The problem with one hour od fun, is that you never got one hour of fun. The big guns stayed in the pits and waited for the slower cars to clean the track up before they came out in the last 10 minutes to do 3 laps.

This new qualifying format is ace. Everyone's out there and somethings happening, your not sure who's going to get pole until the last minutes. you want to be watching the whole hour to see who get's through. With the old one at a time m'larky, unless kimi was starting first you knew that you only had to watch the last 20 minutes to realistically see the pole taken. Now it's all up in the air.

Toyota dropped the ball and missed the cut. Klien, webber and heidfield all doing a cracking job to be there in the final 10. What's not to like about it ?

Unless of course your too slow to follow more than one car at a time. :D

With Kimi at the back, Fisi and Alonso off the pace and Honda well placed ahead of a poor Toyota it has to make for a good race.

Quite fun qualifying, not exactly what I was expecting, Honda do not seem to be as near to the seering pace shown in testing as I first thought! Still 3rd on the grid for Button is still a decent position.

And ffs McLaren...sort it out, if I was Raikkonen I would be rather annoyed! Oh well I guess Ferrari beckons...

Qualifying Part 1: (15 minutes)

All cars go out on the circuit with a much or little fuel as they like and try to set the fastest time. Drivers with the 6 slowest times drop out to form the last six of the grid in time order. Rest of the drivers go through.

Qualifying Part 2: (15 minutes)

Previous qualifying time erased. Same as before and again the slowest 6 drivers are knocked out to form positions 11-16 on the gird.

Qualifying Part 3 (20 minutes):

Previous qualifying time erased. Drives go out carrying the amount of fuel they will start the race with and try to set the fastest time. Once this session is complete they can then refuel the car to the level it was at when the qualifying started. This is why the circled the track for the entire 20 minutes to reduce fuel in order to get a very quick lap in the last few minutes of the session.

Keep the first to qualifying stints and scrap the last one. Replace it with something that's in keeping with the first two, if not just another round, but using race fuel.

16 minutes of cars cruising was such a come down from the excitement before it.

I like the 3 session idea, it destroys the idea of people waiting till the end to put a lap in. They still do that, but at least now they do it a few times over.

The only problem with it, is that it's hard to follow a single drivers lap. Times and place changes are happening like mad, the cameras, commentators and the computer can't keep up fast enough to keep the viewer informed.

Still, it did make Saturdays viewing much more compelling now, rather than just a warm up session before Sundays race.

The problem when it comes to deciding on how to run qualifying is that whilst you want entertainment, you can't let that entertainment get in the way of the whole point of qualifying: Putting drivers into the correct order on the grid for the race (the most important part of the weekend, let's not forget!)

With a system that leads to wall-to-wall excitement and shocks, you end up with a competely contrived grid and that means you might as well let them pick names out of a hat to decide the grid.

Personally, I'd prefer an hour of utter boredom if it leads to a better race. You don't score points for how you qualify.

Well that was a very promising first race. Schumacher seemingly back on top form... and Alonso STILL beat him. Not to mention the fact that Kimi came from last to third.

Should be a close, competitive season, can't wait.

A great start to the season I thought !

Nice to see the Ferrari and MSC competitive at the start of the season, a great performance from Renault and Alonso as well. I would have liked to see Michael take the win, but Alonso drove a great race and deserved it. Kimi put in an excellent drive to grab 3rd after starting right at the back too.

Shame Button had such a bad start and Barrichello had problems, we definatly havent seen all that Honda have to offer.

What a great GP for Williams as well - both drivers in the points, and what a debut for Rosberg ! Fastest laps, great overtaking moves AND points on your debut - he certainly looks like one to watch !

Nice to see one of the Aguri's finish the race as well.

Could be a classic year, really looking forward to Malaysia now !
