Barrow48 I got your CD a couple of days ago - haven't had time to give feedback until now.

The disc said "15 tunes chosen at random by iTunes", so I can only say that iTunes didn't pick very well :)

It was alright until the track with the comedy routine about taking British animals over to Africa to fight the lions and tigers, after that it went a bit wrong. The only track I recognised was I think an L7 one. I skipped most of the rest. Sorry dude.

(edit for idiocy)

I wouldn't mind a tracklisting first, I've been away over the weekend so haven't had a chance to listen the CD anymore. Put it on when I got home from work today though - I'm on the Rootsy track 3 :P

1. Mos Def - Modern Marvel

2. William DeVaughn - Be Thankful For What You've Got (props to Ant73 for this)

3. (The 'Rootsy' one!) Slum Village - 05

This is taken from their latest album, 'Slum Village', and was a pleasent surprise becase I had (like many as the song suggests) writtent them off after their second LP 'proper' Trinity, which was good, but nothing on the 'as good as the title suggests' Fantastic Volume 2 - which you should get if you haven't got it already.

4. Ursula Rucker - Philadelphia Child

5. A Hawk and a Hacksaw - Portland Town

6. Matson Jones - New York City Fuck Off

7. The Roots - Star

8. Ed O.G. & Da Bulldogs - Love Comes and Goes

9. Dave Grusin - Ascension To Virginity

10. Secret Machines - See You

11. The Magnetic Fields - Long Vermont Roads

12. Hanne Hukkulberg - Ease

13. Willy Mason - Hard Hand to Hold

14. Simon & Garfunkel - The Only Living Boy in New York

15. Seu Jorge - Rebel, Rebel

16. Jay Dee (RIP) - Stop

Sadly died a month or so back, this is taken from his frankly bonkers album 'Donuts'. recorded in bed whilst he was dying from lupus. He also produced the afformentioned Slum Village LP Fantastic.

17. Hmmm... I wonder... Marvin Gaye - What's Going On

Thought this was a nice place to leave it since it's a classic and it takes things full circle since track one is heavily inspired by it.

The theme this month was kind of folk-y, soulful stuff, and it's really meant to be enjoyed with a strong, black coffee or a shot of bourbon, depending on the time of day... Feedback please!

9. The Breeders - Cannonball

Cheers. It turns out I recognised the The Breeders track - which is a quality piece of work. Surprised I didn't remember the PWEI one, I was a big fan back in the day (local band innit).

I've kept those 5 tracks off the disc though, which isn't a bad haul really.

Feedback for Ojlim:

1. You Got What You Want - Lashio Thein Aung

Lovely quirky song to start off with a great start you've got to love the stuff that the blogs can dig up.

2. Gravity's Rainbow - Klaxons

This tracks got a great bassline and the chorus is a winner I'm going to look out for them on myspace.

3. (gaming interlude #1)

Haha, classic - I love the audio attrocities site.

4. Groove Is In The Heart - Deelite

This is such a great pop track which hasn't aged at all I could listen to it all day.

5. The Sound Of Failure/It's Dark... Is It Always This Dark? - The Flaming Lips

Thought I recognised the guy's voice! I've been trying to get into the Lips for a while and this was a bit of a grower for me - kinda reminded me of Arcade Fire a bit in places. The breakdown at the end is wicked.

6. Easy - The Commodores

Another classic - I have to say I've never listened to this properly and it's a great track.

7. (gaming interlude #2)

8. Your Kisses Are Wasted On Me - The Pipettes

Didn't like this at the start but by the time I got the chorus it definitely saved the track, vocals like this aren't normally my thing but this is well done.

9. Baptist Blacktick - Pavement

A bit heavy for my liking sounds a bit like Folk Implosion but it's harmless enough.

10. Who's Lovin' You - The Jackson 5

I thought it was the Jackson 5 he (Michael) had a pretty high pitched voice when he was young. This is a vintage 70s sound. Nicely done, great vocals and backing too.

11. (gaming interlude)

12. People In Your Neighbourhood - Bob & The Anything Muppets (from Sesame Street)

Brave choice. -_-

I've got a song by cookie monster called C is for cookie but I've never had the balls to include it yet. If you ever receive my mix I'll put it on. It's quite surprising how much effort go into these tracks.

