goldbricker, okay, some feedback...

1 - Blue Jam, can't go wrong with that really.

2 - sort of reminds me of Req, albeit a damn sight smoother. Nice and spacey.

3 - hmm, standard breaks thingy, does the job, but didn't set me excited.

4 - serious quality item this, Blackaliscious, magic ;)

5 - can't really say I got much out of this track. It's got atmosphere, but ultimately left me a bit cold.

6 - the first 20 seconds of this sound a bit like Simon Harris' Super Mario Land, but it turns into some housey affair that although groovy, got me skipping to the next track after about a minute.

7 - bit of early-90s dance, not sure who did it. I could get up and dance to this, but it's nothing special, at least in 2006.

8 - this is rather nice, reminds me of The Postal Service or similar. I like this sort of thing generally, so thumbs up here.

9 - Slick pop, nothing more I can say really.

10 - Babylon Zoo's Spaceman, with all the crap bits taken out, by the sounds of it. It is a good beat, but you get minus points of reminding me of Babylon Zoo, which I'd managed to supress.

11 - Interesting bouncy thing, it did rather lose it's way as it went on, either that or my attention span is shortenning with age.

12 - excellent track this, sort of reminded me of early Tortoise.

13 - tight bit of hip-hop here, can't really go wrong here.

14 - it gets better, more quality hip-hop

15 - and come on, three winners in a row. I must really be feeling the hip-hop at the moment.

16 - ah come on, this is daft, solid bit of oldskool rap, best period.

17 - the Captain Scarlet theme, it's got a good beat to it, how can anyone not like this?

18 - okay, maybe all those decent beats earlier have fed me up, because this track, for it's solid beat, didn't hit home, sorry.

19 - the beat is getting more abstract, and no bad thing. I like this loose beat, yes, good track.

20 - and finally, i think this is Zero-7, or Groove Aramada (always get those two mixed up), goes well with the last track (which I guess is the idea).

Generally, really well mixed, slick bit of production there, and there was a good progression of tracks, if I'm getting technical :P. As far as whether it did it for me, hmmm, the hip-hop was spot on, and the instrumentals were generally very listenable, although a few were a touch on the uninspiring side for me. The weakest points were the overtly dancefloor tunes, they did rather outstay their welcome, seeing as I was sat down with a cuppa. Add to that the couple of wildcards (Captain Scarlet, Blue Jam), kept things from getting a bit too samey.

Many thanks for the mix, it's one I could easily listen to again on a weekend, which I'm guessing is your favourite time, by the sounds of it. A couple of stormers there, but some of it did rather float by without demanding my attention. Superbly produced though :(

A tracklist would be very much appreciated.

Tracklist for Vimster:

06. Lopazz - Blood (Tiefschwarz remix)

07. Future Sound Of London - Landmass

08. The Warmth - You crafty devil

17. Barry Gray - Captain Scarlet - Captain Scarlet "Spectrum" End Theme

18. Sam sever - Fucked up sound

19. Jel - All Around

20. Boards Of Canada - Dayvan Cowboy

A FUCKING FOOR FOOT VAUXHALL CARTON OH FUCKING YES.

I started off with some dancy stuff as I'd read one of your posts that you liked Exit Planet Dust but listening back to the this mix the hip hop section is definitely the strongest part. Track 3 is from the new Layo and Bushwacka album which is called "Feels closer" it's a really great album and has a little bit of everything. The bassline is the winner for me in this track.

I took some gambles on this one but I'm really pleased you liked the Breakstra and Warmth tracks (props again to Jimtendo). I was worried that the Breasktra track would be too long but the drums in it are excellent and it's got a beautiful jazzy feel to it. I'll have to look out for some Tortoise stuff if they sound similar. You can buy the entire Warmth album really cheaply (5$ download from here).

Track 19 the Jel track - I've been really enjoying the album called Soft money there's some cracking instrumental stuff on there. The last track was close but it's Boards of Canada probably the most accessible album on their current album but well worth checking out. I especially liked the strings on this track.

Kelthink - your feedback will be posted tomorrow evening.

Lemme know when you want a tracklist.

Erm.. might be a little while. My DVD rewriter seems to have packed up, that's pretty much my only way of listening to CDs :(. I'll be ordering a new one soon, so I'll get back to you.

Your CD was in when it broke by the way, thank your lucky stars I won't be charging ;)

Feedback for Holly.

Track 1 - Nice start, very trippy. I like how it starts with a few notes stops and then gets going again.

