When is the President's Cup held then? And does it get any UK coverage (BBC or Sky)?

And just a final note about Faldo (I'm begining to feel like an apologist for him!), I think saying he wasn't taking it seriously was massively unfair - he came across to me as somebody who was really caught up in the emotion of the event (didn't he nearly cry at one of the press briefings?), and I just sensed a real enthusiasm from him.

I do think his reasons for accepting the job were possibly to gain him a bit more adoration and fame over here and Europe in general (had he won), and also that his brow-beating may have had to be tempered somewhat to avoid antagonising his US-employers (whomever he does commentary for), but I do think he took it very seriously.

I didn't necessarily mean not seriously, sorry that was a poor choice of word - I mean more that he appreciated the friendly nature of the competition and kept his light-hearted approach. Of course he got into it. The presidents cup is on Sky, I can't remember who is the captain anymore - Couples maybe? It's a fantastic event, USA verus the rest of the world.

My point about them being US tour winners was that it's regarded as being a much harder tour to win on, and the quality in the field goes deeper than in Europe, and I think that's fair. Plus, the courses are set up differently over there, the focus is certainly on holing out from 8-10 feet more than anything else. I just don't think the middle order was weak really, and i'm certain they'd all win on the European tour. It's not really that they don't travel well, it's that they don't travel. :(

Oh, and as for Europeans on the US tour, Stenson, Karlson, Casey, Poulter, Garcia and Harrington all play over there as much as possible. you'll see them all play on the European tour just to keep their Eligability to play on both. Everyone WANTS to play the US tour.

Carl Petterson would have been a much better pick than Casey or Clarke or Poulter IMO, irrespective of how well Poulter ended up doing. :(

It's a fair point about the US talent going much deeper, I think that's been the way for a very long time. Is it much more accessable in the States for people taking an interest in becoming pros? As for all the US team potentially winning on the European Tour, I don't know. As you say, the courses in the US are set-up very differently to elsewhere, and the style of golf isn't the same.

And of course everyone wants to play on the US Tour, it's where the money is; I wonder if the European Tour had the same amount of prize money and media coverage we would see migration of Americans coming over to play it? Would help raise the general level of play I guess. It'll never happen, mind.

Ah, golf is back this week. ;)

Anyone else going to be watching the Matchplay? I imagine the viewing figures will be about 20 times what they would have been without him making his comeback. The final day is always a bit strange to watch, seeing commentators somehow trying to fill the hours of space in between the two groups on the course, but I love it all the same.

I'll be watching tonight, along with the football. Woods looks like he's been in the gym even more than usual and says his short game is better now.

Did anyone else catch Tiger's win yesterday? Completely responsible for my current level of tiredness, but it was just awesome. Masters in 2 weeks, so for once I won't have to put up with the truly awful American feeds and Johnny fucking Miller.

Which channel were showing it? Setanta have bagged a lot of the golf this year haven't they, the whole US Tour?

Yeah, it was Setanta. Ken Brown in the Setanta studio and about 2 million ad breaks. Terrible coverage, though they didn't miss a shot of Tiger's on the final day. They have everything except the majors and WGC events - just about the only thing that justifies my subscription.

I did! I'm loving the amount of golf coverage I'm seeing since moving to the US, I'd been following it on and off for the weekend, seeing Tiger steadily climbing the boards and then just sat back and enjoyed the final day, the way he pulled it off even after hitting those bunkers, it all came down to the putts on the 15th and 18th really didn't it.

Amaze!

Don't buy from ebay! The amount of stories i've heard of fake clubs is untrue. Oh and if your starting out, definitely book a course of 4-6 lessons with a pro, makes the world of difference. You'll just learn bad habits and be stuck with them otherwise.

MASTERS THIS WEEK.

Suffice to say i'm pretty excited after playing 36 holes yesterday. So long as the weather holds up, i'm expecting an excellent weekend.

In terms of beginners clubs, you can get very good deals on clubs from a couple of seasons ago, and iron technology doesn't really change year on year, not in any way you'll notice. I'd get some entry level 2006 Mizuno or (if you can) Ping clubs as beginner sets. I saw some Callaway X-20's on sale, new for just over 200 the other day, and they're an excellent club.

If you are after some clubs for starting out then you can pick up a good enough set for around £50 - £60 from the likes of Quality Save with a bag included. They aren't up to the amazing standards of modern clubs with steel shafts but the perfect opportunity for those starting out just to see if you even like the game. I started with a set and though I have replaced most of them I still have a couple of irons and the putter from 3 years ago.

Even a quick browse on eBay throws these up:

Getting back to the Masters it was a pretty decent opening. Tiger having temper tantrums on the 12th because he isn't playing well (yet after all these years you would think he'd get used to failing on the first day), that 19 yr old kid playing for the first time, the new layout etc. Looking to be a very interesting weekend.

Tiger hit the ball better than anyone yesterday, by a long way. Same story as last year, just didn't hole anything at all until 14. I thought he looked excellent, he certainly wasn't scrambling around.

It was a great evening of golf, much better than the last couple of years. I still think Linekar is a terrible choice to front the show, his lack of knowledge shows through with almost every sentence. At least Jonny fucking Miller knows exactly what he's talking about and offers some level of insight. Last years final round was completely spoiled for me by the Linekar coverage. He's a rubbish interviewer.

I actually prefer Linekar. He comes across as an amateur golfer and not an expect making the whole thing more approachable in his presenting stlye.

I love how we've got a Golf thread which had some Masters talk in it but has been ignored all day, and now we have this for the sake of the playoff.

Alt-F'd for a golf thread but nothing recent! This deserves it, just a shame Tiger couldn't come back into it :(

Cheers Soong.

I've managed to avoid this snorefest and now can just watch the exciting bit. Like at the end of cricket, or the crashes in F1 :(