13. Casbah Wonder - Dunproofin'

Man, I wouldn't have even have picked it out as a bootleg. It's flawlessly done where did you get it from? This was one of the highlights on the album for me.

14. Unravel - Bjork

I find some of Bjork's tracks stunning but I've never owned any of her albums. This is similar to one of her favourite tracks of mine called Unison off the album Vespertine. I really must pick up some albums at some point.

15. (gaming interlude)

16. Work - Gang Starr

This was probably my favourite track in the mix. Superb backing loop and drums. What album is this from?

17. Erotic City - Prince

Ah I dunno, this was OK I've never been a big prince fan.

18. Didn't I (Blow Your Mind This Time) - The Delfonics

I liked the backing to this but the vocals didn't do anything for me - it's get better as the song goes on though.

19. (gaming interlude)

I included a (very famous) audio atrocity from that site a couple of months back. I guess it's just a coincedence you did the same for me here.

Overall this was a great mix, there's plenty for me to look out for here with the highlight being the Gang Starr track. Thanks very much.

Feedback please!

1. Mos Def - Modern Marvel

Haven't listened to this in an age, my favourite track off the patchy A New Danger. The way it beams out with the What's Going On sample about 6 minutes in is magical, Mos Def can really perform when he wants to.

2. William DeVaughn - Be Thankful For What You've Got (props to Ant73 for this)

I love how high the drums are in the mix on this, louder than all the other instruments so it keeps a really chilled feel but with a steady rhythm. Great voice too.

I haven't heard any Slum Village so will need to check them out, the production is great (J Dilla I assume?) with the live instrumentation; the jazz club vibe - it's not really structured like hiphop and the song really breathes. And it does sound like The Roots :(

4. Ursula Rucker - Philadelphia Child

Wasn't so keen on this, not too keen on spoken word/poetry over music. Nice enough music but not something I'd choose to listen to.

5. A Hawk and a Hacksaw - Portland Town

Slightly uneasy nursery rhyme-esque vibe to this. Not something I'd usually listen to but very beguiling.

6. Matson Jones - New York City Fuck Off

This is ace, really driving - is quite conventional indie but the use of cellos really adds an edge to it. Is their self-titled album any good? It's on emusic and if it's more of the same I'll definitely pick it up.

7. The Roots - Star

Not my favourite Roots track but still better than most other bands best stuff, you can kinda get lost in Black Thought's lyrics - definitely underrated as a MC. The dubby outro is really nice too, another album I probably need to listen to a little more.

8. Ed O.G. & Da Bulldogs - Love Comes and Goes

I've been meaning to listen to more Ed O.G., his flow is superb and rides the beat sweetly. The only problem is that there's a Stereo Total track which uses the same sample and it messes with my head hearing it used elsewhere -_-

9. Dave Grusin - Ascension To Virginity

Not too keen on the swinging 60's vocals to this, the guitar solo near the end could have done with being extended too.

10. Secret Machines - See You

Another band I've been meaning to listen more of, VERY Flaming Lips. Short and sweet. Is their other stuff like this? I always imagined that they'd be a bit more wildly proggish.

11. The Magnetic Fields - Long Vermont Roads

Can't say I'm keen on his voice and the tune is quite Casio, but there's certainly something to it which I can't quite place which makes it unerringly addictive.

12. Hanne Hukkulberg - Ease

A little Bjorkish, kinda scattish and loose. Pleasant enough.

13. Willy Mason - Hard Hand to Hold

I'm not sure that I could listen to a whole album by him but this track's easy to listen to, very melodic.

14. Simon & Garfunkel - The Only Living Boy in New York

Not a fan of S&G I'm afraid, there's something quite dated about them and this track never really seems to get going.

15. Seu Jorge - Rebel, Rebel

Extremely charming :P Just the right side of being too novelty and falling into comedy.

16. Jay Dee (RIP) - Stop

Sadly died a month or so back, this is taken from his frankly bonkers album 'Donuts'. recorded in bed whilst he was dying from lupus. He also produced the afformentioned Slum Village LP Fantastic.

One of my preferred tracks from Donuts, which is one of my favourite albums of this year. A real loss to music.

17. Hmmm... I wonder... Marvin Gaye - What's Going On

Thought this was a nice place to leave it since it's a classic and it takes things full circle since track one is heavily inspired by it.