Track 2 - The intro had me fooled on the first listen as I thought it was going to be a CD of jingle-jangle (now’t wrong with that of course). I like this track a lot, great vocals and the song has a dark feel to it.

Track 3 - Ah the spooky carnival track. Good stuff, reminded me of the sort of music I'd expect to hear in a Twin Peaks-esque show.

Track 4 - Monk chanting and eastern warbling, with a great backing track. Sorry to be boring but yet again I like this.

Track 5 - Slowing down the tempo a little with this one, and shock horror I'm not actually that keen on this one. A bit too white noisy for me.

Track 6 - This reminds me of Pink Floyds On The Run (I think that’s the song anyway). Is it Underworld? It's OK probably the only other song on the CD I would skip through.

Track 7 - Ah yes, liked this one so much I cheated used google found the artist, watched the video and ordered the album. ;) It also has made me do very, very naughty things whilst driving.

Track 8 - Now I'm sure I've heard this before in fact I may well own it but my sieve like mind can't place it. A good pacey track.

Track 9 - More relaxed than the last track, still good.

Track 10 - Oriental sounding ambient tune, again I like it.

Track 11 - Sounds like New Order, reminds me of a sunrise during a long car journey in a particularly pretty part of the world (if such things had a soundtrack). Yet another boring thumbs up.

Track 12 - It's all gone scary and dark again! Great way to finish off the CD with the landing announcement bit.

My favourite bits are probably the first 4 tracks and of course number 7. But I really like the CD as a whole, it's on my ipod and the CD will be staying in the car.

Cool, I'm glad you liked it! Tracklisting forthcoming this evening once I look at my iTunes and remember what I put on... to be honest I can only remember what about four of the tracks are from your feedback ;) I'll be quite interested to see which one track 7 was from what you've said about it!

Feedback for Kelthink:

1) Velvet Revolver - Big Machine

I HATED this the first time I heard it but it's been chipping away at my consciense and I actually quite like it now. I used to like a bit of G'n'R back in the day so I guess that's where this has come from.

2) Radio 4 - Absolute Affirmation

Not too bad, quite like the chorus but found the rest of the song a bit generic.

3) Arcade Fire - Neighborhood #3(Power Out)

I do like Arcade fire especially the first track on Funeral and this is one was one of the decent tracks too.

4) Blackalicious - Day One

Ah, I included a blackalicious track myself. This one sounds completely different to the one I did didn't even recognise it at first which album is this from?

5) Scott Walker - 30th Century Man

Sounds a bit like a cross between Johnny Cash and the Doors. I liked this one a lot short and sweet.

6) Edan w/Percy P - Torture Chamber

Never heard of these guys an excellent track definitely my favourite off the mix. Proper tight drums too. Any more info on these guys?

7) The Flaming Lips - One More Robot/Sympathy 3000/21

This must be the third or fourth flaming lips track I've had and they've all been great.

:P Foo Fighters - No Way Back

I've got nothing against the Foo fighters but I've never listened to any of their stuff through choice. This is OK though.

9) Jane's Addiction - Superhero

Not bad, I can take or leave this to be honest.

10) Joy Zipper - Valley Stream

Lovely little track this one the mixture between the male and female vocals works really well.

11) Dizzee Rascal - Jezebel

I've never seen the attraction in Dizzee's stuff but this is the first track I've managed to listen all the way through and enjoy. It's got a great lulling pace to it with quite simple backing track.

12) Tenacious D - Inward Singing

Haha, only Tenacious D can get away with this sort of stuff.

13) Quasimoto - Raw Deal

Yeah I like this track I recognise the name but don't think I've got any of their stuff. Sounds a bit like an interlude especially at the end.

14) The Kleptones - 0900 Daft Purple

I love a good bootleg this must incorporate about 10 different songs. Wicked.

15) Lemon Jelly - '88 AKA Come Down on Me

I've got all the LJ albums so I've heard this before and included it on one of my earlier mixes too. Great track.

16) Ash - Sneaker

Nope I like some Ash tracks but this is probably one of their weakest. Too noisy.

17) The Darkness - English Country Garden

Oh man I can't stand the darkness. This is not as annoying as their singles but the guy's voice gets on my tits.

18) Papa M - World's Greatest Sin

Nice enough but a bit dull I'm afraid.

EDIT: Bonus track too eh? Very flash. This was better than the last track I thought!

A good album overall it's good to hear some new hip-hop and even to hear a good Dizzee track and I'll definitely look into Edan, Joy zipper and Quasimoto for some more stuff.

