Robbo - still waiting patiently for this, or last month's CD...

I am honestly burning your CD right now and it'll be in the post tomorrow. I've even download a track off iTunes just for it. No expense spared!

I wanted to start with the Magnum theme tune (you know, my avatar), but couldn't find a copy of it. So I googled and found this one on some guy's webspace. For those reading, it's the Magnum tune with some Japanese sounding guy 'naa-naa-naaaah'-ing over the top of it. It cracked me up, obviously not you.

No it did.....eventually.

UB40? You're blowing my mind. Amerimacka (Feat Notch) by Thievery Corporation. Released 2005.

Is it? Wow, Im quite suprised as I was eyeing up some of their CDs in the Virgin Sale - glad I didn't bother now <_<

You should. Wiggle Waggle by Herbie Hancock.

Makes sense. Which album is this from then? I don't own any of his albums and its probably about time I do.

You'll have to take those reservations up with Bryan Wilson. 'It's About Time' from Sunflower, my favourite Beach Boys album.

God, I'm quite suprised how far off the mark I am with stuff thats not immediately recognisable.

No, not the Flaming Lips. Hanging Around (part 2) by the Polyphonic Spree. I guess they're a bit of a Marmite band, but I'm surprised you've not heard the song before.

Nope, Im certain I've heard it before. Still Polyphoinic Spree are on about the same level as Flaming Lips for me.

14. I really thought this was an early demo version of a Jeevas song, but it aint. Its unmistakabley similar though - Ill have to send you the track. Even the first "Oh Yeah" has very similar acentuation. The track went off the boil at the chorus. Shame.

????

Queen Bitch by David Bowie.

I don't think I've ever listened to a Bowie album. :o Anyway, thats quite amusing to find out what it is for numerous reasons.

Glad you liked it <_< It's Castillan Drums by The Dave Brubeck Quartet. Recorded in Carnegie Hall, 1970ish.

Yeah, its a really nice, clean recording aswell and dense percussion such as this is quite satisfying to listen to and have drift around as something interesting pulls you back in, away from what you were doing otherwise.

17. Flutes! Soul! Remix! Action! Oh, thats great. Not quite the best track here (it looses a little musical depth after the change to electro and doesn't gain it again) but its close.

Bus Stop Biddies by RJD2. One of his best.

Yeah, I thought it might be someone of that ilk. It must be from his second album as I don't recognise it from Deadringer. Might have to delve a bit more into his work.

Yeah, I agree it could have flowed better, but I was struggling to pop things in that I didn't think you'd have heard of. As the main man in this endevour, I didn't want it to be a CD that you could happily identify 90% of, and in that it looks like I succeeded.

True enough. Although as the Bowie track probably proved, I'm someone who has massively obvious holes in my listening habits (in nearly all genres). I don't really listen to any well known "classic album" material so the well known riffs for you, in my head link with some obscure band whos gone and pilfered it <_<

I get the feeling that you don't appreciate the interludes and silly snippets I throw in. Sorry about that. I can't see me stopping, so hopefully the next person will.

Yeah, interludes/skits are not something I like generally anyway - 3ft High & Rising is the only one I can think of that Id actually miss them if they went.

Thanks again,

I'll stick up for Do and say that Human Nature is an ace song.

That's as may be (and linkster said something similar when the CD was on the other night) but the voice often makes or breaks a song for me, and I just can't stand his "ballad" voice.

Mr Do! I had a suspicion it was you after this:

Not quite sure why I thought that'd be me but there you go. Anyway, I'll definitely be looking up a few of the bands, particularly Camera Obscura, Strawberry Switchblade, and Junior Boys - who are they, out of interest? Anything to do with JBO?

I think I've either been lucky, or my CD collection is really limited, cos every month so far I've had CDs full of stuff that's new to me. Same for this month - the only one I'd heard before was Rihanna, and you've saved me downloading that :o So thanks, another good month and some wicked stuff!

Nope, Junior Boys have nothing to do with JBO.

Thanks, I'll have a read up on them, I did like that tune.

Another question... in response to:

02 Camera Obscura - Lloyd, I'm Ready To Be Heartbroken ...this years second great album - out in June called 'Let’s Get Out Of This Country'

What was the first great album of the year?

Heh. The Cosmic Game probably isn't their best. The Richest Man in Babylon is maybe worth a listen. It's more beaty and less 40...

Makes sense. Which album is this from then? I don't own any of his albums and its probably about time I do.

It's the first track on Fat Albert Rotunda. Head Hunters is really the first record you should pick up though. Genius through and through.

