some stars are on tiiiny planets, off the top of my bonce,

blow a few things up

(get a star)

dive into water and get a shell

(get a star)

stand on 15 switches very very close to each other

(get a star) I'm not saying it's not fun. It IS, it's a shitload of fun, just hope the stars get more involved and harder to get later on.

Some of the levels are very short and quite easy compared to SM64, so raking in stars goes pretty quickly. I've also seen a couple of these 'one-minute' stars and it doesn't feel like the kind of achievement of getting one after plodding through a torturous platforming section with a nasty piece of bossfight afterwards (although these are available as well so it's a nice mix).

I did one that took about thirty seconds. First underwater level spoiler:

Talk to penguin, dive into water, grab golden shell, being back to penguin. Star.

That's the only bad one I've done so far, no coincidence that it's on a swimming level. Still, at least the reverted to the normal controls for them.

I've had a few "Star's at the top of that windey platformy tower" wow moments. I want more of those. I would say half of the stars have been - On A Plate - stars. I'm thinking maybe the first 30-40 or so stars are training level type stars. Although i've just got to

the ghost house

, so it should pick up here.

I think the problem for me is, when it's good, it's amazing. I just want more amazing.

There are loads of "one minute" stars in Mario 64 too, though. And a few "Hello Mario, have a star!" stars, where all you have to do is press a button.

I've had absolutely epic journeys for stars and that's in the first few galaxies, I dunno if that just makes me shit but I haven't had a problem at all with the time it takes to get stars. I find the mix of short levels to big ones just super! Fucking hell, I love this game.

My mate has just come in with Assassins Creed for the PS3 so has muscled me away from the TV. Does he not understand?!

I’m going away to the Lake District this weekend with the girlfriend and I’m a bit low on funds as I’m buying Rockband next week, so I thought I’d be missing out on this...

So imagine my surprise when she just text me saying she packed my Wii for the weekend, and she’s also purchased ‘Mario’ for me too.

I MAY WELL PROPOSE ONCE I SEE HER AFTER WORK.

That's brilliant. Marry her immediately.

It's like a ton of void levels and mini versions the worlds from M64. This is nicely filling a little hole till mass effect gets glued in my 360. I don't think it's an Edge 10 but a solid 8 or 9. It's almost like what New Super Mario is to Super Mario Bros 1, lots of little levels and you never seem to do the same thing or have the same obstacle twice.

The "Edge 10" doesn't really mean any more than a "Generic Computer Mag 10" though, does it? Even Halo 3 managed to get one (to clarify - I thought Halo 3 was excellent, I enjoyed it from start to finish, but "revolutionary" it most certainly isn't, and that's the criteria Edge apparently ask for when it comes to 10s), though given the target audience one could argue that isn't surprising. But if you're going by what Edge used to claim represented a 10, I don't think it's far away. 9 or 10 - I'd go 10, because I believe it certainly does represent revolution for the platform genre.

And believe you me, Galaxy makes you work for some of the later stars. I actually like the fact that there's a mix in terms of the length of the stages. Keeps things fresh. If all levels were the same length, it'd seem like too much of a trudge in places.

... but a solid 8 or 9.

I find this harder to understand than someone not liking the game.

To me, whether you like it or not, this game is something special. The idea that it's just a 'solid' decent game is bizarre.

Halo 3 has a similar aspect in that you can just feel how much effort has gone into it. This is (IMO) regardless of whether the game is to your taste or not.

I got 54 stars in ONE session. 9 1/2 hours of constant play.

Feel a bit ill. with little sleep.

Fucking Amazing. won't judge untill totally complete but so far this is BY FAR the best game this year, and easily the best of the 3D Marios. Was also pleasantly surprised that its not a total push over as expected. It has quite a well pitched difficulty.

I'm pretty sure that this mario game has LESS of the filler stars and much more of the longer, huge platform scaling ones. This seems like the meatest Mario yet! I don't know what some of you are on about.

Sunshine is worst for the "Here's a Star for you!" stars. Galaxy has NO collect 'em up stars like red/blue coin challenges.

It feel condensed to me....SO much content..most games would take a tiny percentage of the ideas at show here and stretch them right out of hours and hours.

As the thread title says, oh yes, the King is VERY much back. One of the best games I've EVER played.

Are you out of your mind? Because they've given two (deserved) 10's in two months you're saying they are worthless??

Edge 10's are not candy bars mate, they've given out, what? 7 or 8 in 15 years???????

An Edge 10 IS special, regardless of what you think.

Yeah, I can understand people not absolutely adoring the game, but can anyone really say it's not special?

I'm on about 30 stars now. Still having a massive load of fun... the only "bad" level was the water one, which was pretty horrible because it's a swimming level, innit.

I got used to the swimming after a while. I think it's done better here than in the other 3D Marios. Especially once you get the thing-that-helps-you-swim-better.

EDIT: I do wonder if they missed a trick there, though. The motion controls on the (early level spoiler)

manta ray riding

level are brilliant, and could have worked incredibly well used underwater. A bit like Endless Ocean, really.

Edge's scoring system is, generally, no more or less reliable than the majority. They get some things right, they fuck others up. My suspicion is that 10s are sometimes withheld to make it 'appear' more special, whether the author of the review likes it or not. My argument with the Halo 3 score is that the game doesn't meet the alleged criteria Edge have used for years for a 10/10 game.

Edge's last 2 10s are completely justified... and I think we're going to see a 3rd.

It's just confirmation that we're truly in a gaming golden age...

3 cheers for competition and format wars!

Special? Needs?

Completed it earlier today (not 120 stars, just defeated bowser) and it was awesome. Even the ending sequence was great.

For people worrying about easy stars and the like it seems to me that the latter stars in each planet are more challenging. You can easily complete the game getting the first one or two stars on each galaxy but to get ALL of them the challenges do become greater.

Who the hell said this was easy?

I died about 25 times on Rocky Road!

I've also died a lot just from bumping into things.

Anyway, I'm only 8 stars in and it's just wondrous. I've hardly seen any videos, so it all feels really fresh and...zingy. I can't think of the right words to describe it, but the game just seems to have a lot of vim and vigour. It's all "Wheeeee!" and "Whoosh!" and "Sparkle!". :)
