I've had the PAL version since release, but havnt started it yet as I'm half way through FFVII. It sounds ace though and can't wait.

Question: for those that have played Knights of the Old Republic, is the combat in FFXII kind of similar, i.e, pause, issue comands, pause, continue etc?

I'm in a similar postition to you. I won't start it til I've finished the game i'm currently on, but I did have a sneaky look and KOTOR is the game it reminds me of the most.

Its fantastic news as far as I'm concerned. FF is one of my very favourite series and KotOR was my very favourite Xbox game, (having been a big fan of Baulder's Gate).

Lets hope the sum of the parts and all that...

I GIVE UP I CAN'T TAKE IT ANYMORE

What the HELL am I doing wrong?! SERIOUSLY?!

(I'm at the Ogir-Yensa Sandsea)

I have gambits, I've tried all sorts of combos, at the moment Ally <50% Cure on EVERYONE and Balthier is First Aiding.

Vaan is a 'tank' of sorts, sword and shield. Same for Basch.

Balthier has a gun and looks hawt.

Fran has a bow.

I want Penelo to have a bow, but I couldn't afford one yet.

Ashe has a sword.

White Mage: Ashe.

Black Mage: Penelo (with some extra white magic)

Jack of all Mages: Fran (bit of a mix, support character)

Everyone has Cure.

Other people hitting stuff in the face.

So why.

WHY.

If a second tomato comes along and hits someone do I have to run away? I've been grinding levels a bit, mostly 13s, one 14 and one 12 (whom I am trying to level). If, by some miracle, my party doesn't die, then I have to run in circles to regen mana a lot. I have some channelling talents. I'm trying to level everyone together rather than have people left behind. Is this why? I'm stuck too long at the same levels?

Am I just rubbish? How can I just be rubbish when the game is supposed to be doing my healing automatically? Or is 50% too high? But it shouldn't be too high, unless my characters are just too low level. But I HAVE BEEN GRINDING LEVELS. and I'm TRYING TO GRIND LEVELS NOW even though my friend tells me I have a lot of map to get through and I'm just like I can't get anywher ebecause OH NO there's two tomatoes there.

Why do the tomatoes' turns happen quicker than mine? Why can't I predict when they will hit, why can't I predict how long it is until I NEED to heal? Why don't the gambits support this bizarre lack of timescale? Why do they always hit first? Why does First Aid never even hit in time?

WHY EVERYTHING.

WHY DOES THIS GAME HATE ME SO MUCH!? I want to love FF I'm so disappointed and sad :(

How are you supposed to level? Vaan hits lvl 14 so I bring in my lvl 12 char instead (still balancing the party) to use the 13s to support them and level them up so we're all together. Am I meant to be blitzing through with three people and just be higher full stop?

Edit: Oh goodie, fourth party member.

Bit of advice, if you want a bit of a challenge on the final boss don't go over level 50. I did him last night with Vaan, Balthier and Basch all at level 70 and they ripped him apart, was really diappointed. Didn't have to do anything, gambits kept them going, i just watched him go from full health to half in about 15 seconds.

Sounds like your exactly at the same bit I am at sprite and having the exact same problems :( I hate the start of FF games when you are stuck with the shitty weapons trying to grind out that exp to level up, its no fun yet I always persevere :(

Really wouldn't mind giving this another go - if anyone (sick of it) wants to trade their US copy for FFVI (GBA) or sell it to me, let me know.

Have a feeling I just didn't get to grips with the gambits - there has to be more to it than I saw (6 hrs in).

Sprite, I found that once I had finished the Sandsea and the 'dungeon' after it, the game became much more enjoyable. I found the problems I had at the beginning, e.g. too little MP, not enough variety of spells/gambits/money were all far more easily solveable afterwards. i don't know why, I think the game opens up a little bit after that.

sprite I just think you havent leveled enough at the correct places. I spent literally about 1hr on the bridge in Lhusu Mines. That everyone on here recommended for levelling and I went up 3 levels and earned about 15k gil.

