Metal Gear Solid 2: A masterpiece or an over cinematic bore.

While there's a lot to be said about the cinematic style and ambition of MGS2, there's no doubt I found it a trial to complete. The swordfight at the end is excellent, and yet is over so quickly - it's almost like it was stuck on at the end of the design process. I actually had as much fun with the VR missions as I did with the main game.

I really liked MGS3, despite a lot of problems getting used to the jungle setting (which changed the way the game was played profoundly). I found the cinematics too be a lot more refreshing, and the little tributes to old James Bond movies made that all the better. Also Big Boss is the man :)

One thing that always pissed me off was the fact that every time you got injured you had to pause the damn game and heal yourself using a menu system. Irritating, and for a game that relied so much on unbroken set pieces it came very close to ruining the entire experience.

i went back to my mgs1 save and ended up sitting back and completing the game, and yes, i got the black screen too.

This happened to me too. Worked fine when I booted up my saved game on a PSone. Dammit.

Felt like one giant intro, to me. Always thinking, "right, here is where it must kick in properly!" but it never did. Much like FFX.

Everytime I was watching a cutscene I wanted to play that part, and everytime I was playing I wanted it to be a cutscene.

I can't wait the see the film. I have faith.

Well it wont suck that much

Gaming geek idol and Metal Gear Solid maestro Hideo Kojima wants to let you know, once and for all, that Uwe Boll is not, he repeats, not, going to direct a Metal Gear movie. The latest edition of Kojima Productions podcast puts those nasty rumors to rest with the following response to the German film hack's involvement:

Absolutely not. I don't know why Uwe Boll is even talking about this kind of thing. We never talked to him. It's impossible we would do a movie with him.

There's a bug when playing MGS1 on the PS2 which means that when you complete the game, after the credits instead of getting Ocelot's phone call and the unlockable items, the screen just stays black.

...At least, that's what happened to, me both times I tried it (I reloaded my save file at the last boss), and from what other people have said it seems to be common. No idea if there's any way to get around it.

I ran into this bug on the Essentials Collection version of MGS on a slim PS2. It froze at the final part of the credits. I've got a save just before the escape so I'll be able to unlock all the stuff if I ever fancy playing through the game again.

EDIT:

I saved just before the end so I completed it again and let the ending run its course... this time it worked fine!

Why is nobody commenting on the OP's terrible grammar and spelling?

The idea of using Raiden was to see Snake from a different perspective and further his development as a character. I think it was very effective

You forgot a full stop!

Anyway... How the hell did seeing Snake through Raiden's eyes do anything to develop Snake?

As in MGS and MGS4 they don't really allow Snake any dramatic arc beyond what the player would be experiencing while controlling him- he is essentially the player's avatar after all- and it's only in MGS2 that you actually see much of Snake's personality and beliefs beyond the gruff monosylabism he has in 1 and 4. It's a shame 4 never addressed why Snake stopped caring about passing on who he was to the next generation after it was clearly such a big deal to the character in 2. And you really couldn't have done MGS2's plot with Snake as the lead.

Could have come up with a better plot instead?

A different one, yes. But part of my MGS2 *wub* comes from the PAul Auster references, the postmodern twists, the ambition to deliver a complex thematic package in a game rather than just use the plot as an excuse to tie together "FREAKING AWESOME SETPIECES MAAAAN", as seems to be the case just now.

I'd just like to say that this review, Geoff, pretty much sums up what is wrong with gaming today.

If you couldn't immerse yourself in the game - fine. I'm not a fan of the Final Fantasy series but I would not for one second dare to rate any of those games 5/10. The time, effort and passion put in those games deserve a lot of credit.

The amount of time, effort, originality, fantastic music and variety each time you play MGS1, 2, 3 and 4 are nothing short of brilliant and it's a game crafted with loving care.

I'm sure you'll enjoy your annual updates with slighty better graphics and two more modes far more interesting. It's people like you with all your nay-saying that is killing off any originalty within the industry.

The only games that deserve such low scoring marks are bad movie tie ins and games with no playability at all.

To slate the game for being unrealistic is like saying "Hard Boiled"'s action scenes aren't any good because they're "over the top" .

You don't know what you're talking about mate and seem to miss the whole point of what gaming and immersing yourself in gaming universes are all about.

The game is by no means perfect and it loves itself a little too much if you ask me. That doesn't mean it's shit. Just a bit pretentious. But then, I was pretending to be Raiden so much, I guess I kinda forgot about that after a while.

You can make something to as a high a standard as you like, but you can't make it for everyone. My main issue with the MGS series is that it's completely driven by story, and yet the story is badly written. I can appreciate everything good about all four MGS games, but I didn't enjoy any of them that much. They're great games, but they're not for me.

Plus, 5/10 isn't a bad score, it's an average score. I've give most of the MGS games about the same, but as they're such Marmite titles I wouldn't expect that score to hold any weight with other people.

Still, it's not as badly written as the OP. Wtf is jpperrish?

I have MGS2 on xbox, i might play through it again to see if my opinion changes. The story was utter tripe in my opinion, but there are great moments, and MGS games are so full of little knowing moments, instances where you have to think outside of the box and other times where it plays with your expectations of how a game should be that i feel i have to go back to it and re-evaluate.

My main problems with it before were the cutscenes (predictably) and the fact that the game was such a hub that you were actually on A Hub. It seemed really boring and samey to me. Neither did it offer any of the WOW moments of the first game, or have the same feeling of total solitude.

It did, however, let you kiss posters of big breasted japanese girls.
