Super Mario Galaxy on the way for Wii

(contains a very vague 'spoiler' of sorts about the amount of stars available and how they come about).

I'm at around 40 stars so far but am getting

about 4-5 stars per 'major' galaxy rather than the 3 listed at the start of each one. I'm in no rush to complete the story, I just want to collect as much as I possibly can. I love the photos and the comets.

Here's a weird graphical issue I noticed - in one galaxy which is partially set inside a house, there's a weird box in the top left corner of the screen at all times. It's barely noticeable as all it does is make that area very slightly darker, but it's definitely there and only on that galaxy.

Has anyone else noticed it?

It's the FLAW I predict an Edge 7

shoddy?

surely you just mean 'lower res'.

You can describe the graphics as many things - but they are not poor. They're excellent, just a lower res than you're probably used to. It's like Metroid. The graphics are fantastic - just lower res.

I must admit, sometimes going from the 360 to the Wii - it takes a bit for my eyes to adjust. From super sharp to blurry.

I really hope Nintendo bring out a 720 Wii at some point that does some upscaling or something.

Just ahd a text off the missus, she's picked it up in Tesco for £29. We got a £10 voucher off the nice folks there yesterday so the cost in cash is a mere £19! Go us!

I am, however, sat 30 miles away and time seems to have stood still since said text.

I feel like I used to on Christmas eve 25 years ago!

Nah, they are poor. When you are in the hub level take a look around. Everything has horrible jaggy lines and what not. There are some nice effects (the water looks cool) but the overal look is very dated. In my opinion of course.

Compared to all the PR shots that have been put out the actual game looks pretty ropey in comparison. Pehaps i've just expected a bit too much.

Something like Team Fortress 2 shows just how good cartoon'y graphics can look.

But then, I supose the graphics have never really been what Mario is about. It's just a "minor" irritation. It's a bit like going from VHS to DVD. Once you've watched a film on DVD VHS just looks poor, no matter how good the film.

Hold your horses, Scott.

see - that's the thing though. Why not? Zelda's been pretty much consistently at the top of the pile for years. Someday - somethings going to over take it?

Of course, these things are subjective.

or maybe it's Manhunt 2?

but a jaggy is a result of a low res....

anyway, each to their own.

Played a fair bit more and quite enjoyed it. It's getting better for me, it's just a bit too easy. The shoddy graphics are still irritating me though.

I think the graphics are amazing. So detailed and full of life.

At no point have I thought it looked shoddy

I don't know how anyone could see them as shoddy?

I am getting this for Christmas. It's going to be tough avoiding too many spoilers. But I can't think of another game that I'd rather be playing next to the Xmas tree on Christmas morning.

It's going to be like Christmas 1991 again, when I got a Megadrive with Sonic.

Your kidding!?! i just bought it from the nottingham gamestation...and it was £39.99. BAS**RDS!

**EDIT** Hang on, im not sure now.....i knew i shouldnt have got my girlfriend go buy it for me. I wont know till she brings it round mine later. She text me to say it cost £39.99...but shes prolly being dippy.

Hehe burned mate!

Gamestation in Stockton put Call Of Duty 4 (standard edition) up for £49.99 on its release, despite HMV offering it for £37.97. I told the guy there and he just gave me a dirty look :P By 1pm they had magically reduced it to £39.99.

Wow I would be pissed if I got it for a tenner more only to see it drop 3 hours later.

Same here. Apart from a little shadow glitch I described earlier I so far haven't seen anything that didn't look lovely, vibrant and alive.

Scott - please play the game before claiming this as the best game ever  You really are hopeless.

It's a bit good isn't it?

Did my queuing at Game on Oxford street yesterday and got my Mario Galaxy tat of A4 notepad and keyring thing but it was all about getting the actual game.

Done all of the terrace apart from the boss galaxy and loving it like cooked food. The Queen Bee's fur looks ridiculously nice - graphics are lush I'd say, can't agree with the 'shoddy' vote, looks damn swish on the 40" screen through component. Obviously it's a bit old school / lower res than 360 etc but it's the best it could be, I can't imagine the cube producing graphics like this...

at no point have I said that it's the best game ever made...

I'm asking other people if they think that.

I'M JUST HAVING A BIT OF FUN.

Ah. In that case: so far I don't think it's the best game ever. It's a bundle of joy, a triumph of creativity and a pleasure to play. For me it lacks emotional impact, an epic feel, graphic whoring oompf, sonic booms and general shock and awe. But that's just the things I expect in my personal favourites, Mario 64 was never a top 10 game for me either (although I always agreed with the 10/10 due to it being revolutionary at the time). However, if you look at the platform genre and Mario games in general, this one is definitely on top.