I'm about 2hrs of gametime behind you(counting the hunts I have to do) and on finishing the Leviathan I had a party of 6 at L17 or thereabouts. The Judge took me about 30 secs to take down with my 8 hit Quickening chain. find the sweet levelling spots and its easy to be rather overpowered quite early on :(

I'm at lvl18 on all characters, and have just headed south on the map from the start city.

Found that Basch is a hard ass when equiped with a hammer, he hits for >500 half the time compared to the other characters who're hitting 100-150..

I spent a good couple of hours there. See previous Phoenix Down/Penelo rant. :(

Up to a 40 mob chain on the Sandsea though, seems to be good, few interruptions mob-wise and a 4th party member makes levelling easy... which somehow feels like cheating. But I can tackle a group of four now whilst he just bops them over the head which is nice.

Well I aint got a clue then. I must have done a bit more levelling in total though seeing as I'm currently @19hrs playtime. Gonna take down that Cluckatrice tonight, which owned me when I were L11. Lets see him own me when I hit him with a Massive Quickening chain. Bring it on Big Birdy.

About 2 hrs in total in the Lhusu mines and about 1hr 30 in Barhaim(sp) passage. I did do a fair bit of wandering around through the Westersand and Giza plains though. And took down the T-rex a few times. I cant help grinding though as I love the combat and chaining. What I dont get is I really didnt get on with FFXI :(

100 Chain. I feel so proud :(

It's fun when you can do it, and when like, you don't get completely pwned by random tomatoes. Having a fourth party member makes the grinding process SOOO much better - I never tried it with one before, so maybe that's where I suffered :\

Ah there's a possible answer. Lamont was really useful in the mines. Chucking potions around like they were going out of fashion.

Ok! Level 16/17 now. Some turtle thing just got absolutely owned, mwahaha! And all my party have 8-900HP because I got all those licenses. And I have 12000 gil.

I think I'm getting this now :(

Advice to strugglers:

- Let go of the stereotypes a little. Make sure everyone has the ability to cure, and make sure everyone *does*. This way your mana goes further.

- Grind with a fourth party member! wooo!

Edit More!

- Garuda DOWN!

- Demon Wall DOWN!

:(:D

From earlier in the thread.

Once you get a quickening, more than one person gets one or one person gets more than one, then you enter the screen to do your move.

You then get some options on the screen - you can let someone else do their mist attack by pressing the corresponding button. You can also sometimes 'mist charge' which refills your mist gauge and you have the chance to attack again with that, or another character.

Sometimes there's nothing there, and they're all just greyed out, so you have to shuffle with R2 til you get the option to charge or attack with someone else.

It then combos up & you'll get a special attack at the end depending on how many hits you did.

Oh yeah, HELL YES to generic characters - all my characters have the same Green, Black, White, Time and Arcane magicks. It makes them all seem a bit interchangeable on paper, but that can be useful in a pinch. As well as that, some obviously use their magic better than others, it's all about having a balanced party of weapon/magic users who have flexibility as well. Or at least, that's worked for me, and from what I can tell I've been kicking optional bosses' collective asses pretty underlevelled.

and about quickenings. In its most basic form, if you see anything in white with an X, Square or Triangle symbol, press it! if all the options are greyed out, press R2! and then a white option might appear...

Up till now I've been sitting there hammering R2 every time I do one, thinking that it will get me more damage :\

Also - how hard are the Mark II hunts compared to the Mark I ones??! I spend a good 40 minutes or so trekking across the sandsea to fight a Wyvern, thinking that I'd kill it easily, only to get absolutely thrashed by the thing. I put it down to not having any decent weapons against flying monsters, so went after the Croakadile instead. That kicked my arse too, so I ran off to buy some more augment licenses, and *almost* had it when the bastard cast a spell to regenerate *all* its health. Git.
