I won't say that you're spot on there Il Postino but what you say certainly rings a few bells. I orginally volunteered to write the SNES feature with the intention to cover only the uncharted history of the machine (mostly Japanese stuff) but it was later decided that the article should cover the basic UK info too because that is what most readers relate to. I don't have a problem with that as I understand that a magazine like Retro Gamer needs to strike the correct balance between nostalgia and education if it is to be a financial success. If I had been writing the feature for a website then I would have done things a little differently but then I wouldn't have been paid would I?

Oh and I don't think it's fair to criticise an article just because you can "picture it". Go and read it and then give some feedback. If you still don't like it then that's fine. For the record, quite a few people tell me that they learnt a lot from that SNES feature - but then not everyone knows everything about games, do they?

No it isn't and I'm sorry for that.

My comments were more about "The System", rather than your feature.

When I get a chance I'll read your feature, sorry if I came across as being an asshole, I tend to do that quite a bit.

I've already planned an article on the Satellaview (and the 64DD) and put the line to which you refer into the boxout to see if there was any reader demand for such a feature. Still, you're the only person who's so far picked up on it so I suggest you register on the RG message boards and make yourself heard there. It may even encourage a few more people to support you: after all, these things don't happen unless there is enough demand.

Ash Parkin? :o

Overated?

You guys obviously don't read RG. All contributors names are given in full on the first page.

(well, technically the 3rd, if you want to be pedantic and count the outer and inner covers as pages)

I did a google search on Mr Parker, he seems to be quite a prolific retro writer.

LOL I'd hardly say that a few rants from a couple of (regular) people on one forum means that the feature's been poorly received  Although I am looking forward to how people respond to our new freelancer... That'll be very interesting.

Is this someone i know? Or am i completely off the mark ^_^

I didn't think it was worth a new thread (if there is already a thread about this, I apologise!), but I finally managed to pick up the latest RG Anthology the other day.

Just wanted to say that the layout of all the re-released material is excellent - much more pleasant on the eye than when they originally appeared in the magazine.

I've not read through all of the new material in there yet, but the article about games being converted into board games was nothing short of superb - very detailed indeed! Please pass on my thumbs-up to the person responsible.

You have no idea how happy you've made me by saying that mate. Thanks for the compliment.

No, you're completely off the Mark mate :(

But that puts me on - 567,879 :)

You mean -567,879 :(

Just think, some poor sod may be looking around the world for Robocop on the GX4000. Because of YOU :D

Oh, and slap the stupid person who kept typing "GX400" in the Bloodwytch feature. Which was quite a decent read, btw. I've now reached the Gauntlet bit, which I was most looking forward to reading.

No, I got 567,889 points for working on Retro Gamer :(

Careful Meh, that's sounding dangerously like a compliment :D

Wouldn't go that far just yet

Just don't do the stupid-obvious conversions like Outrun for a few years, PLEASE. Loads of people know how dump those were.

  • 2 weeks later...

Saying that the SNES had sprite scaling abilities irritated me - it had one background layer that could be scaled and rotated.

You could do sprite scaling without it being a hardware feature though, no?

So you're telling me that when enemies die and zoom in and out of the screen that that isn't sprite scaling?
