I did listen to it once, recognised a fair bit (though not Aphex Twin which has suprised me) but still without the ability to listen again :D

I'll give feedback eventually though, honest.

No worries dude - look forward to it when your DVD is feeling better.

01. Services - Element of Danger (MSTRKRFT remix)

Not the best of starts, this type of track just doesn't really click with me. I've heard other MSTRKRFT remxies, like the Bloc Party one and I like that. I really hate how this tracks starts off, with that bell sounding percussion. And then the rock guitar kick in, and the horrible vocals. But things get much better, with...

02. Jamie Lidell - When I Come Back Around (Freeform Reform)

...this track. And I this is much more funky, very Prince-like. I've got this track, and love it. Superb beats, great vocals from Jamie, and a superb remix all round. It adds so much to an already fab song.

03. Tiga - Louder Than A Bomb

But this is the BOMB! I couldn't believe it was from Tiga, having already heard other tracks - like The Ballad Of Sexor. But this sounds so different, it sounds like someone has remixed one of his tracks. Made up of acid house and electro, with a rap over the top this track kicks hard :D FANTASTIC! (Oh, it's a reworking of Public Enemy's original, I didn't know that).

04. Paris - The Devil Made Me Do It

I hate the very start of this, with it's rock guitars. But this soon gets much, much better, and I love the drum beats. Mmmm... classic hip-hop from 1989. Very good indeed, and I like it when you hear just the drum solo.

05. Del The Funky Homosapien - Press Rewind

This is the shit as well, I love the repetative piano sample, and great beats again. With this track, and the one above. I like the rapping as well, it blends well with the music. Excellent.

06. Dr. Octagon - Blue Flowers

This is ace as well, with it classical overtones. Superb beats as well, and the rapping agin is ace. I love the sexy scratching near the end as well. Superb again.

07. Soul Position - Mic Control

I love the Dub like start to this, it onlys last a second or two. But this soons gets going, with lush beats and a nice piano sample. Nice rap as well, all good stuff.

08. Freddie Foxxx - Real Nigga Shit

This starts off superbly, with some awesome sounding shit going on. The beats are ace, the rap is a big harder (and takes over the song a bit) so I'd probably prefer the instrumental. I'd like this track, if it left over minute, just to wig out instrumental style. As like I said this track, has an awesome beat.

09. Mr. Lif - Get Wise 91 Ft. Edan

I like Mr. Lif's Wanted track, but this isn't quite so good. It seems a bit messy, the rap seems more important than the beats/music. It's not completely crap, just not as good as the other tracks above. I do like certain bits of this though, I need to remix it into something better!

10. The Roots - Thought @ Work

Again this is the same as the Mr. Lif track, a bit messy and not really my type of hip-hop.

11. Tortoise and Bonnie 'Prince' Billy - Cravo E Canela

I've never really been a Tortoise, or Prince Billy fan. So sadly this doesn't set my musical taste buds glowing :(

12. Steely Dan - Reelin' In The Years

Ok, I know this song of course - who doesn't? It's ok, but it's the wrong side of rock for me. Never mind eh.

13. Blackalicious - Powers

I'm sure I recognize this as well, again it's ok and nice to listen to. But I wouldn't rush out, to get the album. I'd rather listen to Jamie Lidell again.

14. Gnarls Barkley - Smiley Faces

It's Mr Popular! This is alright, but it's not going to make me a fan of his records. Nice ending though!

