The Golf Thread

Here be the golf thread, where we talk all things golf.

-----

So it all kicks off later today and most of the build up has been about the lengthening of the course (7,445 yards this year) Ouch for the shorter hitters.

Woods is defending champion, Mickelson wiped the floor with everyone last week and all the usual suspects will be lining up. Who's your money on?

Anyone? Golf? ...

Micko's out, 'cos he shot his load last week. Woods has been shit lately (last two tournies), what with his dad and that.

Sergio then. He's been using a new ball this year... driven the fucking thing 400 yards a few times, so he has. All he needs to do is fix his putting and he'll be sorted.

Why don't the BBC utilise their Interactive service for this like Wimbledon? So you can follow a group like on Sky.

Doesnt seem like theres much interest in golf amongst the forumites

Out of interest if anyone does play, how do you go about it? How much does it cost to say buy a set of trainng clubs or visit a club? Be useful to know for some I'm sure.

I go about it dreadfully badly.

My first set of irons was about £75 second hand, with a cheap bag on top of that. Putter was extra. Didn't use woods to start with. Current Driver was £210 I think. They go up to a lot more. Current good irons with custom fit were about £550.

Costs between 12 and 40 quid to play, sometimes it's silly money but anyone who's paying over 30 per round will know all this.

Trip to the driving range is about £3 and great fun.

Lessons are critically important. You cannot play golf "naturally" in any way.

I've never had a lesson. Well except tips from people I play with. I'm sure you're right though I would probably play more consistantly with a few lessons. Not been a member of a club for a few years now. I think it was about £350 for the year at the club I played.

I use the clubs I got from my brother as he's always buying new ones. £15 a round if I play with him now.

I can't be the only one starting to get excited about this. Friday 7am, who's going to be there?

We rolled over Team USA 18½-9½ last time, I'd imagine this time it will be a lot tougher even though the US team have a lot of rookies. The weather might be interesting come Friday aswell with the wind possibly being fairly hefty.

Most important is of course the uniform:

Team USA to win, 14.5, to 13.5. Dramatic final hole singles win for Tiger to seal it. I'm a USA supported, by the way. I'll be watching the entire thing Saturday and Sunday, work Friday though.

I have no idea how the ticketing works for the Ryder Cup, but at the Open you can always get tickets on the day. I imagine that will vary wildly depending on weather.

I prefer the foursomes to anything else, it was a shame that Idiot Torrence kinda ruined the singles last time out. He also has the honour of being the worst commentator in all of sport.
