let's put it this way - if you were presenting a TV show and the writers asked you to slag off a guest's wife, not by saying anything amusing, just by making snide little digs, would you do it? Or would you say "hang on...why would I sit there and ridicule a man's wife just for the sake of it?"

It's like when Clive Anderson slagged off the Bee Gees until they walked off. He called it the lowest point of his career. The point at which he realised he'd lowered himself to a level he wasn't comfortable with. Guys like your Amstell gravitate at that level forever. That's their thing.

Ridiculing harmless pop stars and their harmless celebrity wives? Oh, the WIT!

Anyway. I'm certainly not going to sit here and argue about Never Mind The Buzzcocks. It's got Phil fucking shitty Jupitus on it, for crying out loud.

I think taking the piss out of Chantelle is perfectly fair. Ridiculing the fact Chantelle has released an autobiography especially. She's about 20 for starters so its not like she's had much of a life to write about so far. She was made famous by being luckily selected to be on a reality TV show. She then hooked up with one of the celebritiees and now she's making a lot of money off it. She has no talent and nothing to say so taking the piss out of that is absolutely perfectly fair in my book. But then I have a personal and deep rooted hatred for the whole celebrity culture.

You look at the stick that Midge Ure got last week and he took it well and played along with it. He was happy to go along with it because he's secure in the knowledge he has talent and has had a pretty good career and done some great things. Preston has done fuck all but thinks he should be treated like celebrity royalty because he's in Heat magazine all the time. Well he can fuck off.

You probably don't make a living out of appearing on TV shows to promote your own fame though, so you're not really fair game are you?

Oh, and small point, not replying to anybody in particular, he also didn't go to a public school.

People assume I went to public school too because they get confused that I come from Somerset and yet don't speak like a farmer.

It's refreshing to have someone fairly young on the TV who isn't ashamed of being middle class and doesn't exaggerate their regional accent just to create a selling point, e.g. Justin Lee Collins, Ceris out of Catatonia, that stand-up guy who is occasionally on Mock The Week who pretends to be Welsh.

That's fair enough, but everyone knows the score with Buzzocks. Don't go on, if that's how you feel. But if you do, it's fair game - because that's what happens on the show. Always has done. And to be honest, he got off damn lightly.

In my opinion, ridiculing people on TV is generally quite funny. It's pretty much a comedy standard. I find it quite odd that you seem to think that it's a really low form of wit. I think it's actually quite clever to make a cutting remark or a keen observation about someone. It's also something that I consider that both you and I do quite often.

He just read lines out of her own (auto)biography. Only a couple as well. If reading out someone elses work in an intonation that is different from that intended by the author is wrong then amateur dramatics is in a lot of trouble.

I remember that. It was a little more harsh than Amstell was dishing out but then what do you expect from an ex Private Eye editor? He's made a career out of taking the piss out of people in the public eye in a slightly schoolboy manner. I think the line which did it was a cheap shot knocking one of their earlier band names. Something you could surely laugh off?

I last saw that clip in some TV compilation along the lines of "you know fame has gone to your head when..."

It's got Phil fucking shitty Jupitus on it, for crying out loud.

OK, you've lost me at this point

Aye. Lamarr was a lot of the attraction for me, when he was hosting. Anstis is different, but great as well.

Ah it's the difference which makes it watchable for me. Go back a couple of pages and you'll see me calling the new host a cunt when really it was the program creators keeping in 'Lamarr' style bits and gags. Now he's been able to put his own style onto the show it's much better for it.

Still it took me ages to watch it again after Sean Hughes left. Change is bad.

Oh yeah, this was it:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bee_Gees#1980s_and_1990s

In 1997 the group made headlines in the UK when they walked out on Clive Anderson during his BBC One chat show, after their revelation that the group was originally called "Les Tossers" prompted Anderson to jokingly remark: "Well, you'll always be [les] tossers to me"

Yes I can remember going "Ooooooh" and sucking the air in through my teeth after that one

Le Tossers, wasn't it?

They sorta only proved his point by walking off stage, to be fair.

My thoughts exactly. At some point in the future, most of the population of Britain will be celebrities.

And also:

On Popworld he developed a highly ironic, surreal and leftfield style which gained the show a cult following, but angered many of its guests. One such example was a mock interview with singer Lemar called "Lemar From Afar," in which Amstell shouted questions into a megaphone from one end of a car park while Lemar stood at the other end.

Superb!