15. Herbert - Harmonise

And we end, with the unmistakable beats of Herbert. Up, and down! I love Herbert, so thankfully we end this compliation on a big high :)

All, in all a pretty good cd. It's saved by some awesome hip-hop, and Tiga's BOMB! Thanks a lot bph, I'm always looking to hear more hip-hop :P

No no no! It's just been the worst possible time for me to decide to enter the club really. I'm in the middle of revising for Finals. I'm not really the sort to revise whilst listening to music, and I'd feel a bit unsatisfied writing a review based on a half-listen. I checked out the first 4 tracks the other night, and so far so good. It's interesting - and no, that's not meant in a dismissive way! It's a good way to start a mix CD at least: concentrating on song structure and textures, and keeping an engaging but not static pace. In practical terms, it seems to me that there's certainly been a lot of consideration on how the tracks hold together, and the whole musical presentation process. Which beats just choosing what songs you're 'into' at the time of listening, or which 'mean' something to you (but probably not to the anonymous listener), or striving to cater for all possible configurations of taste and chucking a load of heterogeneity and a token hip hop track together. To sum up, it beats my novice's attempt (at starting a mix at least), which was to chuck in a series of really abrasive tracks to start with, before chickening out and performing a truly unconvincing volte face and sticking 'Mambo Sun' in to calm things down. If you happen to have stuck in a few hip hop tracks later on because everyone in this folder seems to casually import it into their tastes, please ignore the above  . Seriously, that's half the point of an internet exchange of music, really - balancing your personal taste and trying to interfuse it with that of others.

Anyway, more later - probably Friday sometime.

Thanks for the Cd Alan, here's what I thought:

Track 1. Fantastic opener. I didn't think much of the intro but when it finally kicks in its excellent. I've listened to this one at least 20 times already and even googled the lyrics to find out who it is. I've already ordered the album.

Track 2. Didn't think much of this one, a bit dull, although the little background harmonies were quite nice.

Track 3. Found this one boring as well, went on too long and didn't seem to go anywhere.

Track 4. Another great one, I loved the singers voice really earnest and heartfelt. Another one I'll be checking out.

Track 5. Nice shimmering guitar sound.

Track 6. Quite liked this one as well.

Track 7. Supergrass - She's So Loose, its been ages since I listened to I Should Coco.

Track 8. Grandaddy - Stray Dog And The Chocolate Shake, another one I recognise, great song.

Track 9. Really liked this one, nice and chilled and the glitchy background noises were not to harsh.

Track 10. This was really crazy sounding, but in a good way. I listened to it a couple of times before I made out the singer singing the word katamaridamacy. Is this from the first game or the sequal.

Track 11. Lovely finish.

Overall apart from track 2 and 3 I really liked it. Lots of stuff I've never heard before, mixed with a couple of great tracks I hadn't heard in a while.

Ahhh finals, I see now. Well, sorry to be a total pain and all.

Are you doing some sort of humanities subject by any chance, or maybe art history? Sounds like it to me :D

Right, well the best of luck to you.

Yeah I have, it was huge.

I keep leaving it in the car though. Can't really take notes in there, so I'll do a track by track just as soon as I remember to retrieve it :(

Smart. I'll stick a tracklist up tonight ^_^

No, hasn't turned up yet, I'll let you know when I get it.

Hmmm... Maybe I should send it again, I posted first class it on Tuesday last week... Let me know if you still haven't got it and I'll burn another copy and pop it in the post again.

Track list in-line!

Thanks for the Cd Alan, here's what I thought:

Track 1. Fantastic opener. I didn't think much of the intro but when it finally kicks in its excellent. I've listened to this one at least 20 times already and even googled the lyrics to find out who it is. I've already ordered the album.

1: Mew/Fox Cub // The New Pornographers/Jackie, Dressed in Cobras

Not Mew's finest moment, but there's something about it that I find really dreamy. With the beat speeding up towards the end, I felt I had to follow it with something raunchy - The New Pornographers fit the bill perfectly.

Track 2. Didn't think much of this one, a bit dull, although the little background harmonies were quite nice.

2: Doves/Shadows of Salford

The wrong choice in hindsight; I was looking for a swift comedown so the whole thing wouldn't be predictable, but this is too pedestrian.

Track 3. Found this one boring as well, went on too long and didn't seem to go anywhere.

3: Tool/Intension

Aww, I really liked this one - one of the stand-out tracks from the new album for me.

Track 4. Another great one, I loved the singers voice really earnest and heartfelt. Another one I'll be checking out.