There are loads of bootleg albums around the internet, and it's from one of those, or it's a B-side, or something. I have no idea, but I don't think it's on any of his albums. Let me know if you want me to spam you a few choice cuts from the rump. :o

Hmm, I always thought they were a bit fluffy. Haven't heard much of them, to be fair. Maybe I'll give it a god.

Camera Obscura might as well be a Belle And Sebastian tribute band. If their own songs weren't so good they probably would be.

It's on his "The Horror" EP (which is well worth picking up on the cheap)

There's no way anyone can deny that they're heavily influenced by B&S. I do like Camera Obscura by the way.

Yeah, they did sound very familar. But thankfully with their new album, they are creating a new sound for themselves. At least from what I've heard, and the female vocalists sound gorgeous as ever.

You got your CD yet, Napole0n? Sent it a while ago now..

Yes, I received it yesterday. I listened to about half/75% of it so far. I didn't like the first 3 tracks at all, was afraid it turned out to be a disaster. Fortunately it picked up after that with some nice tracks. After I've heard all of it I will post some more opinions!

OK, was just getting concerned that it might've got lost in the post. Looking at your previous posts I tried to make it a mix of stuff I thought would appeal and stuff that would be a harder sell, looks like I got it about right.

Feedback for Napole0n:

First things first... This is by far the most polished CD I've received and the only yet that is properly mixed. What applications have you used for this? I've seen you have listed Acid Pro, Sound Forge and Maya Unlimited but I don' know what any of those do (my hunch is that Maya is a 3d graphics studio?)...

Generally this is a pretty progressive mix, a bit more so than I tend to listen to these days (although this would have been right up my street a few years ago). It reminds me a lot of someone like Danny Howells.

1. Sun Control Species - Push Through

Nice big tech-y beat and sparse production. A good opening track.

2. Phonique - For The Time Being

I am a fan of a couple of other Phonique tracks ('Where the Party's At' and 'The Red Dress') and really ike this two. It's quite a bit more progressive but has a nice warm sound. It also sounds like it's got the strings from 'Strings of Life' buried in the mix.

3. Quivver - Brothers & Sisters

More prog, still nice. I've heard a fair amount of Quiver before although nothing I can remember the name of. This has a nice melodic edge to it, though it could doing with being pitched down a fraction in my opinion.

4. Perfect Stranger - Bliss

Quite cool distorted acid lines in this although I felt it's perhaps not as strong as the previous tracks.

5. Volition - The Spell

This is pretty much full on trance and very Gatecrasher. Enjoyable, but really not my bag since I went off this kind of thing a few years back.

6. Dean Coleman - Hypnotic

Bit housier now and little bit funkier, this is a bit more my thing.

7. James Monro, Dick Trevor - Wash Out (Extended Mix)

Progressive house, this is not bad but I find it a bit less memorable than some of the best tracks here.

8. Yotopia - New Born

A little trance-y and a little fast for me.

9. Pixel - Happy Lepsia

Still pretty fast, but I acually enjoyed the harsher sound. The vocal sample is quite good too. This sounds pissed off, and I like that.

10. Starecase - Bitter Little Pill (Little Bit of Pill Mix)

I'm sure I've got a couple of Starecase tracks lying around somewhere... I liked their mix of Beber and Tamra's 'You Wonder' from a few years back too. This is good, but I felt that maybe the synth-y noise could have done with been higher in the production mix. Still, a good closer.

Overall I thought this was really cool, even if not all of it is completely to my taste. The mixing was superb and on the whole the mix felt coherent, warm and polished. It's good to hear some tracks in this vein that I like since I rarely buy anything like this anymore. Thanks!

Glad you liked it, even though the style wasn't maybe 100% to your taste ... always a difficult thing I suppose.

For the mixing I mainly use Acid Pro. Acid Pro is a loop-based sample-sequencer program to build up songs but as it got a beatmapper (a tool to map the beats to the project tempo so that you can sync tracks) and multitrack mixing it's also great for general mixes like this. Basically you take a track, use the beatmapper to find the BPM so that it can be synced and then you just 'draw it in' on the timeline. Where tracks overlap you do a crossfade or other effect and that's about it. It's quite a lot of work, but it's very flexible and you can achieve some great results. This was actually the first real 'mix set' I did, before I used to just crossfade tracks over into each other without making the really blend in.

Soundforge is used for sample editing and cutting up the final project in seperate tracks. Maya and Photoshop were used for the cover.
