The Sopranos - Series 6

As much as I love it I think it could do with a ‘previously on The Sopranos’ bit at the start; I can’t really follow/remember some of the older plots.

I can’t remember who killed Phil Leotardos brother, was it Christopher or Steve Buscemi? I can’t remember why Tony and Johnny Sack fell out; was it over the 30lb mole remark?

Damn old age.

As I remember it, Buscemi killed Phil's brother, leading to Johnny Sack demanding Tony hand him over for retribution. Tony refused, leading to animosity between the two of them. Tony then mercy kills Buscemi to save him from the likely torture he'd receive from the other crew when they caught up to him.

I could, of course, be remembering entirely wrongly – or just as likely, mixing up two plot points in my head. Can anyone else confirm/rubbish this?

Ah, good stuff. Interesting point about the 'previously on The Sopranos' bit, actually. I have mixed feelings about that:

I thought the stuff between Tony and Paulie in the latest episode was fairly heavy-handed in that respect. For all the tension the boat trip created, the flashback to Big Pussy was a bit over the top for me; it made it relatively obvious that they were building all of this up only for Tony to decide against doing anything drastic. It was strange that they felt the need to remind viewers about one of the biggest events from a previous Sopranos episode through flashback when some of the more complicated arcs of the past couple of seasons have required viewers to remember much smaller details. Not a real complaint, of course, I thought that scene was great on the whole. The flashback just jarred, especially on top of the short dream sequence. As soon as Tony invited Paulie on the fishing trip, everyone watching will have automatically thought back to the Big Pussy arc.

Just watched the last two episodes - fantastic stuff especially 15.

Hard to know how it is all going to finish although seeds are being planted. I'm torn between if I want a bloody, tragic finale to close the series properly or for the big guy to jack it all in and go look out on a lake full of ducks.

Wasn't Vito murdered by Phil at some motel? At least that's what I kind of remember from ages ago, Phil was hiding in a closet or something.

Piracy-related: I want to see the latest episode but I'm a bit worried after some comments on e*tv about HBO collecting IPs from the recent episodes and sending letters. Apparently running PG2 didn't stop it either. Not sure how it is if you're in the UK, or on newsgroups though.

Last nights was good too.

But only three left now... the tension wasn't very high in that episode. I missed the whole Vito storyline so am not sure what happened to him, did Phil Leotardo do him in and what happened to Meadows boyfriend?

Meadows boyfriend discovered Vito was a homosexual when he saw him sucking off a security guard at the construction site where they worked. Vito started pressuring him to go with him to baseball games to try and keep him quiet. Meanwhile some of Tonys goons saw Vito in full village people regalia when they were collecting there protection money from a gay bar in New York. Vito ended up going on the run in some hick town and starting a relationship with a mustachio-d fireman but he missed the gangster life and made overtures to Tony about letting him back in the family; unfortunately Phil Leotardo found out where he was staying and murdered him before T could bring him back to the fold.

I think Meadows bf split with her because he felt guilty about the part he played in Vito getting murdered.

Episode 16 and all of a sudden Tony is a gambling addict? Seemed a bit forced. I'm presuming Tony was responsible for the guys girlfriend dying in bed at the end to make him feel better about paying back the 200k.

Tony was so on the ropes in that episode I just felt Phil and his gang were going to walk in at any moment and kill them all.

My bet's on Carmella or AJ getting whacked. For some reason I've got it into my head that Christopher will end up killing Carmella.

And what's with the Islamic fundamentalist subtext that's been running for years? It's got to be going somewhere.

AJ's story has been really poor in this latest run. Just lots of moody girlfriend stuff and references to him working in a Pizza parlour. It seems like they are just keeping him in the episodes with trivial parts so when they use him for something big it doesn't seem like he has just appeared again.

Phil Came out of the Closet with two guys to kill Vito in his motel room I think, been a year since I've seen it.

Nah, he's always gambled, but I think this episode was him going through a pretty rough losing streak, so it just focused on it more. Combine that with the downward spiral he's been going through recently and it makes perfect sense that he would lose it like that.

I can never understand what's so great about the Sopranos whilst actually watching it. Then I come back and read this thread with everyone going, "Oh man, such-and-such scene was so tense!" and I realise I was feeling the massive tension and emotion at the same time as well.

Anyway, the latest episode had plenty of emotion. I think the suddenness of Tony's gambling problem added to the feeling of shock and despair at his losses and the repercussions on Carm etc. but once I got over that it did seem a bit out-of-the-blue.

Last nights ep was a bit good. It's certainly all heating up, now.

Completely didn't see the bit at the end coming. Poor bastard just has no luck with regard to Chris, does he?

Paulie doing donuts on the lawn was fucking hilarious, too.

And it looks like AJ is finally becoming a man of sorts. He looked right at home when they were torturing that guy.

Agreed, the gambling thing just isn't Tony.

The recent episodes feel slightly overcooked.

Re: AJ

Whatever about Tony gambling, the bit where AJ participates in the torture seemed really wrong - when has he ever shown any violent tendancies? Maybe you could argue that he was numb inside from achohol and anti-depressants and didn't know what he was doing, but I fully expected him to try and stop it from happening, not the other way around. If this is the start of him following in Tony's footsteps then it's a crappy turnaround.