4: American Music Club/I've been a mess

Excellent taste, sir! They're a perfect blend of melancholy, tinged with a hint of optimism.

Track 5. Nice shimmering guitar sound.

5: Radiohead/Permanent Daylight

From one of the EPs. I like the way they buried the vocals - i've got a weird thing for tracks like that.

Track 6. Quite liked this one as well.

6: Sparklehorse/Tears On Fresh Fruit

An excellent album - check it out. This is just about as rocking as they get; everything on this album is worth a listen.

Track 7. Supergrass - She's So Loose, its been ages since I listened to I Should Coco.

7: Supergrass/She's so Loose

Between I Should Coco and Ash's 1977, I can't imagine any other two albums that so perfectly conjour up summer for me.

Track 8. Grandaddy - Stray Dog And The Chocolate Shake, another one I recognise, great song.

8: Grandaddy/The Stray Dog and the Chocolate Shake

I love this one. Daft and clever.

Track 9. Really liked this one, nice and chilled and the glitchy background noises were not to harsh.

9: SchneiderTM/Frogtoise

Again, try some of their other stuff; The Light 3000 (a cover of The Smiths' There is a Light That Never Goes Out) is excellent, as is Reality Check from the same album as Frogtoise.

Track 10. This was really crazy sounding, but in a good way. I listened to it a couple of times before I made out the singer singing the word katamaridamacy. Is this from the first game or the sequal.

10: Katamari Damacy/Katamari On The Rocks

The (extended) theme tune from the first game. I want to hug every musician who played on this album.

Track 11. Lovely finish.

11: The Mamas And The Papas/Dream a Little Dream Of Me

We ended a gig with this some time ago.

Overall apart from track 2 and 3 I really liked it. Lots of stuff I've never heard before, mixed with a couple of great tracks I hadn't heard in a while.

I'm made up that you liked it. I wasn't very coherent this time, sorry!

Thanks for the review, Tony! I'll post the tracklist when I get in tonight. The first track was made from two tracks spliced together i'm afraid, so you may want to cancel that order!

It's ok I googled the lyrics to the faster part. I was actually thinking of getting the Mew's album as I really like the Zookeeper's Boy, is it any good?

I'm made up that you liked it. I wasn't very coherent this time, sorry!

I actually thought it flowed quite well and I think my strong dislike of tracks 2 and 3 might be because of how good the New Pornographers track before them was.

All, in all a pretty good cd. It's saved by some awesome hip-hop, and Tiga's BOMB! Thanks a lot bph, I'm always looking to hear more hip-hop :)

Thanks for your comments Mr Do, I didn't expect you to like the hiphop so I'm glad you enjoyed it. The Tiga track was a suprise to me as I haven't really heard anything like that by him before; the album's a little patchy in places but there are definitely some stormers on it.

tonymg: Some comments on your CD (which I have been enjoying) will be posted up tomorrow, apologies for being so rubbish.

I'm confused! Where did it turn up?

Reception. I normally have to collect packages from there, but didn't get a delivery notice as per usual.

Had a quick listen yesterday, recognized Cut Copy and the Go Team (I think). They're probably my favourite tracks out of the lot. I'll give better impressions, when I have some time to listen to it properly at the weekend.

Here's the tracklist for my CD:

1. The Stooges - Down on the Street

2. Sereena Maneesh - Beehiver II

3. The Flaming Lips - God Walks Among Us Now

4. T. Rex - Mambo Sun

5. Belle and Sebastian - Your Cover's Blown

6. Mercury Rev - Car Wash Hair

7. Slint - Nosferatu Man

8. Television - Friction

9. Animal Collective - Did You See the Words

10. Cocteau Twins - Aloysius

11. PJ Harvey - Working for the Man

12. The Rosebuds - Boxcar

13. Meat Puppets - Split Myself in Two

14. Destroyer - Rubies

It's a bit disjointed, and there's a lot of oldish stuff on there, but it's good oldish stuff in my opinion. Vimster, review's coming soon!

