Super Mario Galaxy on the way for Wii

It was so, so much busier than I thought it would be. I tried as often as possible to get in front of the camera. ;)

I thought the weird Zelda display was...weird. And it's pretty annoying that the whole queue was basically caused by people waiting for a signature.

Yes, we took the option to not have the signature (why ruin the box, and he did look a bit creepy). That meant once we were in the store it was straight up to the till with no queue. Result, but I'm sure we had some evil stares for not getting the thing signed. Still, it meant we still had time for a couple of pints, and now I'm home and just about to fire it up. And to celebrate in true style, I've opened a bottle of champagne and I'm cooking the Sunday roast I didn't get round to (and I'm in a house by myself). Happy times.

The original Super Mario Bros. can be just as fast as Sonic. It's all about how you play it. I find it more fun to play being a jammy bastard than being slow and hitting all the boxes and killing all the enemies.

The 2D Mario games have the perfect control system, once you get good enough you have an almost zen like connection with the fat little bugger. That is something I feel has always been missing from the 3D games.

Played through the first Bee star and I'm loving it.

I am a big fan of 2D mario but never really got on with 3D Mario due to by subpar platforming skills which get much much worse in 3D (Conkers Bad Fur Day / Tomb Raider - can't get off the first few screens without having a fit and turning it off).

This though is brilliant - bits of it remind me of those games you could get as a kid - Screwball Scramble and the Donkey Kong one. I spent ages and ages just walking around the outside of the up/down planet thing that was encased in clear plastic just anticipating running around it.

I'm sure it'll get to a point like most 2D Marios where my crapness will stop me getting further but I don't care as that hopefully won't come to near the end.

Loads of little touches already - it is brilliant.

It is a little bit too easy, no? It'll be this if anything that costs it its Edge 10. I suppose this will all be forgotten when I'm cursing at the later stages, though.

I really don't think it's too easy. It's just about perfect - pretty simple to get enough stars to see the ending (with some tricky bits along the way), with some absolute bastard stages very late on for the completists.

One level is already becoming legendary for its hardness.

I'm only 4 stars in and I must of died about 30 times now ;)

I commented on this game earlier in the thread after a one hour session and wasn't too happy with it. I found it too much to take in. Tonight I had a 3 hour session all alone, headphones on blasting out the soundtrack and even though I was replaying the game from start again I really enjoyed every second of it. It just took me a while to get my head around it all,I'm just not use to playing games that involve new experiences. Not felt like this about a game since SOTC.

Balls. I just can't leave the beehive galaxy unfinished. Two more stars before bed ;)

Five stars later and I've finally called it a day!

One slight annoyance was to find most of my lives had disappeared when i returned to the game. I thought they were pretty easy to get so it seems they only last one session of play.

Anyway, after the bee galaxy, the game turns into amazingness! :)

Just came across a truly marvelous piece of Super Mario 64 fan service. I both shed a tear and had a huge grin on my face all the time while playing through the part. And just when I expected it to be just some kind of a rip-off, everything turned upside down (in SMG terms, so literally) and it turned out to be one of the best moments in video gaming history. Utter brilliance.

I'm starting to wonder when this game will actually show something that's even a little bad. When I just started, I didn't expect that much, but within a few minutes I found myself playing with a constant smile on my face. Everything just makes sense, and if there's something you don't like at first (in my case, the gravity-effects on tiny planets, which affects both the controls and the camera), it won't be for long anyway.

Going back to the game now, I just restored power to the third observatory ;) Though on second thought, I might go back and get some more stars, then some sleep and discover the new part tomorrow. Perhaps.

Remind me. In spoiler text, of course. There's so many magical moments, I can't remember them all.

Just got my first star on the bee level and thought I'd take a quick break to read impressions on here. Seem like everyone is feeling the same way. Pretty bloody special indeed isnt it.

Am I the only one who initially kept cricking his neck when running around the edges of planets. Stopped doing it now but on my first few run arounds It was like Wipeout on the PS1 all over again ;)

I'm away to play some more. 10 stars and then bed for me tonight

Worst game ever...

Sorry best game ever...

something like that.

The only thing missing in this game is the FLUDD device ... so we could kick it hard into deeep space so it never ever comes back and sullies the name of the greatest VG franchise.

Oh man. This is killing me. I have the thing, but won't be able to play it til monday. I won't bore you with the details, suffice to say, FUCK YOU ALL. I picked it up in Game at the special launch thing too. No goodie bags left, but I did persuade them to give me a poor quality T Shirt. Result!

Witness the greatest Mario video ever*, which shows just how fast it can be played:

*except D Heaths Super Bastard Hard Mario World ones, and the 11 string bass one.

Possible vague spoilers (though the thread is full of them now).

10 stars and 6 galaxies in and this is by far the best game I've played for several years; the controls and the camera are perfect so far and there's not a bad galaxy amongst them. It's a real shame that Sweet Sweet galaxy's just the one star - that had me laughing like a loon at the pure jumping craziness of it. There are echoes of the Voids in here, for sure.

Apart from some great level design, some of the little touches - and there are so many of them - are just thrillingly lovely. Even the reactions of the three different characters round the map when you shoot star bits at them made me smile.

So far it's like a cross between SMW3, SM64 and Banjo Kazooie, but with the atmosphere turned up to 11. I'm not sure whether the compactness of the levels I've played so far is going to be to the game's detriment or not - up till now, it doesn't have exploratory nature of 64 (thought it's early days). It's hard to care too much when the levels play so satisfyingly, though. And the actual platforming feels much, much better than in Sunshine, as well as the more abstract levels being a great liberation.

A really beautiful game. No FPS sections so far though. Edge 9.

10 Years ago I was very bored of games, I played SM64 on my friend's machine I fell in love with my pasttime again. The last few years I've been getting really fed up with home console stuff (The DS being the only thing getting regular play). Then the last month and a half happened, Halo 3, PGR4, Orange Box, Phantom Hourglass, COD 4 came along to make this the best 6 weeks in gaming history.

Now to top it off, the greatest game I've played in the last 10 years has arrived (could be the greatest ever, but that's going to take some more time to judge). I've been sitting for the last 5 hours with the biggest grin on my face, humming the tunes, shouting at the screen when I've did something wrong, and generally wallowing in the sheer perfectness of it all

This truly is a golden age of gaming, and it's great that Nintendo are back on form. Just so annoyed that I've no annual leave left ;)

Sure, it concerns the

levels before and boss fights themselves against Bowser in Super Mario 64, especially the second one (since this section in SMG contains lava and stuff as well).

And if you want to read about the 'fan service section' in SMG as well:

first, you get a (relatively short) run through the castle, with both well-known spitfires and Thomps and new Galaxy-like items. Meanwhile, a remixed version of the 'Pre-Bowser Stages' from SM64 plays, which sets the mood in a very nice way. You'll come across Bowser at the end on a circular platform, with a fiery bomb showing. Just when I thought I had to swing him against it AGAIN, gravity changed and both Bowser and Mario end up on a small planet with lava-covering platforms. The most BEAUTIFUL music starts to play, which is essentially an orchestrated version of the one in SM64, along with a chore. As the battle progresses, the music gets more intense and you actually have to punch Bowser hard, which combined is somewhat the most satisfying moment in video gaming history.