As you point out, cool link back to the opener. Classic track.

Overall, really enjoyed the CD Blackplastic. Good mixture of tunes (which flowed well) and pointed me in the direction of some new music. Top marks, cheers.

Cool, glad you liked it!

I don't think the Slum Village track is produced by Jay Dee actually, don't think he's prodcued any of their stuff since Fantastic... The latest album is on eMusic though.

I also haven't heard anymore Matson Jones, New York City Fuck Off was on this years Rough Trade - Counter Culture album... I know it didn't make the long player though. Judging from the track here I think the album is worth a stab, I hadn't realised it was on eMusic but will pick it up myself once I get some more credits!

Some of the Secret Machines stuff is a bit longer and progressive than the track here but I love pretty much everything they've done and really recommend you check some out.

Goldbricker, I'm delighted you enjoyed the CD.

I've got a song by cookie monster called C is for cookie but I've never had the balls to include it yet. If you ever receive my mix I'll put it on. It's quite surprising how much effort go into these tracks.

I already have it. ;) Do you have the odd DJ Food remix that was released on Warp with Pinball Number Song? I thought it was a bit crap to be honest. I actually have the original version off the Sesame Street Fever vinyl which is a slightly more amusing.

I only bought it for the cover though. Really.

13. Casbah Wonder - Dunproofin'

Man, I wouldn't have even have picked it out as a bootleg. It's flawlessly done where did you get it from? This was one of the highlights on the album for me.

Some blog. Can't remember which one. There are so many. I might have found it through The Hype Machine. Have you heard of it? It's a site that compiles all the mp3s from a fuckload of different blogs. Probably the best website I've chanced upon in the last few months. http://hype.non-standard.net/

But yeah, amazing bootleg. I know mash-ups are sooo two years ago but when you hear ones like these, then it doesn't really matter if they're in vogue or not.

14. Unravel - Bjork

I find some of Bjork's tracks stunning but I've never owned any of her albums. This is similar to one of her favourite tracks of mine called Unison off the album Vespertine. I really must pick up some albums at some point.

Ah, I love Unison too. That's a beautiful song. If you're looking for a Bjork album to start with, I'd absolutely go with Homogenic (which is where Unravel is from). I consider that and Vespertine to be companion albums, Vespertine being the Yang to Homogenic's Ying. Post is great as well.

15. (gaming interlude)

16. Work - Gang Starr

This was probably my favourite track in the mix. Superb backing loop and drums. What album is this from?

It's off Moment Of Truth. When it comes to hip hop, I'm always about beat and production first, because (I'm a little embarrassed by this), I'm usually pretty slow in following the rapper's rhymes. Especially the ones that spit faster than I can type. Sometimes I just turn off and only listen to the bass groove. So uh yeah... that's why I like this one.

I think I found this recently too but never bookmarked it. Will do now.

I completely agree. I much prefer instrumental tracks to anything else but ones like this where the backing is so strong is just my thing.

Meh.

I wonder if Napolean even got my CD.

I received it today, thank you!

Will be listening to it in the car tomorrow.

Currently I'm working hard on my own mix. I know I'm late, but I'm going to try hard to send it out by to tomorrow and still meeting the March deadline. Unfortunately some stuff got in the way and I just couldn't find the time this month.

EDIT: Got the mix finished!

McNeillR is the lucky receiver this month, I hope he will enjoy it.

Instead of the usual dance-antics, this month's theme is a bit different. The title is 'When We Were Young' and it's filled with tracks I liked to play about 12 years ago when I used to be generally good for nothing and get stoned a lot. And a few bits and bobs of my own.

Listening to this is like stepping into a time-capsule for me, so at least I am happy with it :(

Sorry to be a pain, but is there anyway I can find who sent me the CD in october..Ive just found an "unknown" album on my pc dated October 05, and I love it, but I have no idea what it is or who sent it. The first track is by Colour of Fire if that helps...

Somehow Ive only just found this on the pc..

Not heard that Kinnie Star track, the Blackwatch mixes are really lush.

Now I've got that G&D track stuck in my head again.

"AT THE SAME TIIIIIIIIME"

Hope you used the Redanka mix of Last Ghost in Town. :(