#1 alright indie track

#2 nice mix of male and female vocals on this one

#3 Like this one, good riffs and punchy vocals

#4 Hang on, this is Ash, right? Haven't paid a whole lot of attention to Ash since Meltdown, but it's been long enough for me to get excited about new material. Yeah, this is a catchy little tune, can't quite place the sound with previous albums.

#5 Don't like this one, bit of a confusing mish mash of genres and the vocals do really do it for me either.

#6 A song about Atari love. Awwww. Yeah, this one has a good vibe.

#7 There's usually one song on the unmixed CDs that makes me think aaaargh, stop. This is it.

#8 okayish

#9 Don't really like ths one, sounds kind of old.

#9 Yay, Cut Copy. I put this track on my January Mix CD. Cut Copy are one of those bands that should be way more popular than they are - they have a catchy indie sound and they have some good dance tuneage also, I don't know any other bands like that. Their indie stuff sort of reminds me of the Strokes.

#10 Nice instrumental tune, ends kind of abruptly. Could do with some vocals maybe.

#11 This tune is a bit like like Mansun, except milder. Not bad.

#12 Go Team? Still haven't got their album, but I will. Yeah, this is proper feel good music.

#13 Another oldie, by the sounds of things, don't really like this.

#14 And we're in the eighties now. Fast forward time!

#15 Boring.

#16 Is this M83? I know I've heard this tune before and it kind of sounds like them. Yeah, it's pretty good this one.

#17 This track would go down well at a party, but not the sort of tune I'd have on my MP3 player.

Overall, it's an alright CD, I'm still in my "indie music is boring :( " phase so my favourite tracks were all the ones from bands I'm familiar with. :P You should send out more Cut Copy stuff, they need some more exposure on here. Thanks.

1. Pavement - Elevate Me Later

2. Serena Maneesh - Drive Me Home The Lonely Nights

3. Love Is All - Make Out Fall Out Make Up

4. Arthur Baker feat. Tim Wheeler (of Ash fame) - Glow (Radio Edit)

5. Lo Fi Fnk - Change Channels

6. The Spinto Band - Untitled Track

7. The Flaming Lips - Free Radicals

8. Architecture In Helsinki - It'5!

9. The Chemical Brothers - Golden Path

10. Cut Copy - Going Nowhere

11. Johann Johannson - 10 Rokkstig

12. Broken Social Scene - 7/4 (Shoreline)

13. The Go! Team - Huddle Flash (Kevin Shields -v- The Go! Team)

14. Johnny Boy - Fifteen Minutes (not old, just brilliant... Oh well...)

15. Prince - I Would Die 4 U

16. Secret Machines - Alone, Jealous and Stoned

17. M83 - Teen Angst

18. The Jesus and Mary Chain - I Hate Rock N Roll

Lol, some of your comments made me laugh. Not much of a theme this month, I just tried to put together some really feel good stuff and was attempting to make sure I have no filler - virtually every song on here is a 5 star in my iTunes... Shame you didn't like a bit more! The fact that you wrote Secret Machines off with one word ('boring') almost makes me want to cry, but there you go, everyone's tastes are different. And you're damn right about Cut Copy (I has a related rant on my blog here.

"16 Late Bangers" it said on the CD.

I listened to your CD start to finish whilst going far too quickly along Her Majesty's motorways. It was late, as per the instructions. Just refreshing my memory now whilst typing this, and it doesn't quite have the same impact, but it's all good.

1. Overture - Viktor Vaughn

This is what I like to start, a nice skit.

2. Vaudevillain - Viktor Vaughn

Massive. Never heard of him. Doesn't sound anything like his brother out of Swingers. Want more.

3. Magic Stick - L'il Kim feat. 50 Cent

Yeah, also good. Needs to be REALLY LOUD though. Struggled to get into Fiddy, and this probably won't inspire me, but still a solid track.