Thanks again.

I've always found Layo and Bushwacka a touch dull in the past, well not dull, just a bit too slick. That track is perfectly nice, could be by anyone though.

The Tortoise album you want to check is TNT, it's not jazzy as such, but has a similar feel. Really good album.

Jel, yes, superb stuff really.

The BoC track, strange, I listened to that album a few times when it came out, but haven't listened since. I don't like to say it but it never really bedded down in my brain like Music Has The Right To Children, although that's not to say it's bad.

Right, cheers again, top stuff :P

The Blackalicious song is from Blazing Arrow, which also has the infamous Chemical Calisthenics; 'everyone' in the Hip-Hop thread (alright, a few) go on about the Edan album 'Beauty and the Beat', but it is well ace; and Quasimoto is really odd stuff - that took me a while to get into, mainly 'cause of Quasimoto's voice.

This sounds interesting!

The Kleptones - 24 Hours

The album is here. Some good stuff on it too, a great harmonic version of Grandmaster Flash's 'White Lines'.

Thanks but no thanks on that Daft Punk thing. Those accapella's are way too overused and the rest was just a bit messy.

Well done on spotting Underworld (I'll have to look up the Pink Floyd track), and great choice on the Futureshock album, I had it on in the car today and it's great for not quite paying attention to the road...:)

I have to say this month's is partly stuff I don't know so well, cos I had a few tracks I wanted to use (mainly Golddigger and Late at Night) and went through a lot of CDs in search of stuff that would go well with them. So it's somewhat of a relief that you like it! I've actually burned myself a copy for the car so I can enjoy too!

Here's my feedback for my mystery CD...

Track 1 - This is either the theme tune to a TV show, or the intro track to an album by a band called the Hurricanes. I haven't the foggiest which, but anyway, I like intro tracks like these :)

Track 2 - Ace track! I'm looking forward to finding out who this is - I nearly googled it but I thought I'd behave and wait to be told. I've had this on in the car in the mornings to wake me up the past few days, it's lovely and cheerful and I love the line "cos I can't see further than my own nose at this moment". Very singalong, I like lots.

Track 3 - The start of this made me think of Once In A Lifetime by Talking Heads. Unfortunately I don't like her voice at all, and after a while it was a bit bland. I wouldn't skip it, but I wasn't very keen on this one.

Track 4 - Mm, I like this one. The drums at the beginning reminded me of Stagger by Underworld, and when the rest of the tune and the keyboards came in it had a similar kind of mellowness. The guy's voice sounds slightly familiar. If he'd been singing the last track I probably would have liked that better...

Track 5 - Very late 80s / early 90s! I'm sure this is someone I've heard of but I don't know the tune. I quite like it - interesting singer (it's not Alison Moyet, is it?) and cool keyboardy bits. Similar kind of sound to the 80s stuff I usually like (New Order, that sort of thing). And I like "you start bleeding I start

screaming" - very sinister for a fairly cheerful-sounding tune!

Track 6 - Sugarcubes! I always like them. I don't know this one but I think Bjork is great, she's so interesting to listen to, and I love the Sugarcubes sound - I'm much less keen on her solo stuff than I am on their records.

Track 7 - I know this band, and I can't think who it is. She's got a lovely voice. I have the feeling there was a track by them on the last mix club CD I had from Graphico Tabletti. Are they the ones that did the T-Mobile advert tune? Anyhow, this is more of a driving home late at night tune, nice and calm and pretty.

Track 8 - Interlude! Also related to the Hurricanes, whoever they might be?

Track 9 - Beatles track, I don't know much of their stuff but I can recognise them. I'm actually not very keen on their sound usually, but I quite like the tune. Shame about the plonking piano, the guitars are much better. Where chronologically does this go with the rest of their output?

Track 10 - Another morning tune :) Shouting women and very sixties tune but I'm guessing not actually anything like that old. A wicked tune, I found myself singing along to it before the end of the first time through!

Track 11 - Rihanna's SOS - I actually googled this recently cos I'd heard it on the radio a few times. Much as I object to the use of older tracks as backing tracks for new songs, I like quite a few of them. Can't tell whether I like it just for the Tainted Love bits though! Good to play loud in the car.

Track 12 - oh dear. It all seems to have gone wrong. It's a Michael Jackson ballad, I didn't leave it on long enough to find out which one. Much as I like stuff like Thriller, Beat It etc., I can't stand his ballads. Never mind, eh?