4. New World Water - Mos Def

I don't know enough about the rap side of hip hop to know what this sub genre is called. I will simply call it 'bo'.

5. Space Hoes - Dangerdoom

As soon as this started I thought 'Format?'. Apparently not. As good as him and Abdominal in my opinion. I will be checking these people TWO TIME <explosion.jpg>

6. Any Man - Eminem

Knew who it was of course. The snappy style reminds me of a 'freestyle' session of his I heard a few years back. I'd guess this is really early stuff? I never had the Slim Shady LP or anything before that.

7. What Would You Do - Paris

Really enjoyed the Bush intro. Simple and well done. Great backbeat, really tight. Oooh, love the energy of the rap. Makes me think of Busta, with maybe +50% IQ. Excellent.

8. Microphone Masters - Mobb Deep feat. Canibus, Xzibit, Killah Priest & Method Man

Didn't think all that much of this to be honest. I guess it was the drop in tempo from almost everything previously. Solid though, just not making me bop.

9. Fast Shadow - Wu Tang Clan

Genius. Is it from an album?

10. Criminology - Raekwon

Good flow from the Wu. (Oh, he was in them I see :( )Bit angry for me.

11. Niggonometry - Canibus

Huge. I recognise the backtrack from a Chemical Brothers mix album. What's it from?

12. Okay - Redman feat. Erick Sermon

Yeah cool, bit angry though.

13. McNasty Filth - Jaylib feat. Frank & Dank

WE ARE IN THIS MOTHER FUCKER. Nice.

14. Bad Boy for Life - Black Rob, Mark Curry & P. Diddy

blastoff.jpg

15. Follow the Leader - Eric B & Rakim

Moody. Bit repetative. mediumboom.png.

16. The Truth - Handsome Boy Modelling School

Ah, now you're talking. White friendly hip-hop. Great track from a great album. Good finisher.

Really enjoyed the CD. Sorry to take so long to get back to you. Thanks a lot. :)

2. Vaudeville Villain - Viktor Vaughn

Massive. Never heard of him. Doesn't sound anything like his brother out of Swingers. Want more.

Definitely check out the album of the same name. It's a solid forum recommendation from the hip hop threads and one of my favourites at the moment.

3. Magic Stick - L'il Kim feat. 50 Cent

Yeah, also good. Needs to be REALLY LOUD though. Struggled to get into Fiddy, and this probably won't inspire me, but still a solid track.

Fiddy only has limited applications, mainly this and his track Catch me in the Hood which is so full of gun noises it's just absurdly brilliant.

6. Any Man - Eminem

Knew who it was of course. The snappy style reminds me of a 'freestyle' session of his I heard a few years back. I'd guess this is really early stuff? I never had the Slim Shady LP or anything before that.

Yeah it's early, from Soundbombing II on Rawkus.

7. What Would You Do - Paris

Really enjoyed the Bush intro. Simple and well done. Great backbeat, really tight. Oooh, love the energy of the rap. Makes me think of Busta, with maybe +50% IQ. Excellent.

Paris is very political and (obviously) not the biggest fan of Bush. Aside from that I don't know a lot about him.

9. Fast Shadow - Wu Tang Clan

Genius. Is it from an album?

It's off the Ghost Dog soundtrack.

13. McNasty Filth - Jaylib feat. Frank & Dank

WE ARE IN THIS MOTHER FUCKER. Nice.

This is a proper banger. I love it.

14. Bad Boy for Life - Black Rob, Mark Curry & P. Diddy

I fucking hate Diddy with a passion but this track is brilliant because the bravado in the lyrics contrasts so well with the way the riff sounds like it's about to snap. It's definitely on the soundtrack of the theoretical film version of the novel I've written. Possibly on the trailer.

Really enjoyed the CD. Sorry to take so long to get back to you. Thanks a lot. :)

Glad you liked it, I think this has been one of the best received CDs I've done.

I knew I'd heard it before. Ghost Dog as in Forrest Whittaker with Pigeons for 120 minutes?