Track 13 - another one that didn't last very long, I'm afraid. Sounds like some wailing American male singer off MTV. I actually quite liked the backing track but I couldn't stand the vocals. Get the feeling I should know who it is - Midas Touch sounds familiar.

Track 14 - Depeche Mode, I'm almost certain. I like them, but I've only got Violator so more of them is always welcome. Very much the sort of 80s sound I like. Recommend me an album?

Track 15 - Funny little track, just a few keyboard sounds, but a nice ending, all mellow. I can imagine this being something in my music collection somewhere, sounds a lot like other music I have, but I couldn't put my finger on who it might be. Goes a bit like a demented fair-ground ride towards the end.

So all in all, a thumbs up, although quite a shocking dive on tracks 12 and 13. I'm definitely looking forward to finding out who some of the bands were, not to mention who sent it!

Track 10 - Another morning tune :( Shouting women and very sixties tune but I'm guessing not actually anything like that old.

I only put Louder than a Bomb in at the last minute, one of the best tracks on his new album.

Looks like something I'd put together - we both even included Smiley Faces as a penultimate track

Robbo:

Day One

01. & 02.: What the fuck? Really odd clippets. Completely out of place but I suppose the first one did make me laugh towards the end. Why?!!

03. When I was younger I quite liked Pato Banton and I remember my dad picking up an album of his on the cheap. It was actually completely rubbish, had none of his hit singles on it, but I liked it nevertheless. I didn't like this. Its probably UB40.

04. Funky Shit that I really should know. But don't. But probably actually really do. Mega Ace.

05. Killy Billy

06. Ahh, interesting. Sounds all sort-of 80's dated rock (madness/the jam) and then goes pretty schizophrenic towards the end which the drum and bass bassline. Shame about snippet at the end not being edited.

07. Went completely by me.

08. Wannadies. Obv. I didn't like this tbh.

09. Beck - Game Boy Remixy Thing - Oh no, its not. Just the bog standard version. Nice song, nice album.

10. Katamari

11. Oooh. Its amazing how I can tell within about 10 seconds if I want to turn the track up or not. Reminds me of Sissor Sisters/Elton John (In song structure, not the kitsch-factor). Feels like an unfinished track of sorts - the lyrics seem a bit undercooked but yeah, pretty cool.

12. Yuck! -SKIPPED- after 2 minutes.

13. -SKIPPED- after 1:30 (I think I might've been sent this before...Yeah, Flaming Lips - hate 'em)

14. I really thought this was an early demo version of a Jeevas song, but it aint. Its unmistakabley similar though - Ill have to send you the track. Even the first "Oh Yeah" has very similar acentuation. The track went off the boil at the chorus. Shame.

Day Two

15. 14 minutes 22 seconds. I braced myself here, Got a tea ready and thought, I hope its not Classical. I'd be great if its Afro-Beat. Ahhh Jazz. No tea needed, lie on my bed.

......

Ahh, its live I see - more tribal and pure-drumming than horns. So I was wrong. Interesting stuff.

16. Nice continuation. Pure glockenspiel action. Loved it.

17. Flutes! Soul! Remix! Action! Oh, thats great. Not quite the best track here (it looses a little musical depth after the change to electro and doesn't gain it again) but its close.

18. Nooooooo. Fucking hell, no. No. -3million/10

19. Um, not bad. A bit of a filler track. Preparation for the last track I assume.

20. Bah.

Firstly, no offense, but it seems like a really odd mix this. I mean like someone has pissed about after making your CD and bunged a ton of stuff in at random places. Really indecisive. It could've flowed a lot better I think.

But secondly, it did keep me guessing lots, and I certainly enjoyed the ride.

Cheers,

Mr Do! I had a suspicion it was you after this:

Oooooooh, got the PM. Quite glad who the recipient is, so I'll get planning a cool CD

Not quite sure why I thought that'd be me but there you go. Anyway, I'll definitely be looking up a few of the bands, particularly Camera Obscura, Strawberry Switchblade, and Junior Boys - who are they, out of interest? Anything to do with JBO?

I think I've either been lucky, or my CD collection is really limited, cos every month so far I've had CDs full of stuff that's new to me. Same for this month - the only one I'd heard before was Rihanna, and you've saved me downloading that  So thanks, another good month and some wicked stuff!

I wanted to start with the Magnum theme tune (you know, my avatar), but couldn't find a copy of it. So I googled and found this one on some guy's webspace. For those reading, it's the Magnum tune with some Japanese sounding guy 'naa-naa-naaaah'-ing over the top of it. It cracked me up, obviously not you.

Track 2 is Alan Ford (Brick Top from Snatch) saying 'Come again?'. I thought it made perfect sense after the first track's nonsense. Anyway, on to the music:

03. When I was younger I quite liked Pato Banton and I remember my dad picking up an album of his on the cheap. It was actually completely rubbish, had none of his hit singles on it, but I liked it nevertheless. I didn't like this. Its probably UB40.

UB40? You're blowing my mind. Amerimacka (Feat Notch) by Thievery Corporation. Released 2005.

04. Funky Shit that I really should know. But don't. But probably actually really do. Mega Ace.

You should. Wiggle Waggle by Herbie Hancock.

05. Killy Billy

The Theme from Ironside (linking with the other 80s theme). You can think of it as being from KB if you prefer.

06. Ahh, interesting. Sounds all sort-of 80's dated rock (madness/the jam) and then goes pretty schizophrenic towards the end which the drum and bass bassline. Shame about snippet at the end not being edited.

I don't have anything installed for sound editing atm, sorry. It was MaskThe Beat - Square Off/Mirror in the Bathroom - DJ Food & DK from their Solid Steel vol.1 Ninja Tune mix album.

07. Went completely by me.

Undress Your Mind by LTJ Bukem, taken from Journey Inwards. One of my favourite DnB tracks. Sorry you didn't like it.

08. Wannadies. Obv. I didn't like this tbh.

Yeah, Uri Gellar taken from Before and After.

09. Beck - Game Boy Remixy Thing - Oh no, its not. Just the bog standard version. Nice song, nice album.

Girl, yeah.

10. Katamari

Just to break it down a little before we take it back a few years. Tenuous link with the previous track of 'videogames'.

You'll have to take those reservations up with Bryan Wilson. 'It's About Time' from Sunflower, my favourite Beach Boys album.

12. Yuck! -SKIPPED- after 2 minutes.

Lol. Forever in Blue Jeans by Neil Diamond. I thought that might be a bridge too far. :o

13. -SKIPPED- after 1:30 (I think I might've been sent this before...Yeah, Flaming Lips - hate 'em)

No, not the Flaming Lips. Hanging Around (part 2) by the Polyphonic Spree. I guess they're a bit of a Marmite band, but I'm surprised you've not heard the song before.

14. I really thought this was an early demo version of a Jeevas song, but it aint. Its unmistakabley similar though - Ill have to send you the track. Even the first "Oh Yeah" has very similar acentuation. The track went off the boil at the chorus. Shame.

????

Queen Bitch by David Bowie.

15. 14 minutes 22 seconds.

Glad you liked it  It's Castillan Drums by The Dave Brubeck Quartet. Recorded in Carnegie Hall, 1970ish.

16. Nice continuation. Pure glockenspiel action. Loved it.

Suicide Is Painless (The Theme from M.A.S.H. - another 80s show) performed by Bobby Hutcherson

17. Flutes! Soul! Remix! Action! Oh, thats great. Not quite the best track here (it looses a little musical depth after the change to electro and doesn't gain it again) but its close.

Bus Stop Biddies by RJD2. One of his best.

18. Nooooooo. Fucking hell, no. No. -3million/10

Hmm. Can We Still Be Friends - Todd Rundgren. Off the Vanilla Sky soundtrack. I don't know anything about him.

19. Um, not bad. A bit of a filler track. Preparation for the last track I assume.

Surface to Air by the Chems. (I see Holly used this too this month!). Towards the end of every album they do a long track that builds in a lovely fashion to a massive wall-of-sound cresendo. This is the one from their most recent. If you see them perform it live it would probably change your perspective on it - it certainly did mine.

20. Bah.

Some silly radio phone prank using samples of Jack Nicholson's character in A Few Good Men. I wanted to finish silly, like I started.

No offense taken. If anything, I'm pleased to get a reaction out of you rather than suffer indifference.

Yeah, I agree it could have flowed better, but I was struggling to pop things in that I didn't think you'd have heard of. As the main man in this endevour, I didn't want it to be a CD that you could happily identify 90% of, and in that it looks like I succeeded.

I get the feeling that you don't appreciate the interludes and silly snippets I throw in. Sorry about that. I can't see me stopping, so hopefully the next person will.

Let me know if you want any more tracks / info about the few you liked.

Robbo - still waiting patiently for this, or last month's CD...

EDIT: I guess I'm not allowed that many quotes or something. I'll try and tidy it up. Done. Italics will have to do.
